The only thing that I dont like about "Laptop" backpacks is that they are extremely square. I guess I could get a sleeve and put it in a normal backpack but that doesnt have a spot for the laptop

the recon has a padded spot for a laptop. but I got a sleeve anyway.

I also recommend getting a sleeve and placing it in a backpack you may already own. This would be the cheapest route.

Tom Bihn makes a sleeve that although costs more than your price point, it is a very strong sleeve. It also snaps in to several other products that Tom Bihn makes. So if you were to come across more money in the future you could easily upgrade for a more bulletproof system.

The sleeve is around $60. And is a lot tougher than neoprene.

This is what I use for school. Looks just like your everyday average Jansport backpack except it has a padded sleeve.

Jansport screams low quality/cheap. You can buy them at Target for $10. I would never trust my Mac in such a ugly, low quality product.

MacCase makes a good backpack. So does the other that were mentioned in this thread. I wish I could afford the one hogfaninga linked right now, but I will have to wait. That one gets rave reviews on this site and everywhere.

I had the original STM backpack and like their products a lot - laptop pouch is suspended from bottom, very comfortable to use. Now I use a Crumpler backpack (not sure of the model, looks like the Belly L) which I got as a present, it nice removable laptop compartment.

Is it really that bad of an idea to use a Jansport backpack? Whats wrong with saving money? I dont know about you but i put my mac in a sleeve then into my Jansport backpack to get from point A to point B not to go 4x4ing or kayaking so there is really no need for the ULTRA protection. Only way i could see that much padding to be needed is if you're the most clumsy person in the word or if you just like to waste your money.

I use a Gravis Metro. I didn't know it was a laptop backpack when I first got. There's a separate padded compartment for a laptop (up to 15") that's raised a little, so if you put the bag on the ground, the computer is still a few inches above, so it doesn't hit the ground or doesn't take water. Looks like a regular bag, a good looking one too. Supposedly costs as low as 60$ on the Internet. Got mine on sale.

That's the one I have. They changed it a bit since, from what I see on the Gravis website. The picture on the side is gone and the material and colors changed a bit.

EDIT : nothing wrong with the janesport one, if you keep it well padded and are careful. Sneaky to put an expensive laptop in it. Good for you for not as materialistic as this board.

Jansport is the K-Mart blue special piece of trash that only cheap people buy. Everyone knows Jansport isn't any good. Heck you can buy it for $10. If you are going to spend well over a $1000 on a laptop then an additional $40-50 or more to protect it is nothing. A sleeve will protect it only so much. A good backpack or messenger bag gives it extra protection that is needed if you actually use a laptop for what it is made to do. Travel. Not stay at home on a stand.

I thought this was common knowledge anyways. If that is all you can afford (which I doubt since you own a Mac) then fine. I like to protect my expensive things.

That's a load of crap.. Do you like jump off buildings and jump in front of buses? For normal everyday use, you're fine with any backpack/sleeve combination that offers a little bit of padding.. But to say that Jansport is crap is being simply ignorant. Jansport makes some good backpacks (although it makes cheap ones as well) that people get a lot out of...

I for one prefer backpacks over messenger bags because they are not as exposed, but to each his own...

Personally I would never buy a Jansport to tote around my Macbook. My perception of them is low quality. They might make some really nice ones, but I'm not going to buy another one to find out. I had one 4 years ago and it was awful. To each their own. I agree with MacJenn though. I think it is wise to spend the extra money and get a nice bag (be that messenger or backback--whatever you like) especially considering you spent a lot for the Mac.
