I have limped along with a 2009 Mac Pro waiting for this moment. Simple upgradeability on my own was its main appeal to me although I also like the freedom to connect it to the monitor of my choice (in my former production environment I saw firsthand how susceptible iMac screens were subject to funky degradation with heavy usage). Since I do a lot of photography with large files I rapidly fill up hard drives and liked being able to simply snap in new higher-capacity drives as needed.
I’m looking for some info to help me configure my new machine. I would like to start with the 12-core model with the base 32 GB of Ram. I know I can upgrade the Ram for cheaper myself. I would like to go with the Radeon Pro W5700X if it’s available soon.
My main questions are about the storage to go with. It looks like the SSD storage that ships with it will not be user-uprageable. Yet there are also options to add more internal storage with the MPX modules and outboard storage with thunderbolt connections. Is the Pegasus 4Ri something to consider? Does it really offer safe backup if it’s internal? Are there outboard options that would work just as efficiently for less? I haven’t used a RAID storage before, so how much does it actually store vs the space it uses to backup data? Any help trying to decide how to configure the storage options would be appreciated.
