I had the same problem and I just got back my MacBook from the service center.
Is there anything we can do to make sure this doesn't happen again? I only use headphones so I almost never use the internal speakers.

I'm kinda disappointed since I only had the MacBook for a few weeks

I would be careful with this setup. One of the speaker got busted after I unplugged the headphones after waking from sleep. Started the metal screeching noise once I started playback from headphones to internal speakers.

If you can, avoid iina/vlc and scrubbing in playback. It could happened again from any sources, safari youtube etc.

"UPDATE"

Last night I got a mail saying my MacBook was ready and I could pick it up, even I dropped it the day before. They fixed it in one day! I'm just got back from the apple store and they replaced the whole top case including the battery and keyboard.

Normally it would cost 425 euros to fix this problem but thank god for apple's warranty.

Hope I don't have to bring it back anymore!!!
You may have too with all the keyboard hubub

Thing is, I had non of those installed when it happened. I wish there were some sort of logs which tracked the system processes when it woke up.

Suddenly my left speaker has blown out! I woke up my mac and wanted to listen to spotify but i noticed my left speaker had almost no sound. I checked it and it seems to be blown out suddenly? i got this macbook for like 2 months.

will apple warranty cover this hardware problem?

my 2017 15" has had the same problem, but the right is the one which is distorted, did it happen when there was a popping noise? it is especially present when hearing Someone speak. I am going to take it to the store tomorrow hopefully

Did it happen with a certain app like vlc or iina? Or youtube or Spotify? I highly recommend getting AppleCare if you don't because this has happened a few times already with mine. I got a new MacBook Pro replacement with a new serial number and the problem hasn't reoccured so far.

As I am writing this, my 15" MBP is getting fixed for the same issue.
Blown left speaker.
Happened during a youtube video. Loud plop, followed by distorted sound in the left side (I think there are two speakers in each side and the cause of the distortion is that one of them does not work anymore). From time to time it works again, but quickly goes back to non functioning. Will see what the result of the repair is.

When did you buy your MacBook Pro? I bought mine in June 2017 and had my speakers replaced three times. Then my keys stopped working so the genius specialist gave me a totally new MacBook Pro replacement in May 2018. No issues so far. Maybe the later batches for the MacBook Pro 15" 2017 have these issues resolved.

And yeah mine happened in iina and youtube in safari.

I got it in August 2017. This is the first replacement. Keyboard was mostly good, with a couple of keys (rather rarely) repeating (I know, this is a bad sign, but in my case, it started from the beginning, always happened rarely, and never really deteriorated, so it was easy to live with it).

I am a bit nervous about the repair actually, as I fear the new keyboard may have more issues than the one I had.
On the other hand, maybe I get a newer part and it works better. We will see. :)

This exact issue happened to me, I opened the lid to wake my 15” MacBook Pro 2017 from sleep. A burst of electric zapping came from the speaker. I knew it was busted. I’ve had this computer for less than two weeks.

I used the audio midi utility to test and the right side was obviously muffled and distorted. So I set up my Genius Bar appointment.

They confirmed the issue. And their offer to me was to send in for repairs 3-5 days. Even though I brought up that this issue happened within 14 days.

Considering just going back to my 2011 MacBook Pro which has almost never had an issue. Sitting outside of the Apple store feeling let down.

Update 07/2018
Everything was repaired and has been in working order. However, I now get that weird and random pop-ing sound that everyone has been mentioning.

Update 08/2018
The left speaker has just blown out. It was after removing the headphone from the headphone jack. In talks with Apple Support now. I caught some video of the popping sounds it was making. Hopefully this will be rectified. --- Took it to an authorized service provider who was very quick with turnaround and everything was covered by the warranty. It may be in my head, but the keyboard feels completely different, they did replace keyboard/battery/top case to complete the repair.

The left speaker on mine got blown out, as well, after waking the MBP from sleep (unplugged a headphone cable after it had gone to sleep). It has to be an audio driver issue, right? Hopefully it gets fixed in Mojave... because they probably will not be issuing a fix for this in High Sierra.

My right speaker got blown out due to unplugging while sleeping. Now already 2 weeks waiting in the repair shop (Apple Care) because there is simply no replacement part available (Holland). How bad is that! (angry)

BTW Whole topcase will be replaced, so maybe this will be a nice improvement anyway. Just miss it desperately for my work in the upcoming weeks.

Seems like we're in the same boat. Next Tuesday will mark two weeks for my MBP.
When I get it back, I will do a clean install and then migrate my User Account from a backup (just to make sure it was not some piece of software that caused the audio driver to crash).

I am typing this from a MacBook Pro 2014 that was restored using the same backup. This machine has no problems at all.

Let's hope this gets sorted out soon.

(I'm from Belgium, btw!)

We are passed the 2nd week and we are back at square one. The replacement part was defect, so they had to order a new one.

I have my MacBook Pro back since yesterday. They replaced the entire top-case (so new keyboard, battery, speakers, etc.). Can't find anything in Console.app... Unfortunately.

That's good news. What do you mean with "Can't find anything in the Console.app"? Console gone?

For me a new topcase is ordered as well.

I was looking for a reason as to why something had gone wrong with the audio. But I could not find anything related to that event.

It's a cheap quality speaker, it keeps on blowing, I got a paid replacement for $120 and it got blown in a few weeks, even without using them. Apple charge us Gold and deliver ****, I will never purchase any Apple product again

Any suggestion?

Yes, you will need to take it into an Apple Store or authorised service center to have it repaired. This shouldn’t be a problem if the Mac is still covered by the one-year warranty or AppleCare.
