Someone really REALLY needs a BASIC economic lesson.
you know.. trying to depend Apple.. sometimes makes some of you outrageously ridiculous.

Instead of taking the high road  why don't you give this much needed BASIC economic lesson.

Do you really think you contribute to this thread and forum by posting snide comments, attempting to make yourself seem more educated then everyone else? I think not.

This shows your lack of maturity and knowledge on the subject. A mature and informed person would make a clear, concise, and rational argument without resorting to name calling.

Dell have sales all the time, so no one in their right mind would buy one if it weren't on sale. therefore the real price of a Dell is its sale price, not the price they state before the sale.

If apple dropped their prices on their entire range I doubt they will sell any more computers, they might sell more MBP, MP, and iMac, but less MB, and Mini's. Most Window's users here in Australia think Macs are ****, and Most wouldn't even know one if it hit them in the head! So dropping prices wont make them switch. So Apple doesn't have a major competitor, unlike Dell, who have 000's of companies buidling IBM compatibles.

and yes this thread has changed, The MacPro looks sweet, can't wait for mine to come, well only 4 more weeks!

With respect, regarding all the pricing/margin/economics discussion, perhaps everyone can agree that:

a) Most, if not all, Apple's marketing folks have passed Marketing 101 and know about profit and margin and such.

b) There are items, such as supply chain management, that an outside observer can, at best, only speculate about that affect pricing as much as basic supply and demand equations. (If you have to commit upfront to buy so many CPUs, motherboards, drives, etc. and dump them at a loss if you guess wrong, it tends to affect the risk/reward ratio significantly.)

c) In any case, it's really way of the topic of the OP anyway - perhaps you should create your own thread to debate it.

Take care,
P.M.

Any of the Video Card Support Screen Rotation

Does anyone know if any of the video cards for the MacPro support screen rotation? My G4 did running Tiger but my G5 doesn't because of the video card (nVidia GeForce 6600). That was a big disappointment.

Do you have, like, an F20 key??
I think that's what the eject key would be...

NVIDEA Didn't Get The Memo To Support Rotation For Dell Monitors In Their Mac Drivers

I know what you mean. My 2004 Dual 2.5GHz G5 with PCI-X slots had an ATI card that did rotation as well while the October 2005 PCIe NVIDEA cards in my Quad and now my new Fry's $864.26 Such-A-Deal 2GHz Dual Core G5 both have no rotation support. Until ATI ships their G5 Quad PCIe card, read that a G5 ATI Radeon X1900 XT is coming, we are out in the cold for rotation on PCIe G5's.

But I think if you buy the ATI Card for your Mac Pro you will find it supports rotation. I do not know this as a fact. But ATI has been supporting rotation for a number of years now, so I believe it's built into all of their cards' drivers. I'm not sure if rotational support code came with Panther or not. But it just showed up in Tiger + Dell rotationable monitors. Unfortunately NVIDEA didn't get the memo instructing all manufacturers of computer video cards to support rotation for Dell monitors. :(

Do we have any readers with the ATI card in their Mac Pros yet who also have a Dell rotationable monitor? Or is that not being delivered until next month? I imagine Barefeats will have the definitive answer as soon as they get their ATI card. I'm 90% sure ATI has it in everything they sell. It's a feature they list for all their cards on their website.

Too bad we can't get a less expensive card for such a small feature to be onboard. Wonder if we could petition NVIDEA to add it to a new driver? Or maybe it's Apple that isn't writing Dell rotational support into the drivers since they seem to be who's making the NVIDEA cards for Macs. :(

F12 Is The Default Non-Apple Keyboard Eject Key

F12 is the eject key on non-Apple keyboards. And you can program any other function key to be the eject key. Option + F12 will eject the lower optical if you have one installed. Also, right clicking or Control + left/single click on the media on the desktop will reveal an eject option. And of course the optical media is always listed and accompanied by an eject button in any finder window since Tiger.

Well, I just ordered my Mac Pro with ATI card, looks like it will come in mid September, bummer. Hopefully it supports rotation. My PC has the Radeon X850 which does support it, so hopefully everybody is right and it's part of the drivers (though nVidia supports rotation in the windows drivers for some cards but not others).

When I get mine, I'll give it a try. Or, maybe I'll try hooking up an external monitor to my MacBook and see what happens.

MacBook would be a great test to know. My guess is not. MacBook Pro would be even better if anyone has one they can test with a Dell rotationable monitor please let us know as they all have ATI Video inside.

I was just reading on Nvidias site and the Quadro FX 4500 X2 has (2) 512mb GPU's on the Video card for 1GB of Video memory and (4) DVI connectors so we can hook up 4 panels off of one card, and with the possibility of running (2) of these cards Thats 2GB of Video and (8) displays, that would make for a very "Swordfish" like computer room. Swordfish the movie to make that clear. (8) Displays hooked up to the (8) core Mac Pro! I'm down for it!!!!!

Flame me not, for I worketh on conversion.

Been researching the Quadro FX line for a while.. pseudo-dream vid card for me.

The Quadro FX 4500 is capable of running 4 monitors. Remember, it has double dual-link outputs, plus the stereo goggle dealio. There's a dual-link dongle that breaks it into double singles, if that makes any sense.

Of course, it can only handle 2 of the 30" monitors. Still alot of horsepower in terms of a video card, though.

The 4500 X2 is double stacked, single PCI-X connecting 4500's. Essentially a SLI'ed card without SLI'ing. Much like some of their high end gaming video cards. That means, with dongles, the 4500X2 will run 8 monitors straight out of the box.

The question: Do the dongles come with the system ordered with the video card, from the factory?
