Yup the MacBook Pro is very pleasant to have in your case for example I wouldn’t want to have adapters with me or even an external battery! + this might cost me around the same price if I pick 512gb which some people MIGHT NEED.

Interesting you don't want to carry adapters or external battery but you have no problem carrying an external HD…

I went from a M1 Air to my current M4 Pro; my observations:

  • Don't want or like space black, on computers or phones.
  • Don't care about cores. I can't tell any difference, whatsoever, in day-to-day usage.
  • Screen is better, but not enough to matter.
  • 14 vs 13 screen. Nice, but not a big deal.
  • I don't buy base storage regardless of the model. Minimum 1tb.
  • HDMI was already available with a multi-port dock, which I still carry.
  • Same for the SD card slot.
  • Battery is fine on both.
What I do miss is the wedge shape, the lighter weight, the lack of a fan, and lack of fan grates on the sides. I kind of wish I had waited for the M4 Air, but I wanted to get my upgrades in before tariffs.

The only thing I really like is having a usb-c port on both sides.
Can confirm this to my exact thoughts, however, I still have and use my M1 MBA every day. My M3 Pro MBP sits at home. Why? The difference in display doesn't matter enough day-to-day for my work flow, the increased speed is not felt for the apps I use. The thing I do appreciate on my M3 Pro MBP is the USB-C ports on both sides and that's it. Why I still use my M1 MBA is the weight, the size, the battery life is still amazing, the speed is still amazing, and every thing else works just fine. Very seriously considering upgrading to the M4 MBA or likely wait for an M5 MBA which will probably get a slight redesign and even thinner footprint.

Are you actually using you foot 🦶 with Touch ID??? 😅

Many pros and cons and nobody should think there is a 'right' answer.
One other thing to weight that nobody has mentioned.
Many people report - and I def find - the air keyboards have a much nicer feel. It's strange I know, but true.

I've heard this too.

Adapters and extra cables usbc to hdmi are a thing - when I last priced it was pushing 16/512 air to the base m1 pro level hence i sticked with base m1 pro which has 16/512 by default.

For me weight and size play a big factor in my daily needs.

I had a 2019 13" Intel MBP which was a great form factor I preferred.

When it came time to upgrade a few months ago I was looking at a deeply discounted 13" M3 Air or the new 14" M4 MBP. I chose the Pro for obvious reasons and a decent discount at the time of release. ($200 off)

Now after 3 months with the machine... I sort of wish I bought the Air instead. The Pro is just slightly too large and heavy still for my daily needs and I find myself reaching for it less and less. Don't get me wrong it's an incredible machine but I'm not really a power user and I'd trade the extra "Pro" features for the more portable design of the Air.

However, that's just my two cents. I might trade this M4 MBP for a 2026 M5 Air if it's appealing enough then.

Though 3 TB ports is a pretty generous amount, as a trade-off of offering convince in many cases via the HDMI port that still is in high use.

I think you're overlooking the convenience factor of USB-A connections though. Not everyone needs bandwidth for the many things they connect with the many USB-A cables they have. Just like 1 HDMI port amongst 3 USB-C/TB ports an argument can be made for one USB-A port amongst 2 or 3 USB-C ports. 5 years ago the convenience factor was MUCH higher than it is now I think. With the passage of time and upgrading of hardware/peripherals, USB-A is over the 50% point of 'jumping the shark' like I said before. HDMI however is not there yet.
We will have to agree to disagree about "3 TB ports is a pretty generous amount." I say no, it is not. Three TB ports is too few for a top-of-the-line MBP. My 2016 MBP has 4 TB ports and I used all 4 when I used it in desktop mode; the added HDMI port is the only thing that helps my M2 MBP with 3 TB ports work well for me (also I am now mostly driving two external 4K displays instead of three).

The M4 Air also cannot drive 8k displays. I was a bit surprised at this, since the M4 mini can do it.

MacBook Air M4 is a good computer but compared to the MacBook Pro, you will miss all of this :

- Space Black (you have Midnight on the air)

- 14.2 inch display (against 13.6 on the base model)

- 10 cores gpu (against 8, like the cpu, a 10 cores gpu model is available!)

- 24h of battery (against probably 18 !!)

- 512gb of base storage (against 256gb)

- Better screen image quality (mini-LED/
Liquid Retina XDR display)

- More nits (Up to 1000/1600 against maybe 500 !!)

- ProMotion technology for adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz

- High-fidelity six-speaker sound system (against Four-speaker sound system)

- HDMI port

- SDXC card slot

- An extra thunderbolt PORT !!

- A fan

- A nano texture option

Do you need all of this, maybe not but if you are searching for a 512gb model, this is a good deal for you since the screen will be much better !

EDITED AFTER MBA M4 RELEASE!!

Don’t worth so much money except you need a pro look

Yeah man, not everyone has the same priorities as you, if you hadn't noticed.

- Don't want the space black at all
- Don't care about the number of cores, as frankly even my M1 Air is fast enough for what I do
- Can very much make do with "only" 20h battery life (lol)
- Am willing to upgrade to 512 GB storage on the Air
- Don't really need all that display tech to work with primarily text and a few images
- Don't care about ProMotion really
- the speakers on the Air are more than sufficient, and I'm also using AirPods if I need quality sound
- Absolutely zero need for HDMI
- Very rarely use an SD card

Soooo, I'm missing out on very little, it turns out. The displays on the Pros are very pretty, but it's not a burning need for me, and certainly not worth all the added weight and expense that come with even the 14" Pro.
I want a laptop I can mostly forget is in my bag, and the Pro isn't it. The other "drawbacks" are not a factor.

Laptop is mainly for travel, the weight is more important than what pro offers and basically double the price of air.

The only bad aspect of Macbooks is that Apple won't give them 5G connectivity.
A touchscreen would also be nice.

That's why the iPad sucks. It makes the Macbook worse than it could be, but the iPad fad was a fad.

A fad? Have you walked into a classroom these days? Every single kid has a tablet of some sort. The base model iPad is in the hands of every kid grade K-12.

Do you mean the fad of replacing a MacBook with an iPad?

I mean that a touchscreen would enhance the Macbook experience, and they've toyed with the idea with the touchbar in the past. They couldn't well compete with their own iPad.

Same goes with 5G connectivity. It's so useful and desireable, so obvious, that they leave it to their customers to buy not one but two products in order to enjoy it on the Mac.

While it makes little sense for a product like the Watch to have 4G or 5G, since it is tethered to the iPhone anyway, 5G would be a killer feature on a Macbook. Or equally as useless as on an iPad.

Both 100% useless for me. I have a touchscreen laptop already and it’s just a dumb inconsistency between built in screen and external monitor at best, and at worst an actual annoyance if I use it by accident.

5G would be an equally useless feature adding unnecessary cost.

…For me of course. I’m glad Apple hasn’t added those.

I've been seeing a lot of people discouraging people from buy MBA. I think most of them are just trying to justify themselves for the purchase of MBP, even though they don't need it. Yes, MBP is a great premium device, as stated in this thread, has better specs for some people. It is a deal break not having Pro Motion screen, fan, HDMI and SD, MBP is definitely a better choice for video editors, 3d editors, etc.., But, MBA is a great device too, and it is cheaper than before and it still has a premium touch, is lighter and quiet, for most people is more than enough, why would I spend more money? For people like me that works as developer is more than enough.

Yup MacBook Air still a great device… I am just sad that it didn’t had many features + also it got a reduction of 100$ usd while in Canada it’s a 50 CAD reduction (so around 35 usd)

Yes, the only thing for me would be the screen. But given the similar specs and price point I could get, would be almost 300euros difference

Once that was pointed out, that's what I see. I went from a 2008 Aluminum Macbook to a 2020 MBP, and I getting my 1st Air and I am pretty exited about it.

Depends on the area. Every school in my county, and the neighboring counties, use ChromeBooks.
