I have a big update
[doublepost=1534432307][/doublepost]Spoke with apple and they said an update is gonna be made this week hopefully I said was it gonna be next months Mojave and they said hopefully it will be a high Sierra update as they have fixed the issue
This week? Meaning in weekend?

Would like to report I got a replacement unit and it’s completely free of the issue I experienced before.

Dude, stop confusing people when it has been confirmed to be a software bug. It just hasn’t manifest yet on your set up because it is intermittent and hard to evoke.
I wonder if the popping is part of the bug or not, I've had popping when I rapidly mute/unmute on my 15" Macbook

I think the popping is when audio circuit is woken from sleep, typically, as there's no point sending power to speakers when no audio.

not happening here when I lift the lid, it happens when I rapidly mute/unmute from touchbar, funny thing it doesn't happen on Mojave. but I've noticed on Mojave that on max volume the sound is low in volume{I mean it is louder on HS than on Mojave}

hi everyone,

I purchased my MB 15 a week ago and I've followed this thread for about the same time since the crackeling has come up as well on my unit. However, I can't seem to reproduce it on anything else than VLC while watching a movie, it did happen once on a youtube vide. Usually the issue pops up after 30min watching a movie on VLC with 2 issues, "crackeling" and "sound muting for half a second".

Given it's software I haven't gone for an exchange yet but I don't seem to read people facing the "sound muting for half a second" issue. Same issue or different?

I have another 6 days till the 14d exchange expires.

If its not really reproducible other then VLC, then it may very well be software related and replacing the laptop won't solve anything.

I haven't read every post, but aren't users reporting that the "crackling" happens under 44.1hz and not under 48hz?

If so, that sounds like a -software- problem.
Just speculation on my part and I could be completely wrong.

But not wrong on this:
Now we have.... "KrackleGate™" to content with ...! ;)

It was already described here and it's the same issue. I previously posted a video with VLC live logs.

now I am able to replicate the issue, to any one who think his device is bug free, just open garagband and you will notice your midi setup has been changed to 44,100, then play a music or video for approximately 15 minutes or less and your speakers will crackle for sure
[doublepost=1534607848][/doublepost]some audio applications like Garagband when they launched they change output MIDI to 44,1000, and even you can't set it back to 48,000 while these apps is open.
[doublepost=1534607885][/doublepost]when I received mine yesterday I immediately checked the audio MIDI setup and found the output default is 48,000, no issues till today it happened to me when my Mac under heavy load, I went back to the midi output and found it changed to 44,100 after opening garagband. I set it a gain to 48,000 and its fine now.

Obviously software bug !

hopefully apple to fix it as soon as possible

I don't mean to confuse anyone. All I can say is I had an issue (as did some others on this thread) where the audio would after some amount of time start skipping, distorting, crackling, and become pretty much unusable and a garbled mess. After weeks of troubleshooting with a support manager, and taking it into an Apple store for testing, they decided it was a hardware issue and replaced it. The new unit does not have these issues.

Perhaps there are multiple issues being reported in one thread, perhaps the "popping" when changing the volume or whatever is a different issue, perhaps it is not. Just reporting my experiences and the resolution as it may be helpful to others.

try launch GarageBand and you will notice midi setting changed from 48000 to 44100 and the problem will come back soon. change it back to 48000 and the issue will gone away
[doublepost=1534611910][/doublepost]update for the issue:
as I said before I discovered that GarageBand changing Midi settings to 44100, then I went to the garageband setting and there is a MIDI output setting inside, I change it to: use macbook pro speaker and system default setting. It worked and now GarageBand now longer changing system audio output and no crackling

I agree with that
but both the machines I've had with crackling issue...
the crackling would only start after around 40mins of youtube video...
so some maybe 15mins as yours was
others may be 3hrs...maybe why some think their machine does not share the issue...eventhough it might

when they did the crackling, could you check the MIDI setup was 44100??
Because I never experienced crackling with 48000 midi setup.

Just checking in on this thread after quite a long absence.

My new MacBook Pro (now 3+ weeks old) that hasn't had any crackling problems came set to 48,000 in Audio MIDI. My other Macs have always defaulted to 44,100. Not sure why this one is different.

sure,
when I received mine yesterday it was set to 48000 and it was fine, when I launched GarageBand 3 hours ago it did change the output to 44100 and immediately I experienced the issue. now set it back to 48000 and now playing music for almost 1 hour without any crackle

yes it was 44 100 always with problems

no problems until installing logic-which autos it at 44 100... changed it back to 48 000 with no issues since

exact same problem on both the 2018 MBP I have had now...
sticking with second one-think its a firmware issue as CreeptoLoser says

solved.

put it to 44 100 and you will probably have issues
GarageBand Logic Pro x etc reset the default from 48 000 to 44 100 and thats where the problems lie it seems

both mine also came 48 000 default...were fine
installed logic and had problems
reset to 48 000-no problems since

annoying for those working with audio

solved.
Waiting for apple to patch it

hope so man really hope so
but how long is this wait gonna be though...? for the patch...?

apple support said to many customers that there is a patch for this issue before Mojave .

apple support said to many customers that there is a patch for this issue before Mojave .

so they have definitely responded to this issue...good news...
seen one or two saying a fix is coming but seems to be going on since launch and still nothing
here where I live they know nothing at apple support
so been relying on this forum for info etc

Yay! I just the speaker crackling club this afternoon. Mine was dead silent, now today it decides it is going to make a wonderful crackling sound. Man I love these things. Is there a t-shirt? pin? hat? membership dues?

Oh well, this one is going back once the replacement due to BridgeOS Kernel Panics arrives on Monday, but I am losing faith that one will be problem free.

Change MIDI settings to 48
