I think it's a mistake to think Apple is superior. In 2006, 2007, and 2008 they had a pretty good price|performance ratio. But they didn't have "the best" design or even the best hardware even then. Apple is primarily a software house and at that they rock! At hardware not so much. Their cases and form designs are very nice tho! Their motherboards are pretty much by Intel. Nothing much under the hood of an Apple has much to do with Apple at all.

I think so too. We may not be in the majority here tho.

By "design" I kinda meant like, motherboard design/features and other design decisions like going with EFI. I think better would be 12 or 16 RAM sticks, 6 or more PCI slots, 8 SATA connections, maybe some SAS, more drive sleds (Well that might be a case mod :p), being able to use all video cards, I dunno, other stuff too. :)

I don't know for sure, one way or the other. Personally, I've never said it's hideous. It's appearance is nice. I just need more drive space than it offers. :D

External RAID enclosures (SAS connectors) are not cheap. Typically $600USD for an 8 bay model, and that's without a redundant PSU, if it's needed. :(

You can buy a seriously decent tower case for that, which would include the backplanes for the drives. :)

final word on hackintosh qmaster render farm?

Last year I built a "render/edit farm" of 7 'hack-Pros' for a friend who was doing a film on a decent but still shoestring budget- for the same price as two decently spec'd MacPros. (Plus they already had two actual MacPros).
...
The machines performed flawlessly, and the project came in on time and even a little under budget since everything took less time than originally expected.

Have been itching for months to add to our current render farm (40 procs across 4Mpros, all attached to an Xsan), but haven't been able to find any definitive specs on a qmaster-friendly hackintosh. Any chance you'd share some wisdom as to your:

(a) hardware choice
(b) hkntsh installation flavor
(c) thoughts as to whether this is even worthwhile given that the hackintosh would be connected to SAN only via GigE + afp, unlike the other MPros on the farm.

Thanks for any brain on this!

I ...

... don´t want to be too noisy, but I demand a Mac Pro with expandability in mind ...

Anyone know if you can run hackintosh out of my HP Workstation XW6600? Is that possible, or do you need specific hardware?

Edit - yes it can work. Found the wiki ---

Need suggestion on this one.
HyperX13 - any IM I can find you?
thanks
