I think the macbook might be okay in coach, but will take some skillful placement. The mbp will be hard, but I'm sure that if you use your lap and not the tray table, then it will work out.
Ahhh, now this is where I prefer a feature on my Dell laptop (a D420). The lid opens ALL THE WAY, so the entire laptop is completely flat. This makes it much easier to use in odd places (like on a plane, looking down at your lap; or standing up, looking down on a table) since it's easier to see the screen this way. The Mac laptops do not allow the screen to be pushed back all the way (I really wish they did!).

I'm not sure if any of the above made sense to anyone. It would be much easier to show you, rather than type it. :)

I hope this isn't considered OT, but I'm also wondering about the "real world" differences between the 1400 x 900 mode in the MBP and the 1200 x 800 mode in the MB.
Hmm, I see your point -- BUT... how much difference is there really between a 13.3" screen with 1200x800 resolution and a 15.4" screen with 1400x900 resolution?

In other words, doesn't the higher res of the MBP negate some of the difference created by the larger screen?

Yes, some pics would be nice, because I'm not sure I see this one. It is one of the shortcomings of an Apple laptop, but it does help keep the size minimal. Otherwise, larger hinges would be needed, and they would stick out like a sore thumb.

Even better than a picture, I found a video! :)

It's kind of a stupid video (it's not mine) but it perfectly demonstrates what I mean about pushing the lid all the down, flat. Unfortunately you won't see it until the end of the video -- sorry.

That works because his other laptop looks like it's a 12". Try doing that with a 15" laptop (I've tried, it's not as comfortable). Either way, you can't sit like that in a plane.

No, no... my point is not that you can sit that way (or any way). My point is that you can push the lid all the way down, flat... which can help you see the screen easier in certain cases -- like on a plane when the person in front of you reclines their seat back.

EDIT: I just checked the lid on my 15.4" laptop. It too pushes down all the way flat.

I'm tellin' ya, it's a Mac thing. I don't know why, but it is.

Even if the person in front of you reclines fully, I don't see how you can sit in such a way that a fully flattened screen would help. Seats in coach don't give you much space at all.

It is a Mac thing. My old HP laptop could do it, but it was also 9+lbs(15"):) I guess we can't have it all;)
