Sorry if I'm missing something here but I'm very confused I have ML running through MLPF and that is my daily disk so I have took that out in case I screw something up and put in my old Lion disk. Downloaded boot.efi and browsed to the folder on the disk and tried to overwrite it but its locked? So thats as far as I've got and people are talking about modified Mavericks installers I thought I was modifying the computer, I'm extremely confused if someone could help me out that would be wonderful.

Cheers

I got SFOTT to work and was able to install Mavericks 10.9 on a MacPro 1,1 (2x3.0GHz dual core, wifi, bluetooth, 13GB RAM, 2TB 7200RPM disk, NVidia 8800GT 512MB).

I did the software update to 10.9.1

The MacPro is really slow and sluggish compared to when running 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). The graphics rendering is slow and sluggish.

What sorts of things do people recommend turning off or tweaking to get better performance?
I was thinking about replacing the 8800GT with an NVidia GTX-460 card.
Is Mountain Lion (10.8.x) snappier and more responsive?

I would love to find/buy a nice newer MacPro (4,1 or later) 8 or 12 core machine, but don't think I can afford it.
I was thinking about upgrading the CPUs to 2x Intel Xeon x5365 quad core for 8 real cores and more cache (compared to the 4 real cores right now).
Anybody got a screaming deal on matched x5365 (or faster that will work with this machine??)?
I was also thinking about putting in an SSD for the system disk.

I have a MacPro 2,1 (2xquad Xeon x5365 3.0GHz, 32GB RAM, 2TB, ...)
running 10.6.8 that I was thinking about upgrading to Mavericks, but I want to be sure it will be fast and responsive. Otherwise, I was thinking about going to Mountain Lion (10.8.x).

Thanks!

I'm using my mac pro 1.1 with 10.9 with a 8500gt, all is working but it's not smooth! It seems that the video card is very slow (qe/cl works but with few fps), so I'm going to buy a 5770.

Another issue is that OS X doesn't go into sleep mode, if I select stop on the apple menu or push the power button it only go in black screen, but the fans continue moving, the led doesn't blink!
the strange fact is that after going into this "fake" sleep and then resuming pressing the mouse on the console appears nothing. On my other partition with Lion sleep works, and I have the same preferences copied with migration assistant.

Or, should I keep my eyes peeled and try to buy an 8 or 12 core 5,1?

Will 10.8.x be faster on this old hardware than 10.9.x?
I have an NVidia GTX-660 that I was going to stick in that machine once I get 10.9.x or 10.8.x installed. I know that it is kind of wasteful sticking a PCIe 3.0 card in those machines given that the MacPro 1,1 and 2,1 are only PCIe 1.0.

Thanks!

I successfully installed on MacMini2,1 and MacPro1,1.
this is great I made a small app to automate all this.

Tiamo's did a super great Job

Just input your board_id, your model and the USB key to use and click.
fully automated or step by step. you can even then patch "again" the key to add other computer Boards.
works great. was a personnal challenge to code and as it works fine I though I'd post it in here.

Tiamo thanks again.

If any of you are interested : go there http://oemden.com/?p=556
I've called this little app (shell script bundled in an Applescript App)
SFOTT aka Sixty Four On Thirty Two.

Enjoy as I did.

This is an ongoing Work, but I've tested again and again and it works OK.

Can't load installation

Hi!
I can't load installation from my USB.
Process stop with "Still waiting for root device" in progress loading Firewire...

Mac Pro 1.1 firmware -> MacPro 2.1
2x2.66 GHz
ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512 MB
7Gb Ram

Sorry for my ukrainian English :)

If anyone interested, I just made 10.8.5 working with tiamo's file.
I have a upgraded mac pro 1.1-2.1 with hd 5770.
First I made a clone of my 10.8.3 MLPF installation (used it with 7300gt), installed tiamo modified 10.8.3 on top, then did 10.8.5 combo update and replaced boot.efi again. It sounds adventurous but so far it works fine! Icloud, facetime, sleep mode (fans including graphics card off) open cl.
Later I want to clone back to my SSD connected on extra SATA port.

I guess it's your GPU that makes things really slow and sluggish.
Because I've got the same MP, and with 10.9 is slightly faster.
I have Apple branded Radeon HD 5770, and below we have benchmarks; Lion vs Mavericks on my machine.

LION

Integer Score : 1358 - 4971
Floating Point Score : 1253 - 4844
Memory Score : 699 - 1176

Geekbench Score : 1184 - 4161

MAVERICKS

Integer Score : 1359 - 5072
Floating Point Score : 1274 - 4896
Memory Score : 695 - 1170

Geekbench Score : 1192 - 4221

I followed the original instructions here with an 80GB Firewire HD, all worked beautifully!

I have a stock Mac Pro 1,1 with 7300GT card. I didn't expect it to work at all, as I thought this card was too weak or underpowered for Mavericks - but it does work. However, I experience lots of flashing during use (Safari bar, scroll bars, Top hits website page, videos playing way too slow) - the speed is terrible.

Is there a fix for my stock card? ..or must I upgrade the card for Mavericks? If I must upgrade, can anyone point me to a list of cards supported?

thank you

7300GT here as well with the same artifacts. Planning to run this machine as a server, so I may or may not replace it. Might be a good excuse to upgrade my 12-core MP which has a 5770 in it... :D

Other than that smooth sailing!

[EDIT]

Wrong video card, I actually have an ATI X1900. Reports as having 5MB RAM. From some accounts I've read, I shouldn't even be running with that GPU! Also I decided to flash to a 2,1 and all is still working fine.

BTW if I open About This Mac and click More Info, then System Report, I get bounced out to the Login Screen.

When using multiple video card remember to plug in the faster card into slot 1, because the other slots are not x16 so are slower.

Now I have bought an HD5770 (PC) it's working 100% but SystemProfiler recognise the card like an 5000, how can I fix that?

Please help

Thank u for this method.

Mac Pro 1.1
2x2.66 GHz
ATI Radeon 5770
16Gb Ram

make a usb with createinstallmedia method, but i am stuck.
Can not replace InstallableMachines.plist and OSInstall.mpkg
because volume is locked.

Other files replaced easily, exept these two.
I am not very familiar with terminal but as admin i can not unlock usb

Any help, please?

Sleep problems

Is anyone having sleep problems with 10.9.x on the Mac Pro 1,1?

My machine will not automatically (via Energy Saver pref) or manually sleep (via Apple menu). The display turns blank but the machine never sleeps.

I've tried Safe Boot, a new user account, PRAM and SMC resets, clean install and turning off the 'Wake for Ethernet network access' check box.

I get the following reported in Console:

Code:
23/12/2013 15:45:55.000 kernel[0]: System sleep prevented by PXS4
23/12/2013 15:47:30.561 WindowServer[322]: handle_will_sleep_auth_and_shield_windows: Deferring.
23/12/2013 15:52:12.000 kernel[0]: ACPI: sleep states S3 S4 S5

Any thoughts/suggestions? Its annoying as the machine is in a bedroom. It will still sleep correctly if I boot back to my Lion install.

I had the same, idntical, problem but the Console didn't report anything.
Mac not going into deep sleep, only black screen and fans working but with lion in the other disk no issue.

I fixed that using only one graphics card, the problem became when I was using the 8500gt with the 7300 installed.
Now, with only 8500gt or only 5770, sleep works.
Another possible cause could be the bluetooth keyboard, but in this case you should try to disable bluetooth.

You saviour! Have been tearing my hair out, but it removed the 7300GT leaving my 5770 in slot 1. Sleep now works!

Thanks.

Success! Just installed 10.9.1 onto my MacPro 1,1, GPU is a NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB.

I used the SFOTT tool to prepare my drive but instead of using USB keys I just made a Mavricks Partition & a Mavricks Install Partiton on my local HD and used that to install Mavricks. In the process of reinstalling some prepress software now but all seems great so far!

I had a working Mavericks installation on my 1,1, great work Tiamo. Then is put my Lion disk back in with the intention of copying some stuff across.

Whilst in Lion I set the startup disk to the new Mavericks installation. Since then the Mavericks installation won't boot even when it's the only disk in the machine.

I assumed the boot.efi had been overwritten so replaced them again with Tiamo's boot.efi but it still won't boot, any ideas? Does setting the startup disk make other changes?

tiamo, you are the man!! incredible work, well done! I did a fresh install of mavericks using my MacPro3,1. pulled the drive and just replaced both boot.efi files, then I put the disk back into the MacPro2,1. boom, done, boots, everything works. just WOW!

For me this was the best idee to install OSX 10.9 on my MacPro 2,1/NVIDIA GT-120. I insalled 10.9.x on my MacBookPro4,1, replaced the both boot.efi and it work fine!!

tiamo your the BEST. Thank you very mutch from Germany.

Pretty sure you have to use this method to create your USB drive. I built a 16GB USB drive partitioned in half, one half having a standard Mavericks installer and the other having an installer made using the above method called Legacy Mac Mavericks Installer. I have to go back in and modify that one to remove the board ID check.

I did, but at comments alex says...This is the best way to create a bootable USB installation drive, because it gets rid of Disk Utility and the resulting Installer will accurately produce a recovery partition when used.

Anyway i did try the 32το 64 script from above and everything works great. Never mind the lack of recovery partition

Thanks anyway

With regard to running the SFOTT script..

Maybe this was mentioned somewhere or was otherwise obvious- but what OS are you guys upgrading from when you run this installer? Can you run this from Snow Leopard or do you have to be running Lion?

I'm considering starting over with an SSD as a boot drive and was wondering if I could just install SL on the boot drive, put the Mavericks installer in the Applications folder (per the instructions on his page) and run this script.

Thanks.
