Sleep

Is there a prevailing theory as to which early Mac Pros running Tiamo's boot.efi fail to sleep properly? In mine, for instance, pressing the power button just briefly when Mavericks is running accomplishes nothing at all. SMC and PRAM have been reset to no avail. If I choose to let the computer sleep on its own after, say, fifteen minutes of inactivity, it may turn the monitor off, but it doesn't actually go to sleep (the power button light is on all the time, with no fluctuation). Even worse, if I try to "wake it up", chances are the screen won't come back to life and I have to force the computer to shut down. The only differences I can think of between my Mac Pro 1,1->2,1 and the original model are:

1. Although it has the original internal Bluetooth card, it doesn't have a real AirPort expansion card, but a PCI card recognised as a regular AirPort card.
2. I installed Mavericks Server, but I don't usually run it.
3. Most importantly, my graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB provided by Apple and my monitor is an Apple 27-inch LED Cinema Display.

Is there a solution to sleep/wakeup issues that is any better than not letting the computer sleep? Thanks.

Open the Terminal.app and run
Code:
pmset -g assertions
.
This will show processes preventing the system from sleep.

Did you patch your firmware to 2,1 only or the SMC also?

I had a strange shutdown unwillingness with tiamo's, firmware 2,1 and SMC 1.7. My Pro refused to switch off immediately after startup, it needed to run a couple of minutes before shutdown was successful, otherwise it restarted.

Patching to SMC 1.15 solved it for me.

I don't quite know how to interpret that, or if there's something included that is abnormal. Thank you for your help.

After patching 1,1->2,1, this is what appears in the relevant information for my computer:

Model Name: Mac Pro
Model Identifier: MacPro2,1
Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
Number of Processors: 2
Total Number of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per Processor): 4 MB

It looks like you are sharing an external device. Try to unplug all external devices.

I repeat again, this thread is for Mac Pros running mavericks, not Macbooks, your MacBook is 64 bit capable WITHOUT Tiamo's boot loader - the reasons that it is inadvisable to force install and then run Mountain Lion or Mavericks are that there are no 64 bit graphics drivers, therefore no graphics acceleration (you noted your system appears to run slowly) and there are issues with sleep and sound - as you also noted.

There are better solutions for MacBooks being developed in the MacBook forum by HackerWayne et al, take a look there.

I'm fairly new to Mac's, and extremely new to 'hacking' them like this, so forgive this question if it is a silly one. I've been given an old Mac Mini (Late 2006) with 2GB RAM - http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_mini/specs/mac_mini_cd_1.83-specs.html .

1- Is it possible to get Mavericks on this mac mini?
2- I tried the SFOTT and didn't get it work (think I did some steps wrong though), is this method ok to use on a mac mini?

It looks like your are sharing an external devices. Try to unplug all external devices.

The only external device I'm sharing is my USB-connected printer. Although that wasn't a problem in previous iterations of OS X, it indeed appears that when I stop sharing it, the power button regains its normal Mavericks functionality, except that it turns my screen blank, with high likelihood of needing a hard reset to regain access to the computer.

It would be great if a roundabout for such problems could be found. Whether you can provide further help or not, thank you for detecting this "sharing problem". Very curious indeed.

Hey miasis, I have the same computer, with a Radeon 4870 and also cannot get Bioshock Infinite to run. It seems that there's something wrong with our computers that BI doesn't like…

Has anyone else had success running Bioshock Infinite on their Mac Pro 1,1? Or is there anyone that may know why it wouldn't run when booting into Mavericks using tiamo's boot files on a Mac Pro 1,1?

As power management is a core purpose of the SMC, I'd bring it in line with the firmware.

I wasn't aware of the existence of that SMC upgrade. Thank you very much. I've successfully updated, but it seems Mavericks still considers my sharing of the printer is incompatible with sleep. Right now, I can't verify if un-sharing it and pressing the power button will send the monitor and its control to limbo.

I'd say that the installation of Server is your problem. I found this post on Apple Support a while back.

Just want to say thank to tiamo.

This works GREAT for my MacPro2,1 8-core which was upgraded from MacPro 1,1 4-core.

I used this link to prepare installer USB disk. The app is not user-friendly. But if you follow its "how-to", it is very easy and everything is automatic.
It took me just several minutes to prepare.

Another report of success. Thanks to everyone who helped with this, and thanks to the early adopters who helped me fix my initial issues with creating the USB drive. Fully functional Mavericks install on my 1,1 2.66 Quad.

I've tried with a 5870, a 660, and a 680 installed - no dice.

As a whacky wheeze I copied my Bioshock Infinite installation over to my MacBook Air. It runs on that with no problems, so it doesn't appear to be a generic installation issue.

The latest Tomb Raider runs quite nicely btw :)

Glad you got it done - Some people have no trouble, others however….

:)

Very interesting. Thank you. In this case, however, it does seem that when I un-share my USB printer, I get the sleep capability back, defective though it may be.

Since 10.9.2 mine stopped sleeping with power button, but goes to sleep with :apple:/sleep. It's certainly a feature, not the bug :D

Don't know if this has happened to anyone else, but the Combo Update from 10.9.0 to 10.9.2 replaced the custom boot.efi - had to remove the hard drive, hook it into my '08 and rm -f the boot.efi through Terminal, (locked file, for obvious reasons) and replace them both with the modified ones. Good news is, it booted fine after that.

Does the SMC upgrade make any substantial difference on Mac Pro 1,1 running 5355/65 CPUs? Does it improve temps at all?

I assume that the SMC upgrade can only be performed on a system with EFI video cards? I was going to upgrade my SMC per the instructions but I doubt it will work due to my XFX 6870 vid card with no boot screen? How would I see what I'm typing in the EFI shell?
