I have just got hold of a 2010MP, I have seen it working before purchase, but now when connected to my monitors the screen goes black after the boot screen, I am using the dual link DVI port and get this screen on boot, then it just goes black so I cant change the resolution.

I have reset the PRAM. tried booting in safe mode and booted from an install USB stick all with the same result.

The GPU is a Sapphire 7970 as below, I don't think it's a Mac edition but a flashed PC card.

Any ideas?
Thanks all.

I was worried that would be the answer, I don't have a DVI-D adaptor, only DVI-I for the lower port, I'll order one now.

I mean using analog video is obsolete, the card is useable, metal compatible and allows system installations.

Not all ports work, you need to test it, depends on the flashed firmware.

Guess noone tested analog...

I have a ( backup ) Sapphire DUAL-X 7970 which I flashed; all ports work.

You could try a DVI-HDMI adapter too. It all depends on what ports are on your monitor - can you post those ?

Also, is your card a Sapphire Vapor-X ? Power sockets = One 8 pin + one 6 pin ?

( It is always a good idea to tell us as much as possible about your GPU eg: ports, power sockets etc.

It has 2 x 8pin connectors, pic of the label below, just tried an old GT 120 I had but that won't even display the boot logo?

Right getting somewhere now, GT120 not Mojave compatible, found a few flashed cards on eBay and they say upper DVI not working and HDMI not working, guess I'll have to wait until my Displayport adapter turns up and go from there.

Your 7970 is unusual in that it has TWO 8 pin sockets. My Sapphire Dual-X 7970 has ONE 6 pin and ONE 8 pin socket.

I know this is a hassle but can you remove the GPU & take some photos of ..

1. The bottom of the card showing the two power sockets.

2. The position of the BIOS switch; is it set to position 1 or 2 ? ( should be set to position #2)

3. The whole card from an oblique angle showing the face of the card and also the graphic ports.

============================

Q : What is your monitor's make & model ? What ports does it have ?

Q : How are you powering the card ? Which power cables are you using ?

==================================================

Best power cabling solution

From Mac Pro motherboard to GPU

1. TWO x Mini 6pin to ONE x 8 pin to GPU 8 pin socket
( I presume that you already have this cable )

TWO mini 6 pin to ONE 8 pin GPU cable.jpg

2. Remove two SATA drives - connect them to the TWO SATA cables in the DVI Drive cage.

2.1 You will now need a TWO x SATA to ONE x 6 pin cable ( not 8pin for safety )

TWO SATA to ONE 6 pin.jpg

=======================================================

2.3 : You CAN plug a 6 pin cable male socket into the other GPU's 8 pin's female socket
BUT it must be plugged into the RIGHT SIDE of the socket.
The above cable will supply less power than a 2 X SATA to 1 x 8 pin but is safe to use and will not
trigger shutdowns.

2 x SATA to 1 x 6 pin to GPU 8pin socket.png

( a 2 x SATA to 1 x 8 pin cable might draw too much power & trigger a shutdown)

===================================================

I should be able to work out a solution to your problem if I you can confirm all of the above.

It could also be that your card was not flashed correctly. I can help with that too.

=====================================

If eventually everything works out OK you can go one step further and use a EVGs PowerLink to balance out ALL the available power supplied from the above cabling and then to the GPU.
The PowerLink was originally designed for NVIDIa GPUs but can be used with many AMD cards too.
I use the PowerLink ( depending on the situation ) with both my Sapphire Dual-X 7970 3gb & my MSI Armor RX580 8gb.

=======================================================

It would not hurt if you were to go to your Macrumors Member Profile/ SIGNATURE and write a description of how your Mac Pro is set up. Include your current Mac OS version & your bootrom version )

My SIGNATURE is at the bottom of this post.

======================================================

Please send me a PM ( private message) if you have any questions.
Myself and many other here are quite experienced with both EFI lashing & powering AMD GPUS.

Thanks MIKX, finally got round to this, here are loads of pics, should be all you require.

https://imgrpost.com/album/V6pj

I have managed to get the Displayport working by reinstalling Mojave but now the lower DVI port has stopped working, upper DVI and HDMI never worked (this is the same with the switch in position 1 or 2) I really want dual display with boot screen.

Below are some screenshots of details from the card, switch in position 1

and switch in position 2

You do realise that you can upload photos with your Macrumors posts don't you ? Use the "Attach files" button.

Your HIS 7950 with TWO 8 pin sockets is different to the HIS 7950 I had. It may not be "AMD reference " PCB. you should Google re that.

My HIS 7950

Power = 1 X 8pin & 1 x 6pin sockets

HIS IceQ HD 7950 3gb.jpg

Great card for it's day with very, very efficient cooling. Sucks all of it's hot air out of the case - actually assisted in cooling the cMP's PCI area
===============================================

With your HIS 7950 you can use a 2 x SATA to 1 x 6 pin cable and plug it into THE RIGHT SIDE of one of the HIS 8 pin sockets. ( do not use 2 x SAT to 1 x 8 PIN - - it will draw too much power from the motherboard.)

Like this . .

2 x SATA to 1 x 6 pin to GPU 8pin socket.png

You say this is a HIS 7950? the label on the underside says 7970 and SKU and part number search come up with Sapphire 7970?

I can't use SATA as I need 4 drives, this has worked with the current power source I have seen it working, I just want the lower DVI port to work and I have 2 displays.

Sorry, it looked like a 2 x 8 pin HIS. Bad eyesight.

In any case, the powering plan in my last post works for two x 8 pin sockets.

You can put TWO SATA drives ( spare drive screw should be inside the cage ) in the DVI cage - use an external DVI drive. I do.

Anyway, you now have enough information to finish the project by yourself.

I don't get why I need to power from SATA, it has worked with 2 screens and is working with one now, and what is the DVI cage?

I have 2 drives in there, not going external, is there any reason why this would suddenly stop working? it was after re-install of Mojave I'll admit, but the lower DVI won't output even if its the only one connected, Displayport works OK no matter what.

Does the card look correctly flashed to you form my screenshots?

So you have 6 drives installed . .. 2 in the DVD cage and 4 in the SATA / PCI bay.

Why do you thing there are TWO 8 pin power sockets on your GPU ?

BOTH sockets must be supplied power.

The best way to fix your GPU problem is to head over to the Netkas site ( like many of us here did ) and learn from scratch how to correctly flash ( and correctly power ) your card.

Yes I have 2 Blu-ray writers and 4 x 2tb drives in the bays, if you looked at the photos you will see both 8 pin sockets have leads plugged in.

I honestly prefer not having to go to imgur.com. You can post photos here with your posts.

Where is the power for the 2nd. 8 pin socket coming from ?

thats not imgur, and the answer is in the photos.

That should be enough power for anything.

You didn't say how your 2nd. GPU 8 pin socket is being powered.

If your Sapphire GPU is not an Apple supplied GPU and has been privately EFI flashed the only way to determine that it HAS been flashed correctly is to dump the ROM and examine it.

======================================

Anyway, I think you need another Macrumors member to assist you.
To me you seem to be doing things the hard way. No offense intended at all.

No offence taken ;) there are 2 PCI Aux sockets and both are being used to power the GPU.
Would 2 monitors under normal use make a difference? I can understand if both where displaying 4k video or gaming, but surely both should display at startup.

What you do not seem to understand is this. .

For just ONE of your Sapphire's 8 pin sockets this cable is used.

2 x Mini 6 pin to 1 x 8 pin
TWO mini 6 pin to ONE 8 pin GPU cable.jpg

==============================================
For the OTHER 8 pin socket this cable is used.
2 x SATA to 1 x 6pin cable -
The 6 pin Male must be inserted into the RIGHT SIDE of the OTHER GPU 8 pin socket

Like this . ..
6pin male into right side of 8 pin female socket.png

===========================================
Any other cabling setup besides the Pixlas mod is dangerous under load.
