Great pic, I just need clarification. Is this a photo of the new led backlighted MBP and a MB, if so the screen looks awesome. When you see them side by side like that you realize how much more real estate you get with the 15", yet the 15" shouldn't be too cumbersome.
Yeah, it is the new LED backlit MBP, and the screen sure is awesome. FYI the screen on the MBP was set to about half the brightness, and I think that the MB used about the same, although the monitor was in power saving state. It looks kind of weak. But really, the MBP screen is great.

We talked about the subject of size yesterday and no, it's not that much bigger actually, and they weigh about the same, so I guess it's all down to what you prefer and how much money you got ;-)

I actually ordered the 15", 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB
160GB Serial ATA Drive@7200rpm on June 5th and still haven't seen it. There is no place to see the new MBP in my entire state, so I ordered on blind faith. After reading so many of the posts here and viewing so many pics here where the new screens look so yellowish, I have become so paranoid about them. Yours pics have given me hope and for that I thank you.

can you operate your MBP on an airplane flight?
I've asked this too, but haven't gotten an answer yet.

My guess is the answer is NO. I've taken my itty-bitty 3 pound Dell D420 (12.1") laptop with me on planes and there's barely room on the tray table for it. I really doubt that a MBP would fit. Actually, I wouldn't doubt if even the Macbook was a tight fit.

Even if you kept it in your lap, I'm not sure if the screen would push back far enough. It does on my laptop, but the Mac screens don't push back very far.

On a number of occasions, I watched movies on my 15.4 Vaio. It was tight, and for short flights I'd just prefer to pull out the ol' ipod but I have typed and watched movie on the Sony while in the air.

thanks BACKSTAGE for the info. why would apple post on there website the altitude specifications that they did? and did your laptop work fine? it just seemed kinda of weird to me that apple would say you cant operate the MBP when in flight??????

so im getting a MBP in the coming days and one question that i cant seem to find and answer to is: can you operate your MBP on an airplane flight?

i know the apple specifications on there website but im confused because most airplanes fly at those altitudes and i see people all the time opperating their MBP and MB's ???? thanks for the help

Well I can't speak for the MBP's, but I have traveled quite a bit with my MB in the last year and I can assure you that there is no issue using a MB on an airplane. Even on short 1hr flights between Toronto and DC, I had no problems working on my MB placed on the seat-back tray. I found both the Macbook and Ibook 12" to be fantastic travel companions.

thanks guys but im asking if its operable because of the elevation????? not if it will fit on the pull out :)

Well I don't think Apple would sell a MagSafe Airline Adapter if they didn't want people to use MacBooks on planes. :)

EDIT: Oh sorry, I thought this was a current thread :eek:

I used my 15" powerbook on quite a few flights and it worked fine and really didn't feel too tight on a plane in coach either... :) Worked like a charm. I can't see the mbp being any worse... unless intel chips are designed to blow up after 1000ft :)

wow, I didn't know the size difference was so little!

Jeez, it's so hard to choose...I keep changing my mind every day.
I need a laptop for internet /taking notes in school (something to COMPLEMENT my iMac). I love the design of the mbp and the performance/features compared to the macbook, but I'm worried it may be too big to bring around and fit on a small desk.

MacBook Pro
14.1 x 9.6 x 1 - 5.4 lbs.

MacBook
12.78 x 8.92 x 1.08 - 5.1 lbs.

Join the club! :)
Wow like an inch and half taller and only half an inch wider. I mean no offense but other than money constraints why would anyone buy the Macbook when you get a much bigger screen in almost the same size. If only they had a similar case I swear everyone would just get the MBP.

the macbook aside which MBP should i get? ether the 15" or 17"?
haha i cant decide!!!!

The max operating altitude has to do with the air pressure/temperature/condensation at a given altitude. At an external elevation of 10,000 feet, the air is going to be a lot cooler (and probably outside of the operating temperature of 50F); condensation will form easier, and condensation on a computer is very bad. However, in an airplane, the cabin is pressurized (thus the ear-popping) and climate controlled. Therefore, while you may actually be at 30-35,000 feet, the atmospheric conditions more closely resemble the conditions at or near ground level.

That's why I asked if he'd be using it out on the wing. ;)

for me, the money isn't a huge issue. I don't however need the video card, but I would love the extra screen real estate, the backlit keyboard, the aluminum case, sr, etc.

for me though, I would need it to take notes in class...I'm just afraid the footprint will be too large. I have a Dell INspiron 700m...how do you think the mbp compares to that in size? It's definitely much thinner but the 700m's footprint is way smaller. Or is it?

I think the 700m is 11.7 x 8.5 inches.

The MBP is 14.1 x 9.6

The MB is 12.78 x 8.92

thanks for the details, but it's hard to visualize on paper. I wish there would be comparison pics somewhere...or I'll have to just go down to the apple store and see. I was originally set on an ultraportable from lenovo, but I really love OS X.

Here, maybe this will help:

Blue = MBP
Red = MB
Green = 700m

MB/MBP for college

queshy, we are both in the same boat! Though I'd be coming from a 17" PowerBook, I'm really torn between the 2.16 GHz MacBook/2.2 GHz MacBook Pro. I really love the design and screen size of the MBP, but after using my mom's new MB for a week, I've become smitten by its portability and size. I'm going off to college this fall, and I need something light, portable, and durable to take to class everday for notes, etc.

From my personal experience with the aluminum PowerBook, I've noticed that it does seem a bit more fragile than the MB (scratches, and I am somehow convnced that the case "flexes"). Also, I'm begining to experience a case of "pitting" on my palmrest (mini black dots begin appearing because of human sweat), and I hope the new MBPs don't have this design flaw, because I intend to keep this new latop for the next four years.

The "new" look of the MB (coming from almost four years of using a PB) makes it feel more refreshing to use than a MBP, but I can't help but notice the more toy-ish look. I don't know; everytime I go to the Apple Store, or look at photos online, I also keep changing my mind. Right now, I have absolutely no idea what I will be getting. :mad:

macbooks are nice but....I would rather have my 15 inch powerbook than a macbook. I just don't like the size or the look, and mainly the feel of the keyboard. It is a beautiful machine though.
