Interesting, what was finally broken for $1250 ?
For
Well we're in a spot... I can't drop $5k on a iMac Pro, and I'd rather not buy an iMac Retina for $3k. So today I agreed to pay Apple $1200 to fix the Mac Pro. It was an absurd decision for 5 year old technology, but I can always turn around and sell it used down the road. If it ends up being more than that, it will be a total loss.
I hope it’s more than a bare bones quad core as you can get a refurb one for less than $1700 that can be covered by AppleCare.

I’d also love to know what they replaced for $1200. Sounds to me like a main board and power supply, plus the fan and top assembly...

The nMP was not designed to be a 3,000+ cat heater. Its a cat problem, not a design problem.
Yeah. That thing was probably jam packed with cat hair that turned to a sloppy mess when it absorbed the puke.
Maybe you should sue God for the design of the cat?
My husband and I have a pair of Maine Coons - famously long-haired. (My avatar pic is a Maine Coon.) We harvest dust bunnies at will.

The great room has a 14.5' high ceiling, with a whole house exhaust fan grille at about 12' off the floor. We have to regularly vacuum the grille to remove the layers of cat hair that have been sucked into it. Twelve feet off the ground....

I could imagine that an MP6,1 would ingest a lot of cat hair - but it would be low in the machine by the input grille.

The "cat knocked liquid onto the keyboard" has happened a couple of more times - so I have two keyboards so that I can swap in a dry one after an accident,

Sure, the cat did it , whatever you say ... ;)
I've had a few of those cat incidents, and I don't even have one ...

Problem solved.

Never heard of projectile vomiting ?

I had thought of that too, so maybe a box around it? With ventilation?

That thing is awesome! Where did you get it? Or perhaps you made it yourself ?
I am sure, there must be a great rounded design cabinet solution out there, - somewhere. This blog is disturbing. I guess many of us knows how it feels, when that data backup doesn't work the way it is intended for, or the workhorse computer somehow strikes dead or the firmware trashes the boot up. But who counts in cats as a threat to data safety?

I always loved the Mac Pro 2013 design, and I wish I had one. Great machines and one bad ass look on the desk. Now lets collect different solutions, how those instances can be avoided in the future.

Ugh why would someone shave off or cut their cat's whiskers? That's horrible.

I have seven cats, two of which are Maine Coons, have to dust/vacuum each day. One of the cats likes to bite cables too. o_O

That's really too bad about what happened to the OP.

But reading about experiences like these reminds me why I don't have pets.

Its an cat issue, not a design flaw.

I don't want to be over apologetic but few facts to remember:

  1. Heath Exhaust on top is not just thermodynamically right, even its proven less prone to accumulate dust and hair than horizontal air flow, since gravity acts as a natural particle separator, while on horizontal solutions gravity does nothing,
  2. Filters: Horizontal cooling use to have filters since its more prone to dust accumulation.
  3. What does a dam Kitten playing in the same place as an expensive workstation?, its against basic safety and work segregation sense, same or even worst could happen to a cheese grater, not in the same way but by the same offender.
P.D. I have an Akita (japanese dog, look for hachiko movie) and a Cat too (no breed), twice a year my home is like a fluff factory decorating all the house with cotton, not a single computer has come with issues, just basic vacuum/brush cleaning (mac mini, iMac, Mac Pro and MBP), no computer in my house doubles as cradle.

You must not have any pets or children.

I know how challenging is to avoid dangers in Home Office (sometimes my Akita tried to post here), but the workplace should consider this, some people in these situations simple didn't implement safety guidelines in order to proudly exhibit their tcMP, what happens? pets/children careless drop things where you could foresee this to happen. sadly common sense is the less common of the senses, do not blame a functionally right design on your own careless, same or even worst things could happen to a cheese grater if you allow.

Blame the tcMP on its expandability or thermal restrictions, not for not being water/dust proof, no Mac comes with an IPX rating yet.

I'm not saying it's a design flaw with the nMP. What I am saying is that some designs are more resistant to issues than others. The top venting nature of the nMP means things can easily fall into it. No matter what mistakes / things happen. I can honestly say I've never had anything fall into my cMP. In an effort to keep things from falling into my nMP I placed a cover on top of it. Because of this when I went to run some benchmarks I completely forgot about the cover which prevented it from properly exhausting heat. Thankfully I was sitting next to it when I noticed the fan spin up. My mistake? Certainly. However I have all kinds of things sitting on the top of my cMP and I don't have to worry about it.

Hmmm.....

Obviously the Mac Pro was underutilized... if it had been properly loaded with tasks, the fans should have been spinning fast enough to expel the vomit back into the cats face.

Picture a blender operated without its cap in place. Now picture the look on the cats face.

Having the computer revomit onto the cat would have certainly been a lesson that cat wouldn't forget.

On the other hand, the garbage can styling does indicate that the designers imagined a waste receptical. If only they'd imagined a recycle bin, perhaps the machine would have come back to life as something better.

on the Cheese grater horizontal venting nature, that reads: Things easily WALK into it...

Apple sells you a Computer, not survival gear, I dont buy its more prone to damage just coz it top venting, its not different if you are careless, and being honest, what are the possibilities something vomit (or spill) just on top of the mMP vent? (unless you placed it on the floor)...

Not a cheese grater, but now I remember when I was a student, some dude drop a coca cola on top of a NCR mainframe (actually a Tower server), the liquid run to the logic board from the side vent fins (few smaller fins it had to increase airflow on critical zones), just over the Ram and CPU socket: 5000$ in damages (pre-2000 era), on towers people use to place things on top as a table, that creates hazzards, you cant do the same on the tcMP, thus the odds for water damage are even smaller.

I can't say I've ever seen anyone walk into a cMP. Nor can I say I've ever seen anything fall into a cMP.

Having said that no one is asking the nMP to be "survival gear". But rational people will admit the cMP is more resistant to common problems (i.e. things falling) than the nMP. You can say careless, accident, or any other similar description all day long, that won't change the fact the nMP is more prone to careless, accidental, what-have-you damage than the cMP design.

"the fact the nMP is more prone to careless"

Never heard such a crazy thing. Imagine a cMP with a srewdriver lying in top, and one opens the chassis,
the screwdriver rolling and "omg" falling down in the machine. Or a cup of coffee.
Seriously, some may not like a nMP, but we dont need to invent such (stupid) things.
