How long do they take to fix the popping noise issue? Do they replace the lid or the screen? Or do they give you a new one with your data transferred? FYI I do have AppleCare too.

Sounds like 4 days is a reasonable expectation. Unless they can't fix it, you can bet they'll return the same machine to you. It's very rare that they would give a replacement unit.

Short version and question: Do you even use the computer or are just too absorbed in trying to find the source of a random click?

Long version:

It is ultimately a tool we have paid for. A click or a clack here and there will not disrupt the productivity we are supposed to achieve on the new machines, will it? I can't imagine getting worked up about a click and clack here and there. Plastic creaks, metal will also creak. A $10,000 car makes a thud noise when we close the doors. We don't hyperventilate about that noise, nor do we consider it troublesome. Why a random click on the MBP?

The sound is so distinct and loud that it always makes me flinch a little. Today I fired up a heavy graphics app on a stone cold Mac and it produced such a loud crackle that it woke up my daughter. I can make my peace with the ridiculously malfunctioning trackpad, an array of useless ports, but this is just too much to take for the $4K I paid.

Its the screen, actually the entire hinged top of the computer. I had mine replaced because of (luckily) a small glob of bad pixels and of course the click/pop sound since I bought it in Jan 2016. Problem solved, no more sounds. Mine too acted up the most under a load, i.e. hooking up the 5k monitor. Good luck.

My 2017 13" TB also makes this noise when opening the lid although not as loud. It sounds like a quiet mouse click.

For me it is unfortunately a big deal... A car makes a thud when you close the doors yes, but the doors don't continue to knock as you drive along... I use the laptop to record meetings to ensure accurate records are kept... The popping sound plays over the recording at times and some key discussion has been hard to listen to afterwards... If this was a budget machine I'd expect the build quality to be reduced, but when paying thousands of pounds it's not something that I would expect...

My 2017 MBP 13 does the click sound when opening the lid after being closed for a while, doesn't do it if open for a while so idk, I also have the speaker clicks from time to time when using it (happened like 30 seconds ago) and like 3 times in the last hour.
I have this laptop since like a month ago but didn't open it until 5 days ago, and makes those sounds since the first day.
It would make sense the click to be caused because of the laptop being cold, because after some time using it doesn't make it if trying to open the lid. And after all it's metal so...

I got my display replaced and that fixed the problem.

It seems the problem was with the new hinges in the 2016 model. You get a "stick-slip" phenomena in the hinge, where tensions builds up in one of the hinges and is then released leadings to the snappy sound.

I do not hink there is anything you can do on your own.

Thank this answe! unfortunately the warranty has expired....

Not to my knowledge. It is mainly a "cosmetic" problem, although it may be irritating.

I had AppleCare and got the display replaced at the same time as they switched the top case for keyboard problems. That was at the start of 2018. I assume Apple tweaked the tolerances of the hinges so the problem was only with the 2016 machines.

Is it true that it is only a cosmetic problem? I'm afraid it will cause problems in the future...
Is there an official response from Apple about this? Do you know where can I get more information?

I recently bought a second hand late 2016 MBP and it is almost new. And I was very happy with it until I found this problem. And since I don't have the original warranty there is nothing I can do about it but give it back... But if it is only a cosmetic problem I can live with it...
