So a fan can is useful. Imagine you are working on hard task on the Mac, then it will get hotter. On the MacBook Air the performances will be limited to prevent an overhead of components but on the MacBook Pro… the chip will not limit his performances since the fan will prevent the overhead.

Anyways I let you with your preferences…

100%.

It can also have drawbacks too in terms of sound, and dust/diry entry. Nothing is free :D
I was tossing up between a MBA M4 and a refurbished MBP M4. I really wouldn't use the extra power of the Pro on a regular basis, but I can see the benefits of no fan.

It's nice that we have a choice though. The MBP is a great machine.

I will also miss $600 if I buy the Pro for many features I don't need.
MacBook Pro is a premium device. Most of people might not need what it has but it can be pleasant to have it…

By the way it’s not 600$ but 400$ since we need to compare to the MacBook Air with 512gb.

It is rather strange to see so many MBP users always trying to discourage people from buying the MBA. I just don't understand the mindset of trying to push someone away from what they want to something they don't really want all for the sake of features that they weren't concerned about not having in the first place. Why can't MBP users be content in the fact that regardless of price, many users what the MBA and it doesn't matter whether or not the MBP understand the reason(s) why. Let people be happy with having something different than the MR beehive mentality.

That’s why I said the mbp is more a premium device which people might not need it but it’s pleasing to have it… If you go with the air it’s ok. 👌

I don’t get this either.

I’m trying to see if I need a Pro. I go on the web (building and maintaining my website), MS office stuff, movies, music, and I think that’s it.

But if I only need 256gb it would be $600 more to enter the pro market than the air market.
If you are ok with 256gb you might go with the M4 air since you are not doing hard task so you might not need a fan, more storage or even more battery (since yeah if you use like Final Cut Pro it won’t last 18h on the air for sure so you might miss some battery and then the 6 extra hours on the pro (who might be maybe an hour or two of FCP usage for example) might be useful… So the only real benefits would be the screen and the speakers I guess…

Go pick the air…

The question you should ask you instead is : Do I want a better experience… everything the MacBook Pro has is pleasant but might not be needed…

ok

You might go to the Apple Store and see them by yourself and then pick whatever you want…
I use 2 external monitors now, so the screen I don’t care about. As much as I been carrying it lately, the Air will be nice. I can run Excel and other Office programs now without an issue, so this Air will be fine.

I don't need any of that. I almost don't even need a new computer at all, I could just use my iPad. I wager it's getting more and more likely the Macbook Air M4 might be my last laptop and I'll go 100% iPad.

When I was buying my M1 MBP 14" a couple of years ago, I went back and forth between that and the redesigned M2 Air. I really wanted the Air for a few reasons.

1. For some reason typing on the Air seemed "better" to me than the MBP. It was my understanding the MBP and Air were supposed to have the same keyboard, but it didn't feel that way to me. I was just able to type "better" on the Air.
2. It was light, and thin, and i could definitely tell the difference when compared to the MBP. The specifications don't make it seem that way though.
3. I didn't actually need the power/capabilities of the MBP, as I had a more powerful desktop for my main work, so I was really only needing a laptop was for typical travel activities.

That said, there were 2 reasons I went for the MBP.

1. I just couldn't find an Air that didn't have some strange issue with the screen. The three examples I was able to look at at MicroCenter each had some strange shadow in the screen. I was able to find some forum posts of others also having the same issue. I guess if I kept searching I would have found one that was perfect.
2. More importantly, I was able to get the base M1 MBP for $1599, while the same configured M2 Air was basically the same price at $1499 (8Gb/256GB for 1099, and another $400 for the same memory/ssd).

The additional benefits of the MBP were definitely worth the $100. (mini-led screen, great speakers, additional ports.)

I think if they had released an Air model a couple of years ago that had 16GB memory / 512Gb storage and a issue free screen for $1199, then I would have definitely gone for that over the $1599 MBP.

Had M1 Air base and got no issues. But bought into the hype of MBP 14 and got one for 1600.

I have ran 2 jobs so 2 laptops was a necessity, and MBP served me well to drive 3 screens on my main job - something M4 air can do only now and M1 air could not dreamed of.

MBP14 was a solely get the job done machine - all leisure time spent on Air. After the second job ended, I don't use MBP 14 at all.

Why is that? I’m tempted to get the Air, but I’m not 100% sure. I honestly don’t need a Pro, but why wouldn’t you use the better screen?

Probably depends on my current lifestyle. Back in the day i was a high schooler or bachelor, and my laptop or PC stayed at the same spot for years, needing to move only once in a blue moon. My 10 lbs windows laptop sounded like a no big deal.

Running 2 jobs required me to whip out my laptop during the work time - Air is the easiest device to not pull attention. Also i have only couple inches of work space in cafeteria or quiet rooms, so MBP 14 would not fit as is with the economy airline trays. As i grew older, i have more money to stay active - this includes camping and climbing to the top of the hill to get some cell reception and get my job done. I think i am a fan of ultimate stealth and less weight.

MBP 14 - doesn't add a meaningful screen estate, it is bigger but not life changing. 17.3" Windows matte screens are life changing but 13.3 to 14.1 is not it.
MBP 14 overheats simply browsing if i put it on a sofa or bed - sometimes i like to work from there. I also have to baby it since it is a $1600 machine that has active vents that suck up all the dirt and grime from air (akin to my air purifier).
MBP 14 is heavy and not so easy to move it while open with 1 hand. It is not easy to pack and unpack from the backpack. It has a bigger footprint. It is not easy to pick up from a desk.
MBP works only 10 hrs from battery (12hr at most if using all the savings to cut yourself short) but my Air was driving 2K screen and worked for 15-16hrs constantly 100-0% when new.
MBP 14 cuts into wrists with elevated edge and typing is wrist wrecking.

Now the pros.

MBP clearly has a better screen - but it is questionable. For example 144hz of Windows laptop made me hate M1 Air's old screen because 144hz is so fast and always on. 120hz of MBP is variable refresh rate - if you scroll non-stop in Safari, it will ramp up from 60hz to 90hz then 120hz. Most of the time it hangs around 60-90hz anyways, and even 120hz is so short lived that I simply don't see a difference between this and Air.

Quality - cinema and such are much better. Simply better saturation, color and all but you don't really notice it shifting between laptops unless doing side-by-side.

Speakers - night and day better. But the days of cranking the music and movies are long gone with kids, and other people could say there are TVs to do the same.

Power - it is really 2-4 times more powerful. The question is I don't tap into that much power to feel the limits. For example if you have 2 4K screens, then MBP will be much more fluid experience - but I don't drive externals anymore - the sweet spot for Air is 1 2K screen or 1 4K screen(for M4 Air, because M1 Air with 4K is way behind of MBP with the same setup).

As a result if you need all that power and goodies but sacrifice on handling, then you have to stick to MBP 14 - like I needed 3 screens to drive for work and Air was not an option. But if you don't have such hard requirements, and if you don't tap into the Air power limits, there is less reasons to get MBP.

Fixed that for you.

you made your point countless of times by now, and it’s obvious that MBP is a better machine for you! It's time to let go and find a new hobby.

I would much prefer a Mac that didn’t overheat. A heavy truck needs more tires to support the weight, but not every automobile has to be heavy… and not everyone needs a truck. While the MBP may be good for you, it’s not a need for everyone. Your post makes it seem like you are trying to convince people to not get a perfectly good device, but for what? What is your end goal? If people know they need performance, they know a low end model won’t work for them. So again, what’s the purpose of the thread?

I feel like the M4 Air is more compelling than the base Pro if portability, silence and coolness are qualities you value.
I wouldn't for the life of me turn back to a computer with fans that runs hot churning heavy (/jk) 4-page windows Word files. I'd have to see the clear sky color firsthand.

I had wished for a Lilac one, and it comes close.

I weighed up the new Air (15” 24GB Ram/1TB Storage) and it came to £1799 (UK) but I could get a 14” MBP M4 Pro 24GB/1TB in the refurb store for £2039 so I bought that instead. If I find the screen too small then I’ll return it and buy the Air. I’m coming from a 16” windows laptop so I’m just not sure. The Air would have been good enough for me but for the extra £239 I get a better screen, speakers, M4 chip and more ports.

Regarding m4 mb pro, I read a lot of posts online how the fans ramp up on these more than previous gens. Here is one example. This would steer me more towards the Air as I really have a dislike of fans running. I'm fine if the air gets a little warm, but if I don't need the power of the pro, I'd prefer to not hear fans all the time.

The purpose of this thread is to let people know the difference between both of them then they can choose whatever they want !

So first of all if you hear the fans it’s because you are running very hard tasks. While you are running them on the MacBook Air it won’t be just a little warm but can be HOT ! 🥵

If you are not running hard tasks like that then the MacBook Air might be better for you!

Yup the MacBook Pro is very pleasant to have in your case for example I wouldn’t want to have adapters with me or even an external battery! + this might cost me around the same price if I pick 512gb which some people MIGHT NEED.
