Jansport is the K-Mart blue special piece of trash that only cheap people buy. Everyone knows Jansport isn't any good. Heck you can buy it for $10. If you are going to spend well over a $1000 on a laptop then an additional $40-50 or more to protect it is nothing. A sleeve will protect it only so much. A good backpack or messenger bag gives it extra protection that is needed if you actually use a laptop for what it is made to do. Travel. Not stay at home on a stand.

I thought this was common knowledge anyways. If that is all you can afford (which I doubt since you own a Mac) then fine. I like to protect my expensive things.

Your reply really made me laugh but hey i understand you live the lifestyle which contains massive amounts of front flips, skydiving, free running, and football daily. What im saying is you dont need to spend a lot of money to travel with your laptop and yeah i take my laptop a lot of places with me but im not expecting to get hit by a car when i walk out my door (And if i was hit by a car i wouldnt worry about the laptop id worry about myself first). Its one thing to be cheap but its another to be smart with your money.

Each person has their own definition of what is spending wisely is. I think investing in a nice messenger bag/backpack and sleeve is money well spent. It is just plain dumb to list those things you did. That made me laugh. People ride their bikes, motorcycles, get pushed hard in subways/buses/street, and some people travel a lot which puts a lot of stress on a bag. Those are common things. That is when a quality bag comes in handy.

Touche. I ride my bike around (not arguing) and stuff but falling doesnt cross my mind (i just dont like to think about it) I didnt think about the major city life either so sorry. To finish this ill just say for a casual user who wont be in major ruff areas a Jansport and a sleeve will do the job..

And the things i listed were sarcasm for in my opinion a ultra padding isnt needed IMO.

My Thoughts

Ok, Ok, Ok

I just read all posts within this thread and figured i'd throw in my 3 cents.

First let me mention i've owned my Macbook for 2 years and for the first 2 months spend almost $200 buying different laptop backpacks until I finally found the most perfect one ever. I'll explain why it's the best ever owned.

Even though I don't consider taking the Macbook to a remote location on top of a mountain, it's great to know your precious Macbook (cause admit we do love our Macbooks) is safe and snug. So I went out looking for a backpack that could hold my Macbook safely, while wearing a backpack that doesn't scream geek or cheap. But most importantly, knowing i'd be carrying a computer on my back my top priority was feeling comfortable with a 5lb laptop on my back.

So I got the 1st generation InCase Sling Backpack. This thing is beautiful. It feels like I'm wearing nothing at all. Comfortable compartment for my Macbook while catering spots for pencils, my airport express which rode along w/ my Macbook, plus power adapter, along with school notebooks and etc. From a college student point of view it's only not great if you gotta carry a lot of fat textbooks. But...

This InCase backpack came with me to China and Chicago within the past year where I endured numerous intense thunderstorms in China. I'd fallen, the backpack was beaten half to death but the Macbook perfectly fine. I just cleaned the backpack after a while and it really looks brand new.

My friends argue why I haven't gotten a new backpack in years and I tell them it's does the best job any other can do. They don't disagree because the backpack looks just as new as when i first got it. In fact, I'm using it today as I head to my finals at my Uni.

Look it all comes down to choice but considering it looks good (I get compliments all the time, cause EVERYONE at my campus has a Jansport, especially girls) protects very well etc. etc. etc.

I honestly throw this backpack carelessly into my car on my way out in the morning and she protects so well cause she's padded well inside and she doesn't look fat on the outside. Anyways, I suggest you get it. Though they did come out with a 2nd gen to replace the 1st that I have. Essentially the same, maybe an extra pocket here or there but the material is different. Personally I don't like it since it's a different feel but overall a great backpack. I hear Incase also made a conventional style backpack that hold a laptop within it and though I don't like the normal backpacks everyone in the world has; this particular model is waterproof which is a big plus in this coming rainy season.

Iono, but i'm curious to know what you get. Believe me, once I got this one my backpack woes were 110% over.

Again, this is the 2nd Gen and as far as I know the only difference is the padding for your back, which i've tried at the Apple store and admit it's more comfortable than my 1st gen.

Another vote for the North Face Recon! Great bag, really liked the mesh pocket on the front for storing things. My puppy chewed through 2 of the main straps:( so I went with a North Face "Onsite" instead and I really like it. It's a little bigger and it has all the best parts of the Recon in a messenger form + a great pocket for your power brick.
