Mac Pro 1,1s are officially screwed

Does everyone realize that Mountain Lion will not support our machines? With my upgraded processors and SSD, I absolutely love my machine as geek benches at 9500. But now I feel its absolute junk since I can't update it even though it was advertised as a 64 bit machine and that is what Mountain Lion requires. Very P.O. right now.
 
A 6 year old computer that was billed as a 64-bit computer. Now we are being told it is not enough 64-bitish. Nice.
 
The G5 PowerMac is 64 bit as well and it won't be supported by Mountain Lion.
 
This was one of the reasons I upgraded my 1,1 to a 3,1. You can get a 3,1 for a reasonable price these days, and in time they will only become cheaper.

The G5 couldn't run intel only software either.
 
Your Mac Pro performance will be just as good when ML releases, as it is today.

The Mac Pro 1,1 has actually been supported much longer then any other Mac. Intel Macbooks from 2006 got cut off in Lion.

It's not as much 64-bit EFI issue, it is simply that Apple does not want to continue support. For the Macbooks they simply added a plist to prevent from installing. So even if the 1,1 did have 64-bit EFI, I would bet that Apple had made a similar thing, plist or whatever, to prevent from installing.

Where did you find the list of Mountain Lion supported systems? If Apple hasn't said anything, one must not presume the lack of support for anything that was supported by Lion.
 
ML hasn't come out yet and there are people already desperate.

Snow Leopard and Lion are great OSs. Nothing forces you to upgrade them when a new version comes out in 5 months on your 6 years old machine.

Just sayin'.
 
While nothing factual has been stated and everything thus far is conjecture, I am going to go out on a limb and guess that it won't just be a 64bit only kernel that ML will support but also only EFI 64 which will exclude the MP 1,1 and 2,1. Lion didn't impose any EFI restrictions and sure, people have been successful in installing Lion on unsupported systems by mucking about with the Plist files. I think most people running Lion today on MP 1,1 or 2,1 systems will be miffed about the exclusion from ML, I don't see ML being that different from Lion, so they should be happy they are still able to use their systems after six years. I personally don't see ML being as big an upgrade from Lion that Lion was to SL, but that's my opinion.

If it were that simple one wonders why they haven't done this in the past five or six years? I expect they want to drop this old MP and no longer have them as 'supported' systems, likely due to the possibility that they want to go with both 64bit kernel and 64bit EFI.
 
guess i'll keep lion and wait til someone ports the new apps over, should make it about equal

Regardless, as others have pointed out, the 1,1 is 6 years old... All the other Intel machines from that time period were already dropped with Lion.

I wouldn't count on that. The new apps are integrated very tightly into the 10.8 system and libraries.
 
The kicker is...they are just as capable as a newer machine, in some cases even more capable than some they are currently selling.

Yep, some people can't afford a new Mac just because Apple decides to put a soft lock on it. If 10.8 really won't run on a 1,1 the only way to go to stay current would be to go with Windoze 8 :(

I want 10.8 on my 1,1 :( It does everything I need and more but I always love having the latest OS

Honestly, I still use a 2006 Mac Pro myself, but I've known for a while that this machine is getting pretty old in "computer years". I mean, we've got a lot of circa 2005-06 Windows PCs still in use at my workplace too, but nobody's very pleased with their performance anymore. They're "usable" with XP but not really worth a Windows 7 upgrade in many cases, due to lack of RAM or sufficiently capable video card.

You're right that they're "just as capable" as SOME of the newer machines, so in that regard, they've held up better than most of their Windows-based counter-parts. Still, 6 years is plenty of time to get one's money's worth out of the computer and prepare to move on to something new.

My '06 Mac Pro is still on Snow Leopard though.... never even saw a point to putting Lion on it, since I use a lot of music-related software on it that doesn't necessarily have validated/current device drivers for the latest version of Lion. So it'd be at LEAST another year before I actually cared that it wasn't "Mountain Lion capable", at this rate.
