Anyone have an idea of when Apple will release the MacPro? Ads said coming in Decemebr. Thanks much. Bill

Could be wishful thinking, but I bet it's in the first half of the month and that's only because my experience with corporate finance departments is that most invoices need to be submitted earlier in the month to be paid prior to year end. So, if a department is thinking about squeezing in a purchase of new Mac Pros in 2013, a late-month release on Apple's part might preclude some corporate purchases until next year.

Many companies use fiscal years that don't coincide with the calendar year - so their "end of year" purchasing doesn't happen in December. Often they'll have quarterly budgets as well, however, so there's some pressure to deplete the quarterly budget in March, June, September and December. (HP's fiscal year isn't aligned with the quarters - their year is August-July.)

Companies also differ in when expenses are booked. My big company does not book expenses when the *order* is made, but instead when the *delivery* is made. If they don't arrive by 31 December, they aren't booked this quarter. (Maybe you realize this, since you said "invoices" and usually the "invoice" comes after the product is shipped.)

This wait is starting to get ridicules. It's December at this point they should give us a hard date of when it will be or at the very least start taking pre-orders of the thing.

I wonder if they are having production problems with the new facility? I don't really like buying the first generation of anything but in this case I have little choice.

Maybe they don't yet know when it will ship, and don't want to take pre-orders until they know when they can build and ship them.

Little point in taking pre-orders now if volume shipments will be delayed until mid-February....

I sure hope that's not the case. I need to get this thing ordered and paid for in 2013:confused:

Last year's iMac didn't start taking orders until 5-6 days before shipping. If they are consistent it probably won't be more than a weeks notice.

More likely it is a bunch of smaller issues. I also don't think they really planned on the new facility to crank out major numbers of units during the long Holiday weekend. Even the non slave labor Chinese shops slow down during local major holidays.

The first week in December probably wasn't ever on track to being a target date. The 17th and 10th were always the more likely December dates.

P.S. Also just remembered that Cook gave almost all Apple employees the week off for Thanksgiving. Again nothing particularly likely to happen that week and again into the week after that (as folks get ramped back up from vacation).

But Apple doesn't bill until shipped - so I don't think that a pre-order will help.

You may be lucky, though, a Dell T3610 with an E5-1620v2 (3.7GHz quad) shows a shipping date of tomorrow in their online store....
___

So do I, for tax reasons obviously.

You'd still get the tax benefit - just in tax year 2014.

Of course but if I get billed on 31st of December, I'll get the tax benefit exactly one year before compared to getting billed at 1st of January. So that's almost 2000$ I'll get a year before.

I think that some of the CPU's have started becoming available. Can you find any workstations using the E5-1680v2?

I would think it would be released in December if thats when Apple said it would be released.

I have no reason to think it would be released in October 2014 if it is supposed to be released in December 2013.

At this moment Apple is preoccupied with iPhones and iPads, their 'bread and butter'.

Since the MacPro is not a gift item in the traditional sense of the word, or an item that greatly benefits from having it readily available during the busy holiday shopping season, and also partially because of Apple's prior deadline history, it would not surprise me one bit if the new MacPro won't make an appearance till January.

Hopefully I'm wrong.

Do people really still think these things will ship this year?this year?

When is the last time Apple didn't hit a date they talked about ? The iMac dragged out till Nov 30 2012 but they made November and the 27" models made December.

The whole point of not talking about dates or date ranges in advance is so that when do announce them they are pretty solid.

If Apple doesn't make December or 2013 they are going to have a even bigger creditability problem than they do now in this space. They have told folks for over a year 2013 was it.

Some of the angst seems to be more so wanting to spend the Mac Pro money so can't prematurely spend it on other BlackFriday/CyberMonday/Year-end-blow-out super deals on something else.

If pessimistically shooting for the "end point" constraint then Dec 20th (end of Fall) would be their 'as late as possible' date.

(Remember the PowerMac G4 AGP 500 MHz - infinite slippage.)

But there were lots of backorders for Imacs that didn't make it until January.

Will Apple meet the deadline if they ship one unit in December? Maybe they can count the (Red) unit.

How about ten units, or a hundred, or a thousand?

While I wouldn't put the bar at having 99% of the Apple stores have units in stock ready for walk-ins, my experience with ordering E5-v2 servers makes me think that it will be a slow ramp up (and my ProLiants don't have the double-whammy of waiting for T-Bolt2 controllers).

Gotta love how folks grope back about a decade for consistent Apple behavior.

On what? standard configs generally flowed. Especially if 21.5" versions. Even the 27" was generally on track of expectations that Apple set

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1510489/

One page 1-2 there is panic... by 6-8 there is generally some flow in the USA for those who ordered on first day or so. there seemed to be orders that got "stuck" in some queue along the way but some more a glitch of how Apple assigned orders to whatever production/delivery queues they had set up. From the all the symptoms it looks like Apple tried to jury rig some kluge by hiring contractors ad hoc to try to brute force a solution... when the real problem was some cluster screw up that needed a root cause solution.

The Mac Pro shows very little sign of that at all. There were numorous rumors of iMac slides ( Apple was shooting for xxxx but problems glitched and now sliding).

Is it going to be a glitch free launch? Probably not.

Orders ahead of the supply means there is a demand bubble. It has realtively little to do whether they turned on the spigot or not.

No and no.

Factory probably has a run rate in the thousands rage so a thousand means the spigot is on.

LOL.... like most Mac Pros are sold that way. It isn't even an appropriate bar regardless of what height set it at.

Apple not shipping on a slow flow of components actually makes it more likely they can ship when finally turn on the spigot. Instead of dribbling out a very slow rates over weeks to pretend Intel's release date really had any volume behind it.... just wait until build a inventory and use that to meet a later demand bubble. The number of units shipped by end of December would change much.

At best they will get some units out to more high profile customers for PR and damage control purposes. The general public won't get near one of these things till next year sometime. I would even go as far as saying Order in Dec, ship by late January, maybe even pushing into Feb.

I don't see anybody else shipping with the latest Xeons, so this may turn out to be true.

Dell is quoting next-day shipping on T3610 with the same quad E5-v2 as the base Mac Mini Pro.

I'm not sure the fact that other vendors aren't shipping systems with E5-v2 Xeons in volume is indicative of anything. It's not unprecedented for Apple to get first dibs on new Intel processors.
