Bringing the Mac Pro to India was a trick :) Basically I gutted it (for weight) and wrapped it in jeans and clothes and it took up 1 suitcase then shoved the drive and memory risers and video card into random carry-ons and brought it that way.

Shipping will be a job because customs are corrupt and backward, better to courier it personally.

wow that's dedication right there.

They're 30% more on full retail - and no refurbs or anything possible, so maybe 50% more just impossible for me. Buying it cheap in the US was hard enough financially :)

But I'm glad I have such an upgradeable Mac (vs any other) that I won't have to do it again for several years. Thinking of putting in Quad Core processors if that makes sense once Snow Leopard comes around - to extend the life even further.

Holy SMOKES! It would be fun to see you work out slipping a 42 inch plasma in next time :D . Good creative work, kudos!

42 Plasma would be awesome. I've danced around that the best I can: I have a 24" and 30" monitors (1 suitcase each - a year apart) and then for home theater I brought in a 720p Projector - which I watch on a 8-foot screen. Kinda best of both worlds :p

I think a 32" LCD TV would be the biggest I can possibly get in a suitcase.

My 8x3.0 Clovertown box with 4 HDDs and all DIMM bays full, an 8800GT and a Blackmagic Intensity Pro idles a bit over 400 without the display :(

Just curious, when you all say "at idle" does that mean putting it to sleep? I have a 8 core 3.0Ghz and was wondering if it would use 150+watts asleep. If it does then I would/should probably just leave it off until I plan on using it.

When I posted my numbers idle or at rest refers to the computer running but with just the finder running. Sleeping uses maybe 10 watts.

Whew, that's good to know. I've heard it's best to leave the computer on rather than constantly turning it off and on. I think I'll just leave it on and set it to sleep when I'm not using it. Thanks for the reply!!!

Do you smuggle all this stuff in suitcases? lol

Hey there.

If anybody here has a current for former generation Mac Pro, and a wattmeter, I'd really like to hear how much power it draws in normal usage.

Browsing the internet my 8-core 2006 2.66 Mac Pro eats 195W ~ 220W total (at the mains).
That's 5 HDDs, 8 DIMMS (12 GB total), 10 USB devices, and the 7300GT card.

The two LG L246WH 24" monitors burn 16W ~ 35W each depending on the color being displayed. If I crank the brightness to 100% and display an all white screen on a hot day they can hit 70W ~ 73W each. I do that sometimes when I use them as diffuse light sources for DT macro photography.

When copying from Drive 1 to Drive 2 and from the RAID to Drive 1 and running graphic based benchmarks, and running memory bench mark tests, and burning all 8 CPUs at 100% my mac pro averages 350W. When quitting several of the benchmarks apps as quickly as possible it peaked once for about 1 second or a little less at 373.6W. When I power on the Mac Pro under 10.4 (long ago) it could draw over 700W for about a 2 second interval. At either a later release of 10.4 or the first 10.5 (I forget) that was reduced to about 500W. I haven't retested start-up pulls again since then though they seem to be even less now.

Basically yes, everything in my signature (and a whole lot more - Velodyne 5.1 surround speakers - the Sub was quite a job) was 'smuggled' in suitcases. Only the 22" 1080p Samsung monitors were bought here in India - they were only like 10-20% more expensive.

Just brought in a slow cooker for the Mrs. - one small dent but works fine :)

1.21 gigawatts of course! :D

Joking aside, I pull around 400 watts while encoding in handbrake, pegs all 8 cores....

Wow!! That's a interesting way of doing it!

Aren't MacPro's available in India? or just too costly?

great way to bring back a thread

FTR: my MBP chews about 80Watts max.
my PC/device power boards hit around 400W on idle.
all up im sure that i chew a good 800W with everything combined  but i never have them all on.

MacPro 2006 drawing 400+ watts

Hello,
can someone help me identifying the cause why my power meter shows consumption of 400+ watts when the system is on idle?

Hardware monitor says app 100watts on Power Supply Line 1.

Thanks!

What the hardware monitor reports and what the system draws at the main are two different things. Right now my mac pro is drawing 336 at the wall plug, this includes the 24" display. I not sure of your setup but 400+ does not seem out of line

Hello,

2009 MP, 2.66 Octo.
-1 SSD
-4 7200 HDs (Internal)
-4 7200 HDs (4 bay external enclosure)

-Apple 24inch Cinema Display

All this on the same UPC = 190-200 watts in regular use.

That number seems consistent with what I have read- app. 150-170 W when idle. Mine is way over 400 and its not filled with power hungry extras. Thats why I dont understand the power consumption.

I understand, that the Hardware monitor may not report everything in reality. But such a difference would mean, that the rest of the power is used by the fans and power supply? 300 watts?

THe system is fairly basic, with the original passive cooling Nvidia video, 3 GB of memory and runs from 60GB SSD, the other HDs are spun down. Really dont expect this to be drawing above 150-170 watts, as per specs from Apple itself (on idle)

Thanks,
Pavel

idle=sleep ?

I got a new old Mac Pro 1,1 and upgraded the Xeons to 5150 3.0 GHz. It has 4 1GB FB-DIMMS and Ati 1900X video. With the OWC 60GB SSD it starts in 6 secs, hence with the eye on electricity and heat (AZ summer) I might use the shut-off frequently.
In the thread above, does idle means sleep ?

Mine is pretty much identical, except for the processors being the originals. In Sleep mode it draws app 16 W. Idle means no workload in running system. processor utilization around 1%.

If anyone cares...

Mac Pro 1.1, 3.0 x 8-core, pair of NVidias, 4 internal HDs, 4 x 24" LCD's... pulls 1050 watts at start-up, 650 at idle, 800 at cruise, 1000 under heavy load. Measured with a digital multi-meter.

Had to split components between 2 UPS units with the solo one beeping like crazy cause it couldn't keep up with the power demand. It's like a 550va or something. Sprung for a 2000va for the 2nd. Things are quiet now.

Just out of interest Which model/brand of UPS units do you use? I'm guessing you keep the Mac plugged into one UPS and monitors into the other?
