Thanks for this thread - I currently have UP2715K connected to MacPro 2013 and considering a swap to M1 Mini.

Has anyone succeeded in using UP2715K with M1 Mini ?
If you can leave without putting display to sleep mode - then it will work just fine. Otherwise, it is a pure hassle. Sell dell and get LG instead IMO (that's what I've done)

I'd do it but need to be able to use the monitor with 2 sources switching between private Mac and work Windows desktop. Why on Earth does the LG have only one input ? Any solutions to this ? Are there any external Thunderbolt 3 switches available ?

I would like to make a faster version of my ioreg.pl script. Can someone send the result of this command (zip the plist file):
ioreg -alr -k "display-timing-info" > ioreg_M1_displaytimings.plist

No change in behavior for the Dell UP2715K on Big Sur 11.1. You still have to do the rotation trick to get it to see the proper 5k resolution. :(

Oh no - the early third party 5k's aren't working right on Big Sur?

Ugh - I have one in storage I was going to get out in a couple weeks..

I would but the problem with LG is that it only has one input and I am using the monitor with two computers (Mac for home, Windows for work). Are there any TB3 switches available which would allow switching between different inputs ?

I just posted the step-by-step process I used to get my Dell UP2715K working with my M1 MacBook Air. I imagine this would work just as well with an M1 MBP or mini. Here is the link:

https://goykhman.ca/gene/blog/2021/2021-01-30-dell-up2715k-on-m1.html
First of all I want to thank you very much!
I want to confirm that this approach works fine with my Mac Mini M1 and my DELL UP2715K (REV A01, May 2015) and I can use the full 5k resolution of the DELL monitor.

However, this only works as long as I also have another monitor attached to the Mac Mini via HDMI port. So theoretically I would even have a 5k + 2560x1440 dual monitor setup.
The HDMI monitor can also remain switched off or, as is the case with me, operate a 2nd computer on another port. As long as the 2nd monitor stays connected to the Mac Mini M1 HDMI port, everything works. The Dell is obviously only integrated into the system as a secondary display.
Since I only want to use the DELL UP2715K on the Mac Mini, I have synchronized both monitors in the System Preferences.

Unfortunately, booting only with the DELL UP2715K does not work because the monitor remains in sleep mode during the boot process.

Hello,

I have an older Macbook Pro and the UP2715K, which I can only use with 2k. :/

Now I want to upgrade to a M1 MacBook Air to really make use of the 5k resolution.

As of November 2021, are there still so many issues with M1 MacBooks and the UP2715k?

My initial thought was I just need to buy just "2x USB-C to Displayport" cables.

Now I've read I need to buy this expensive adapter:

Also, do I need a script/app in addition? Because you talk about some "rotation trick."

Thanks for any "UP2715K for Dummies" guide. :)

It shouldn't matter how the UP2715K is connected. Two Thunderbolt ports of the MBA or two ports of a Thunderbolt dock/hub/adapter.
That blog is online again.

Thanks for the reply. Thankfully Goykhman's Web site is now online and the only issue is the file and I don't need any special adapter with the new M1 MacBooks?

Adapters for M1 Macs and Intel Macs are the same. Don't get a Thunderbolt adapter that is not compatible with Macs.

I still use one of my M1 Macs with a Dell 5k, a TB3 to dual DisplayPort adapter should work fine (I've personally tried ones from startech and owc, but there was some very old ones from startech that only worked on Windows, so be careful of Mac compatibility if you're buying used as joevt noted). Following the directions in that blog post should get the Dell 5k working reliably at the correct resolution. I will note however, that you'll still likely have issues if you let your computer sleep in clamshell mode connected to the Dell 5k (at least I do with my Belkin dock, it won't wake the monitor up). I just don't let my computer sleep when it's connected to the Dell 5k. For my other computer I use an LG 5k monitor and the experience is drastically better - it "just works". The Dell 5k monitors are approaching 7 years old and were fairly niche to begin with, so I don't expect support to improve with apple silicon Macs going forward. :/

Seven years. A bit of a sideline, but I wonder why no one makes decent hi-res professional monitors these days. All I want is a 120 Hz Mini-LED 30...32" 5k+ display for $2000 or less. Is that too much to ask? ?

Apple's Pro Display XRD is nice but priced like it's made of pure silver. Plastic would be OK and it doesn't have to be 6k.

My 27" LG 5k is "ultra fine". Very sharp but not very black, not very fast and not very big. It was released many years ago without a clear upgrade path.

I could get a 32" 4k monitor but then that's the end of the HiDPI experience. I doubt that would be fun.

For secondary monitors, a pair of 4k 24" would be excellent DPI-wise and size-wise, but the last of those were manufactured many years ago, now out of stock. Somehow people don't seem to be able to make them anymore.

Yes, this is the issue I was alluding to. Are M1 Macs affected by this issue?
A fix for Intel Macs to allow the old Thunderbolt 3 devices to work is at https://github.com/rgov/Thunderbolt3Unblocker

I have a couple Thunderbolt 3 items that are affected. The old Startech adapter, and a AKiTiO Thunder3 Duo Pro. Applying the fix lets me use those items with my Mac mini 2018.

Hi, chz1976,
Could I ask you: To make Mac Mini M1 work with Dell UP2715K, are you using the Startech Thunderbolt 3 to Dual DisplayPort Adapter or you are using two Thunderbolt to displayport cables?
Thanks.

I believe either method should work.

Also, ever since macOS Monterey the Dell UP2715K is properly supported by default on apple silicon macs, you don't have to do any of the workarounds we discussed early on in this old thread.

Edit : I found out that using 1 display port cable did solve the split-screen issue and I get a full 5K Image using the first display port of the DELL, hurray! Screen flickering is also gone after 2 hours of use, the dell had to get used to the 5K apparently. Still random disappearing of the whole image that comes back after 3,4 seconds, let´s hope it will also resolve by itself with time.

----------------- original post.
Sorry to revive this thread but I have still a problem with the M1 Macbook Air and the Dell UP2715K running under Sonoma 14.4. I am connecting the m1 to a StarTech USB-C to Dual DisplayPort 1.4 Adapter with 2 Display Port 2.1 Cables and should get a 5K image but the picture is only appearing as a split-screen on the DELL and the possible resolutions are :
2560 x 2880
848 x 480 (by défaut)
800 x 600
1280 x 1440 (HiDPI)
800 x 600 (HiDPI)

Does anyone have faced this problem and could find a solution for this?
