I’ve been looking forward to the generic unboxing videos from the usual biased YouTubers all week, thanks MacRumours for posting them.

I was super curious what "iJustine" thought
Turns out she likes it

I'm pretty surprised, especially with the "i" on her name

I really miss actual reviews, like the ones Anandtech used to do, after using the device for more than 10 minutes, including deep down analysis of the silicon, etc.

These are not more than brief hands-on if not pure superficial bullet-list cheerleaders running against the embargo timer.
At least they seem to be human. Soon to be replaced by AI influencers rolling out bullet points.
Or why not add some truth for once:
"Dear Apple customers,
We are thrilled to announce this yearly iteration of M3-based Macbook Air. As you know, M3 is about the same as M2, except it costs less to produce, which is all good for us, hence for you. Of course, we had to do the routine price bump. But we kept it reasonable, by our standards, except for Mike from RAM Management & Pricing who can't help being a jerk (Hey Mike!)
"

They always Skip in the charts lower pro M3 Pro chips. 11/14 and 12/18 cpu/gpus.
Lower end M3 pros always left out as they always go for the top M3 pro-MAX chip.
argh^%$%@^
Have no idea how it compares.
Most reviews do this.

If you are going to compare Air to Pro in charts M3 to M3Pro would be nice to see.
Showing the fastest Pro max with in the m3 lower end line is not fair comparison.
Everyone knows the top of the line performance is going to be better than the rest.

Maybe it’s just me, but the era of “content creation” has just worn on me. These reviews are all stretching to find something positive to say about a simple spec bump that has already been discussed ad nauseam with the MacBook Pros.

There are still some good old school sites doing them. Ars Technica, Tom’s Hardware, etc. Maybe not as deep on M3 but it’s also not a brand new chip anymore.

Must be real hard to review a spec bump, honestly

Two questions for my own amusement since you're very experienced in IT.

Just out of curiosity, why were you going with laptops when the workers are at desks?

And the second is more of an anecdote. I have had users with their own equipment plug in USB video adapters to drive far too many displays. I didn't have enough authority over this user to assign equipment, but they complained to me that it works but it's slow. I'm like yeah, it's not supposed to do that.

So my question is, have you ever tried just hooking up a USB video adapter and seeing how it works? Still crazy to me there's lots of unused USB bandwidth and I haven't heard of anyone trying it.
We went laptop and SSD only back in 2013. Keeps the workforce mobile, and laptops were powerful enough back then that anyone could get their work done on them. It made Covid a non-issue. Everyone already had a laptop. Developers had desktops up through about 2019, when we phased those out too.

We support two displays. Some intrepid users go farther, but only 30% of our users leverage dual displays, less than 1% do more than 2 displays, and on Fridays, less than 10% use more than one external display (almost everyone works from home that day)

Totally agree with you. Really can’t stand video reviews either.
I am not sure who watches these reviews to make a decision on a computer.
The only review that matters to me is the one I do when I buy one for testing. If it passes the review it is kept, otherwise straight back to Apple.

"Content creation" was an oxymoron right from the start considering they've always been walking, talking billboards paid to promote products - just the social media version of a TV or radio ad.

And just like TV or radio ads, few people actually pay attention to influencers overall (unless you're my mother in law, to whom everyone is welcome to sell a bridge to). It's a little sad marketing has been reduced to this (considering Apple's marketing has traditionally been pretty spot on).

Fortunately there's a handful out there who are somewhat interesting, but really just a handful.

I see them as just people with dubious qualifications trying to make a living pretending they know what they are actually talking about.

The M3 MacBook Air is everything to enterprise IT departments.

We have approximately 5000 Macs in our fleet. The fact that up to 70% of these Macs intended for non-developers and non-power users can now eventually be a $1200 M3 MacBook Air, instead of a $2000+ 14" MacBook Pro, is huge and keeps the Mac ecosystem more in line with our costs on our standard Dell Latitudes -- still more money upfront sure, but not "twice as much" money. And where the Dells last 3 years tops, we run the Macs for up to 5, lowering TCO below Windows.

Why did we go with Pros before? Dual displays is non-negotiable when there's 11,000 desks each with 2 displays to light up.

We ordered 400 of these already to refresh employees on rapidly aging Intel hardware.
I'm going to guess that these are extremely low quality external displays by today's standards that are all over these desks.

Ah, Geekbench. Useless numbers that don't really mean anything to anyone. As with the specs of most products they don't mean much until you get in the drivers' seat and get a feel for it. An export time of a 5 minute 4k clip from Final Cut or the time spent converting a 100k+ polygon mesh in Fusion into Brep would be more useful as a benchmark.
Geekbench numbers mean a lot to people who know to read them. They are also very useful as a consistent source of measure for older Macs.

And this is the problem. They chase after the clicks because they need the income, not because they have any specific knowledge or because they are paid by an employer to be honest about their thoughts. While we don’t need editorial control over everything on YouTube, it’s become very clear why a good “editor in chief” is so valuable for curation.

I haven't watched a lot of Mac related videos over the last decade but holy bananas the last few days of watching Mac youtube videos has been awful. So much clickbait ("MAKE SURE YOU DON'T MAKE THIS MISTAKE", "I RETURNED MY MAC HERE IS WHY!", "THE TRUTH ABOUT MACBOOKS - YOU'LL BE SHOCKED!", "DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS", etc).

I've been trying to find useful information but it's like wading through **** trying to find any useful information.

99% of what's on social media is brain-rotting tripe.

Even on this site which you'd think would be trustworthy. I remember the MacRumors review of the M1 iMac said the display wasn't as sharp as the Apple Pro Display XDR or LG Ultrafine. But that is impossible because they all have the same PPI.

Why bother with unboxing videos? Externally isn't it the exact same as the M2 Macbook, and the M1 MacBook before it?
Why not? I certainly have the time now that I have stopped subscribing to Netflix, Disney+ and TV+, while keeping my YouTube premium subscription. I can think of worse ways to spend 10 minutes here and there. :)

You called it, lots of Dell 1080p panels. Garbage compared to any Apple display... but sadly that's the reality we deal with every day in corporate IT.

Thank you, this helps.
SD slot on my MBP M1 is unreliable.

I do use the HDMI though. I find it more reliable with monitors than DP and I don’t have any monitors that support TB. I also use the HDMI on a thunderbolt dock to put netflix on a TV so I can watch Arrested Development or Bojack while I work.
