They specified they’ll only assemble the machine in US. You barely need a bunch of people with screwdriver for that;)

That's most definitely not what they announced. Specifically in their announcement, they said some manufacturing will be moving stateside, and they listed the locations involved in part sourcing. They also specifically said manufactured in US, not assembled.

According to government records, the Mac Pro only ended up getting an import exemption for 10-15 "parts." Obviously the Mac Pro has more than 10-15 parts, and those 10-15 parts are likely including different BTO options. The paperwork stated that options like the video cards fall under those 10-15 parts.

I think Apple is double dipping a bit. They're counting Oregon as a "source" when that is likely the Xeon CPUs. But there are other locations they listed that are likely new sourcing.

They just figured out in what country they will assemble these. LOL.

They might ship the first 10 units on 12/31/19. Preorders will open 8 weeks before that. Rest assured, your credit card will be charged when order is placed.

goMac according to AI:
”Specifically, the chief executive said Apple is looking for ways to continue building — more accurately assembling — its Mac Pro desktop domestically.”
If you have other sources please share them:)

Or better yet, “Available for preorder fall, 2019. Ships early 2020.”

I forget which iPhone it was, but I remember preordering, seeing my Amex hit for it, paying the bill, then receiving a couple-few weeks later.

Smart move on their part, collect the revenue one quarter, ship the next. Makes your balance sheet look nice. I’m not ordering til ship dates are under a week.

That's the older quote before they were forced to move manufacturing to the US. Four days ago they announced the US move, and the documentation filed with the government limits their international production to 10-15 parts.

"As part of its commitment to US economic growth, Apple today confirmed that its newly redesigned Mac Pro will be manufactured in Austin, Texas."
-AND-
"The value of American-made components in the new Mac Pro is 2.5 times greater than in Apple’s previous generation Mac Pro."

Again, they've literally filed paperwork with the government testifying that only 10-15 parts will be made outside the US, and the rest will all be made in the US.

10-15 parts is pretty much the whole box minus a few screws.

2.5x $20 isn’t much.

That's not how accounting works.

Yea, so basically we're just talking about 'assembled' in the USA.

I couldn't give a rat's ass where the components are made, shipped to, or bolted together. I just want to buy a new Mac Pro computer before I die. Is that too much to ask?

Yes, this is getting beyond frustrating. I really wish I'd just switched to PC rather than wait this long for a new computer, that was a bad decision that I regret now. If I'd have done it a few years ago I'd be totally used to Windows by now.

Just to make you feel a little bit better about staying on Mac, my PC auto updated itself which broke octane render, which I had to update to later nvidia driver to fix (after trying lots of other things). So time wasted there, and if that was for urgent client work I would have been freaking out, but luckily it was just for a personal project.

I keep flip flopping between Mac and PC, as sadly now there isn't a 'best' option. I've been thinking about getting an oculus VR headset for 3D modelling, but this is for windows only. And also love the look of the pro display xdr, which is obvs Mac only. And as much as its great that octane & redshift renderers are been made for Mac, I think PC will be better choice for GPU rendering, with nvidia support. But then there is amazing beautiful finder. decisions decsions.

Think it will be easier to make a decision once Mac Pro pricing and GPU render benchmarks are out.

Sometimes I rue the day I ever discovered GPU rendering and wish for simpler times!

I should have bought the 10- or 14-core iMac Pro when it came out. I'd have had two good years with it, instead of plodding along with my 2010 Mac Pro. But the die is cast now: it's new Mac Pro or bust!

Are you on C4D or something else? Your name rings a bell.

I'm a C4D user, @skippermonkey - been using Redshift and Octane for about two years on a cheesegrater with a 1080ti, but it's never been stable. Kernel Panics and booting back to the login screen are part of the daily grind. I just want a machine where I can render stuff and not be constantly dealing with tech issues. I don't care if the Mac versions of Octane and Redshift are slower than the PC versions, so long as they're stable. At this point I'm just tired of even thinking about it.

yeah I feel similar in retrospect. But this is the tricky thing with Apple product buying hey. Never know what’s around the corner, and at that point we didn’t know it would have been another two years until new Mac Pro.

I did recently try a refurb iMacPro and it was nice, but felt weird to be spending lots of money on a new but two year old computer, so returned it. And now with new Xeon-w 2200 chips they could update it, but if / when? Classic Apple buying dilemmas.

My guess is that many people who complain about the price are hobbiest or people who can’t afford/don’t need pricier configuration(no matter if they come from Apple, HP or wathever).
If you invest about 15000$ you can get a very good configuration(compared to competitors), especially if you don’t purchase RAM and storage from Apple, if you plan to keep your WS for about 5 years it will cost you about 8$ a day, if somebody can not absorb that little sum within a day of work then they should seriously reconsider their job.
I fail to see how this is a counter argument to those people who fall into this category and are voicing their disappointment Apple doesn't offer a lower cost, internally expandable Mac. There is a market for an internally expandable Mac that provides less than top of the line specs for less cost.

IMO, the iMacPro was aimed at keeping power users in the Mac ecosystem until they could get the MacPro 7,1 out the door.

+1 on the Windows auto-update madness. My workplace is Linux/Windows so I sometimes do transcodes and renders there. After a couple of auto-update Waterloos I am back to letting my cMP 5,1 churn overnight - at least that consistently works as expected, albeit slower than a Windows box with 4 2080Tis.

Figure were in the same (partially submerged) boat. I was on a 980Ti for a while, but Octane/C4D was so bugged and flakey I gave up and added an RX580 to upgrade to Mojave. Been very stable since, and I've just stuck with CPU rendering. I'm really hoping Octane X delivers, and can make use of all that AMD horsepower I intend adding. Of course, after all the hullabaloo of the Mac Pro launch, we've heard nothing since, not from Apple or Otoy or Maxon. It's like they decided to not ship the hardware and forgot to tell anyone. So now it's mid October and the wait goes on...

As of today I'm thinking it will be a few days before, or on, November 1. What is pushing that hope is Apple's announcement of a free year's subscription to Apple TV+ with the purchase of a Mac or certain other Apple products. Apple TV+ launches its service on November 1.

Yes, they do indeed have other Macs but still I have to keep my hopes up.

Unlikely.

If there is any kind of dog and pony show around this then the top execs are probably booked a couple days before November 1.

I think Apple needing to get FireTV , Roku, etc apps out .. iOS stabilized a bit, macOS stabilized a bit are far bigger factors. Those AppleTV promos aren't going to sell significant number of Mac Pros. And frankly they have to make more than some Mac Pros in order to sell them.

USA elections are on the Nov 5th. So perhaps the 6th or so would be a more likely date than anything next week.

There’s a rumor floating about an Adobe MAX preview for MP7,1. Probably just means a new MP will be used for demos, but maybe someone from Apple will speak if not released by then.

It's getting close. They could make an announcement today.
