Plus.... I always keep a Clone of my OS Drive

Once I have everything how I need it, I clone it and store it.

All my files are saved on my session drives.

So if an update takes her out, no prob, slap the cloned drive back in (And clone again) and nothing has changed.

Tadda.....

If it runs the GM I seriously doubt they will go back and remove something like an Ethernet driver. On the off chance they do, you can always reinject the ktext from the GM release. They never removed the 64 bit ktext for the 7300, there simply never was one.

Also, I'll have to go back and look closer at the supported 2008 machine but I don't think the hardware they used was much different, therefore I doubt they will pull support for anything.

Yes, it's a tad more involved than simply downloading ML from the app store and walking away, but it's a lot less hassle for me then wasting money on 3 year old "new" hardware with a true update do next year or trying to get something which isn't that much faster (like an 08) off eBay, which will be useless to me next year once the 2013 machines drop.

There is a whole community dedicated to running OS X on non apple hardware. I doubt I'll have much trouble on official Apple hardware.

dude, I know it works. I'm just saying, don't advertise it as "simple" because next thing you know it, you'll have 50 people asking you why their screen is black and what a "kext" is.

Indeed. Also being a MacPro the graphics card is replaceable anyway.
Im also hoping the Chameleon method may allow booting off a PC SATA 3 card. I've seen one out there that you can screw a 2.5" drive to which only boots EFI64 and PC.

I'd love to post my completed disk image, but Apple wouldn't like that! I may try and automate the process a little, see if that makes it more accessible to the layman.

The one you're talking about is the Velocity Solo

I have one installed with a 256

(1,1 - x5355's, 5770 Coming, 16GB Ram, SSD for OS, SSD for Working Files in Velocity Solo PCIe)

I PM'd ya some Q's

I'm hoping the Velocity will work.... I'm just confused why it shows as a 'Removable Drive'

Hmmmmmm

My setup is the 1,1 flashed to a 2,1 with the x5355 CPUs, a Flashed Radeon 4870, 10 gig of Ram. I installed Chameleon on a 1 gig MBR partiton on a HD I have installed in the 2nd optical bay. It's an IDE drive. I can boot off of it using the bless command but after a flashing cursor it doesn't see anything to boot from. I didn't prepare a ML disk or installer yet, just was trying to boot my existing Lion in 64 bit kernel. I'll play around with your step by step Sunday. If you need anything tested I'm willing.

If you can follow it and let me know if I've missed anything or I've not been clear. I'll try and run through from scratch when the 8gig SSD I ordered arrives.
I don't think I blessed the drive when I did it but I may have before and it just remained blessed wen I installed chameleon again. Originally that 320 was running 10.8 for testing where it now has the installer stuff but the boot partition is unchanged. Maybe I can image the boot partition for you.

Im close. I can boot the ML installer with chameleon. But it just sits at the gray hatched background/wallpaper and doesn't open any dialog boxes or menus....any ideas?

Yes I am. The only thing I modified in the smbios.plist is I added the serial number of the machine. My board ID is the same as your 1,1. I have the 7300 card driving a 23" cinema display but that stays blank during the process. The primary card is a 4870.

Try this:
Set up your hdd with two partitions. MBR, first one 8GIG and the next one rest of the disk. call the first one BOOT and the second one ML HD.
restore BaseSystem.dmg to BOOT. Copy over the installers from InstallESD, then my modified OSInstall.mpkg. Copy mach_kernel from InstallESD. Install Cameleon to BOOT. Copy my Extras folder and edit SMBIOS with your serial. also the org.chameleon.boot.plist may need to be set to hd(0,1) the changed to hd(0,2) after install.

First.. I'd consider looking at the thread on netkas http://forum.netkas.org/index.php/topic,1123.msg10380.html#msg10380 for a dsdt without the mod mine has to enable HDMI audio out over minidisplayport.

Good Luck

The dsdt isn't necessary right? I know it solves some power management and audio issues, but if I just get rid of it for now to see if that's the problem?

Yup. DSDT solves an issue where audio doesn't work and all drives show as external. So you can do without it and you'll just get orange drive icons and no sound.

That link I posted should be suitable for yours though..

Success! Sort of..lol

Important things to know.....30" display plugged into the inside dvi port of the 4870. 23" cinema display on the 7300. Booting this thing from a IDE drive. Initially tried your suggestions and had the same result. Just the wallpaper. So I then cloned my ML install from the Parallels VM I initially tested it in. Cloned it to the 2nd partition on the IDE Drive. Chameleon let me pick this, but kernel panicked. Restated in safe mode....got just the wallpaper, same as the installer.. So I figured, the 7300 was the issue. However it is a pain to get my Pro out to remove anything. So I took the 23" display and hooked it to the second DVI port of the 4870. Tried the boot partition this time with the installer on it and.....success! Small issue is it needs a guid partition to install to and I didn't have room on any drives at the moment. So I restarted again and this time picked the vm copy on the IDE drive with both monitors connected to the 4870 in safe mode and we were up and running. Since I was in safe mode, only the 23" display was working and the system was being identified as a summer 2001 iMac. No audio and horrible video performance as well. I updated ML with software update and rebooted but it still kernel panics. I'm guessing it has to do with some parallels drivers in there...I tried to get them all but....I guess I missed a few. I'm going to free up some space on another drive and do a clean install from the boot/install partition.

I may be doing this when i install the x5355 processors.

It's worth it. Once the GM build hits, I'll upgrade the existing install on my secondary HD. That will then get cloned to my main SSD. I'll keep a small lion partition and we will be good to go.

Ok, I got a clean install to run on a GUID partitioned drive in my Mac Pro. Install went fine, but I'm still kernel panic on boot.

Ideas? Rip out the 7300 totally? I do have some USB drives, etc plugged in as well. Anything to do with the default partition in smbios.plist?

'Everything' I've been reading so far is pointing to known issues with the 7300's and ML, so I would definitely lose that and see what happens.

Great place to start, as far as I know.

I haven't jumped on this yet, and will be waiting for GM.... as bad as I want to dive in right now, I can't afford the time to do so.....

In the mean time, I'm trying to stay up to date on posts all over the place to be as in tune as I can for when the time comes.

I probably will. A bit of a pain to get in my Mac Pro. I don't have anything hooked to the 7300 but maybe just it being there is giving it fits.

I would.

Not saying it is creating ALL your problems (Though it wouldn't surprise me)

But I'm sure it's responsible for some.... and I'm pretty confident it would throw you KP's just being there

I haven't had the 7300 in my macpro for years but I had an 8800GT in when I ran DP1 and it misbehaved a little. The 5770 was a worthwhile upgrade for sure.

I'm good with the 4870. The 23" I have now as a secondary is on its last legs. Top backlight is starting to flicker, it ghosts and it's color tones are off. The 4870 runs diablo 3 fine on my 30". I'm ordering a new 13" Macbook Air tonight and a refurb TB display. I'll just keep the 30" connected to the pro and when they finally release a new pro, I'll move the TB display to that. I'll pull the 7300 tonight and see what happens.

It was the 7300 causing the KP. Last remaining issue is the machine is being identified as a summer 2001 iMac and not detecting the serial number. It's stating (SOMESRLNMBR) as the SN. So, does the dsdt.ami, symbiosis.plist go in to an extra folder on boot or do the files just go in the root of the drive? I have no sound and it's not doing anything with my 30" ACD.

In the extras folder. That will sort your ID problems. If you're using your cloned vm image, you may need to edit the supported platforms plist or make your mac pro appear as a 4,1 with associated board ID.

That did it!

I am running a clean install. I had an (S) on the end of the extra folder. Now I'm just going to resize the boot partition down to a gig and hide it via fstab. Right now it's blessed as the boot partition, so until GM hits I'll probably do EFI booting by default until I can get everything moved over.....I haven't moved any apps or data to ML at this point but it's running and it's smooth...
