I don't know if this is a symptom of this same problem, but here's a potential datapoint:
Ventura 13.7.6
Highpoint 1104f in x8 slot
2x Samsung 990 Pro - 1 boot drive, one Photo archive.
Swiping through a smart folder on the photo drive with a little over 29000 36MP RAW photos, with icon sizes at about 2/3 of the slider value, quicklooking , using the preview panel to check EXIF data etc and after a while finder locks up with a beachball, I get an unsafe disk ejection notification for my photo drive 990 Pro, and after force-quitting Finder, it won't relaunch; it goes back to being quit after one dock bounce.
Checking Disk Utility, the photo drive isn't listed as a device.
Reboot, the system comes up with my usual desktop wallpaper on the login screen, but when I log in, all my desktop wallpaper preferences are gone for every space - they're back to Ventura Dark default. The Photo drive is also nowhere to be seen.
Power cycle with a minute of power physically unplugged, boot up, desktop background is still on the login screen, but on logging in wallpapers are still Ventura default, and Photo drive has returned.
I am tempted to swap my Highpoint card to an x16 slot (I have 2 new 990 Pros to install as well), and move the Afterburner to an x8 slot, or out of the machine completely.
