No but it is a running process which is part of the os. So you can really rule it out as a potential cause of problems.

That is true, but if do not log in to iMessage and you do not connect your account to mobile number, its daemon actually does not do anything.

True but it is still running. Although it is not using any process power it is loaded into ram

Ok, same as me.....what apps do you leave open before putting MP to sleep ?

Usually sticky notes, messages, and itunes are always open 24/7. I close all work apps like fcp x, red cine, da vinci resolve, or firefox chrome when im done using them.

VLC is killing my Mac Pro.....everytime a had freeze VLC was active. Aside its problems with playing files from shared locations (browse VLC forums and you will see), this is too much.

I am testing UMplayer now.....it is very good.

I removed my eye TV usb stick from my Mac and removed the software. I am hoping that this is the cause of my graphics issues.

Incidentally I installed El capitan to see if that would correct the issue. Yesterday I had 2 gpu crashes and 2 today. Spoke to apple support at length today about this. They where quite sympathetic about it. It has been escalated to the engineer dept. Will report back if what I have done has cleared up.

Don't hold out too much hope for escalation to the engineering department - my last nmp problem spent over 2 months with them getting nowhere

So what did they have to say when you called them? What solutions did they suggest you take?
They captured data, logs & reports. I sent them lots of description of causes and symptoms and they made all the right noises. Then nothing. I occasionally got them to bump my case to a supervisor who apologised. Told me what I already knew and did nothing. Sadly. I went though 5 AppleCare reps!

When you went to the Apple Store what did they do?
Verified the problem, said it needed sorting and took it in under warranty. They tried to repair - changed out almost every part and declared in unrepairable and replaced the whole unit (second time this year!!)

Think I might do that. Spending a lot of money I don't expect it to have these problems. I am wondering if playing graphic intensive games might be pushing it over the edge? For example I use boot camp run the game and then restart to go back to os x. The fan is quite high and the heat it belting out. It soon goes back to normal when it reboots.

Still can't say anything definitive about causes, I'd like save anyone all the time I wasted. I know how frustrating it can get!

I suggest you people stop blaming software. I ran into this problem once with NOTHING installed on my system. It was a completely fresh install of Yosemite and no peripherals plugged in except for keyboard and mouse.

Now Apple is replacing my Mac Pro's GPU A, GPU B and Motherboard and some other thing as well. Hopefully that resolves the issue.

I think I have finally found a break through! I was looking in my console log and discovered this! This error is from the El Capitan Console log and it shows that there maybe a bug with the driver which comes with Yosemite and/or El Capitan.

Interesting.

I have experienced that with El Capitan as well.

Are you doing anything special at that time when errors appear ?
I could try to replicate that...maybe we could get some answers..

No, not at all I was copying files across to my NAS drive and went away to make a cup of tea and then I came back to find that my screen was frozen. I had to do a hard boot to carry on with copying files.

You need machine on network from which you could reboot your Mac Pro via SSH so you can avoid hard reset.
Than you enable Remote Login in Preferences / Share, and then you can do this:
ssh chama98@mac-pro-ip-adress
enter your password
sudo reboot

You can to that from any OS which have SSH client.

Oh right thanks for that! :)

Or you could just turn off your Thunderbolt display off and then on which gives you access to your computer again but the GPU will not wake up which makes the computer super slow and you will have to reboot anyway. But now that you have access to the cursor, you can reboot properly.
