I noticed that my Mac App store version of F1 2016 had an update so I updated the game. I'll have to try the new update with the 10.12.5 update along with the new nvidia drivers to see if any good comes of it when I get home from work. It's pretty disappointing that the game crashes constantly with these cards.

ok let me know if the update works fine or not! Thank you!

I know I am resurrecting an old thread, but I got myself a Mac Pro 5.1 6-Core 3.33 GHz, 24 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 - Mac Edition.

These specs should allow me to run F1 2016, but the game is being blocked blocked.

However... F1 2017 runs fine!
I get a warning that my Mac doesn't meet the requirements (I understand that the installed grfx card is not checked, just the expectation of a stock card..) but I can run F1 2017 at full settings on 1080p!

So no real need for F1 2016 to work on this Mac, but I wonder if the block can be removed anyway...

I never got past the block with the 7950 - ended up getting a GTX680 to play 2016.

2016 does work with an R9 280x (7970).

I finally however upgraded to an RX580 for 2017 and recommend it (just keep an EFI card around for emergencies or firmware updates).

Yes 2016 did - however when F1 2017 came out that was unreliable with the GTX680 so I’m back to AMD again (RX580).

Ah, that means the "block" does check which grfx card is placed... and the GTX 680 is supported and the 7950 is not... that is weird.
Oh well, I am not replacing the 7950. F1 2017 runs fine, so real need for F1 2016.
Thanks!
