I don't understand why the form factor has anything to do with it. It's not about thermals, it's about properly supporting the feature set of the new chips. As an example, M5 supports SSDs with performance akin to PCI-E Gen 5, and so needs a fast enough interconnect on the logic board between the silicon and the storage dies.

Because like the MacBooks, the form factor of the current Mac Studio hasn't changed, so they can just drop in the latest revision of the hardware unless anything has changed in the tolerances relating to things like thermals - something which will be different from the laptops if there's an M5 Ultra chip for example.

I have a feeling that the M5 Mac Studio is going to best the best selling Mac Studio since 2022. Pre orders are going to be wild and if you slip the first batch, most likely you would be waiting weeks to get yours. My Apple Card balance is $0 just waiting for the Mac Studio to be announced and place my order 🙂
That chart makes me feel like the guys who are eagerly waiting for the next iPhone Mini
Still waiting for my M3 Ultra, revised estimate is now mid May after ordering beginning of Feb.

To be fair, that chart shows 2023's numbers and that was the year the M2 Ultra Mac Pro launched so if anyone was going to buy an Apple Silicon Mac Pro, that was the year they were doing to do so. In comparison, M2 was a minimal update over the M1 in the Mac Studio from 2022, so I could see Studio sales being relatively stagnant that year.

For sure. Those numbers seem to fluctuate a lot year to year depending on what Apple releases. I couldn't find anything publicly available with 2025 numbers, but here's what CIRP has for 2020-2024.

Some of us just don't need the screen, keyboard, trackpad, battery, etc. that comes with a laptop 😅
The Mac Studio makes perfect sense while obviously being cheaper and offering better thermals / noise ratio.

Couldn’t agree more, I have a Studio for exactly that reason - we are in the minority, but who cares! 😁
I had three Intel iMacs over 15 years - the newest was ten years old when I bought a Studio. I couldn't bear to get rid of any of them because the screens were still great. Finally recycled (hopefully) them a few months ago.
For me, all-in-one computers are a waste. Three perfectly good screens attached to obsolete computers.

That's fine with me. I don't really need one, and I have several home improvement projects and a new car purchase occupying my attention.

That bit about thermals is key. I don't need a thin and lightweight laptop. I ESPECIALLY don't want a battery for something that's going to be plugged in and on 24/7 anyway. 🙂
While I would like m.2 ssd slots, the mac studio is great as-is otherwise!
And I don't think the high end mac mini is a good replacement either.

Running the same, Mac Studio M1 Max and can’t wait to get the Mac Studio M5 Max. Like you mentioned, it’s starting to get “slow”, mostly compared to my 16” MBP M5 Pro.

Well yes, the M5 Pro is faster in both CPU and GPU related tasks compared to the M1 Max. It may be louder under load though 😅

I was planning ahead for M5 Studios (whenever that could be…. 😬)
Based on the speed of the M5 Max MacBook Pro (approx 29500), I am drawn to the M5 Max variant of the Studio with 128GB ram or more (if possible).
Considering this is faster than any Ultra version, I don’t particularly need the M5 Ultra extra speed.

That's not really an apples to apples comparison considering the M3 Ultra was the previous generation chip vs the M4. It would be like comparing the current M5 Max to a M4 Ultra if it ever existed. The appropriate comparison would be the current chip, Max vs Ultra when the Ultra is released or compare the M3 Max to the M3 Ultra.

That's such a weird take when the Mac Studio with M3 Ultra and Mac Studio with M4 Max were released on the same day as a press release.

Nope not at all. There won't be a M4 Ultra, it will be a M5 Ultra so it makes no sense to compare the M4 Max to the M3 Ultra to estimate the difference between the M5 Max to the next Ultra chip. Knowing this, it only makes sense to compare the M3 Max to the M3 Ultra.
