Well to be fair, a PC workstation designed to look like a Mac Pro doesn't do much for anyone.

Agreed. HW is so utterly worthless if all it does is run Windows/ Linux. Meaning no hard-on is worth having for anything pre-built as it is always not exactly what you want and more expensive. If you want HW bragging rights build it yourself or go home. Need of support is equally laughable. This IS a PC you know. Support is worthless just have backup media at the ready.

John Gruber on "The Talk Show" podcast said that he's betting on a Mac Pro update. He also said that he thinks they'll keep updating it for years, but on a not as quick upgrade cycle.

Gruber is usually right about things, so let's all hope he continues being right.

I guess you've never seen a Compaq...

The compaq below looks better. Sorry. That thing looks horrible with those ugly handles and sorry ass text across the front. Pathetic. If I was the bank who made that business loan I would be like

Apple didn't always get things right.

I know it is dated, but that was ugly back then, too. They sold that as late as 2000. The original iMac was hideous as well, and unfortunately they inspired plenty of weak imitations for design cues.

I dunno man. In a sea of beige boxes that was pretty dope at the time.

The iBook is and was a beautiful product. Still got mine. It took those boxy and colorless designs and turned tables completely. Rounded edges, nothing boxy, bright and enthusing color, convenient for the time.

That was my first Apple Mac (had used earlier ones but was the first I owned. Miss it and rather fond of that. Even came with a carry handle built into the laptop.

The new Mac designs are better in most ways though. The Mac Pro looks great. When I go to an Apple Store I see one there, none in reseller stores.

It looks almost like Apple's Mac Pro. Since when is that ugly?

Having used OS X on a daily basis since 2005 and having observed Apple's increasing disinterest in OS X, I think a system with Windows (or Linux) on it is a GOOD thing.

Why? That just makes it like EVERYTHING. Can't throw a rock and not hit a HW based Win box.

I can only dream of a MacPro that has ten hard drive bays in addition to two 5.25" bays...

Brian Tong (I know you all love his antics), just held a funeral for the Mac Pro. Claims people in the know told him the MP will be really EOL'd.

Is it possible the MP is getting released at the same time as the iMac?

Maybe some new feature is getting added to both (Cactus Ridge thunderbolt?), and the engineering / orders aren't being rushed just for the Mac Pro.

All these new rumors about iMacs being released in June, and still nothing on the Mac Pro. This silence is pointing in only one direction if you ask me.

When was the last time Apple was verbal on anything? I still can't find a lot of Sandy Bridge E workstation announcements. Intel says they're shipping, but I'm not sure of quantity. Ivy Bridge E is Q2 next year assuming no further delays. Their update structuring is getting a bit weird.

Supermicro workstations are shipping. We've already got one hackintoshed on a thread here and I've got one due in the next few days. NewEgg, Amazon, and many others are shipping the CPUs.

Yes, HP's not shipping yet but it's not like these don't exist.

What rumours are you expecting?

The new Mac Pro will be exactly the same as the old one with new motherboard (thunderbolt, usb3), new xeon CPUs and updated video cards.

There's no rumoured new screen to speculate about, because it doesn't include one. There's no new case design to speculate about, because it doesn't need one - the "desktop mac form factor" enclosure is a solved problem, there's no problem with the current design - hence re-tooling the factory to build something different "just because" would be stupid.

The only components that will be altered are commodity PC hardware components that any OEM can and does buy in bulk from Intel, etc.

Hence, there's no one in the supply chain who can really speculate, because there's no top secret hardware under development and certainly not floating about outside the factory in field testing, as the Mac Pro is a desktop bound box.

This is the reason you don't see Mac Pro rumours, not because apple has suddenly decided to kill their IOS developers; the boxes aren't portable, to be seen outside, and the enclosure is a solved problem.

edit:
hah. as to the clamshell candy ibook being ugly - compare to a circa 2000 model dell or thinkpad. :D
