Interesting and curious.

As I understand it 'tap to click' means the physical click is replaced by the tap, and presumably tap to click is silent on the Pro?

This is the first setting I turn on for all laptops.

So are you wanting to have a silent physical click which is not available on the Pro? I didn't know such a setting existed. I have sold my 12" MacBook waiting for my Air so can't check anything.
Exactly. I have both the 2020 M1 Air and Pro side by side. Even with the settings exactly the same, the Pro trackpad is very loud and clicky sounding. I dont use tap to click.

I guess Apple replaced silent clicking in the Pro only since the Air has it. I just sold my 2015 MBP that also had silent clicking option.

"Silent click" disables the ADDITIONAL sound feedback of clicking.

You can still hear your click with it on, it just doesn't ALSO make a sound.

I never noticed this feature on MacBooks. The Magic Trackpad 2 standalone has this option though. The non-silent click is just annoying.

This is with my iMac.

I am still torn between pro and air myself though. I have a 16/256 air on the way, but now thinking 16/512 air or 16/512 pro would have been better. Though this is just my side machine, my 2020 iMac is my main work machine...

Mostly annoyed about peak brightness. I've always enjoyed the 500 nit display on Macs.

My plan and justification for going MBA.. (not that you care), but here it is.. Getting the MBA for now, because I know when the MBP 16 M1 comes out, I'll almost certainly upgrade.. So it doesn't make sense to spend the extra $300 on the 13" MBP over the Air for now..
I am probably going for MBP 512GB and 16GB Ram, almost for the opposite justification. My needs are not super high (medium video/photo editing) and normal stuff (Skype,Zoom, YT..) and I don't want to upgrade every 3-4 years. I want my system to be reliable at least for 5-7 years, so I think might spend the $ extra now....

After having about a day to use it I do have to say that I really like it (M1 Pro) overall Ive really wanted a 16 for a long time because I have had the 2015 15 since it came out and love the big screen but knowing that this machine can out do a current 16 and is half the price of what I want is definitely making me think twice about it. Can saving $2000 and having a machine that can outdo/keep up with the one I want make up for the screen real estate???

I went with the Pro (512GB) since I want the best battery possible, but honestly if it wasn't because of that the Air (512GB) would be perfect, not to say the Air battery is bad (it isn't) just for my workload and processes I want the best possible battery.

I'm amazed of the level of performance from the M1, I've already worked this thing HARD and the fan did not turn on at all with the case getting a little warm. I was on teams meetings all day yesterday, started the day at 100%, finished the day at 70%, that was with teams and application processing and conversions.

I just wish that Apple could have stuck a better webcam in this thing.. oh well.

anyone know why my pro won't let me turn the battery percent on in the status bar?
You're following the procedure for Big Sur below, yes?

I'm curious about this, too. My guess is that it's only a factor if used outdoors in bright ambient lighting.

Unfortunately, comparing my new 13-inch Pro to my 16-inch Pro's display, I can easily notice a 50-100 nit brightness difference. Not sure about it compared to the air yet.

Could you please either just tell me your perception or (if you have a ton of free time) record a video that shows the differences between the speakers? I haven’t seen or read any good accounts.

Oh I see how to install iOS apps. I can't find all the apps I want but I did get a few of the ones I really wanted and they just work. This is SO COOL. I'm now officially SUPER HAPPY.

My understanding is the iOS app developer has to mark their app(s) as available for M1 systems.

John Gruber's conclusion was that the fan aka "active cooling system" on the Pro is essentially inaudible.

Well them I am going to start writing letters telling them how I just subscribed to their competition because THOSE apps are available.

Anyone know if DropBox is M1 native or maybe I should just switch to ONLY iCloud. I have a 2 TB account anyway.

To be fair, some of them are doing it because they have no idea how their apps will run on these systems.

Easier to deal with a complaint it's not available than a complaint about something not working correctly. The DTK I imagine probably only told a little of how it works. Once they start getting shipping laptops there will likely be more.

Depends what you want to do. Afaik DropBox can be used also as a online back up service, whereas iCloud is a simple (and quite dumb imho) sync service..

I'm currently torn. I don't generally need sustained high throughput and hate noise.

But for the spec I want (16GB/1TB) its not much more for the Pro.

But here's the rub: I KNOW the Air won't have any fan noise ever, because it has no fan. Just not sure how much it throttles, when it eventually does. If its still say 50% of max speed, it will be much faster than this early 2020 air even then (and dead silent) so...

^^^ Is the touch bar a consideration for you? The air's biggest detractors were poor performance and self incineration, both of which seem to be fixed.

There are some Youtube videos out there and it looks like it takes quite a bit before any throttling happens. They weight about the same so I went with the MBP. Mainly for the "just in case" scenario at some point in the future my workload demand increase. My fan hasn't kicked on since I got the machine.
