It more or less doubles the battery life on my iBook... always has... :)

That's what gave me about 6.5 hrs batteylife when it was new...

Same here but I still don't think the MacBooks'll be all that brilliant or Stevie Wonder™ would have kicked up more of a fuss. Three hours is definitely pessimistic though.

I suppose we'll see in February. But I just read about the Lithium Polymer the new batteries are made of, so they might give some more promising results. And optimizing can really do a lot. If I turn my screen down, BT off, minimise the apps I have open, I can usually get a goot 4 hours. So hopefully shutting down a core to consume power is a possibility.

Yes, well I'm not expecting 6.5 hrs on the new MacBook Pros... ;)

Do we even know if that demo machine had reduced processor performance on battery power...? I would guess not, since they wouldn't want it too appear sluggish...

I was hoping they would show a front-on shot of the screen during the keynote, just so I could check out the battery monitor.

As some one pointed out once you remove the powercord, they generally switch to the low power mode automatically that usually does reduce the brightness slow the speed and other stuff ... i doubt battery life than can be claimed is close to 4 hrs at most. If it was 5 they would have mentioned it! I used an ibook and now own a 12" powerbook ... ihave never hit the magical 5 on PB and 6 on ibook ... it was never more than 4ish for the PB and close to 5ish for the ibook (when they were new that is!). Probably you guys should be there with intel and apple for "optimization"!!! They need all the help they can :D ;)

Yes, but that's just a setting in the Energy Saver pref pane. And I just speculate that they've actually set Processor performance to Highest also at Battery Power, since they, at least with all 'Books I've tried, seems to get a bit sluggish on Reduced... and you wouldn't want a demo machine to feel sluggish, even at battery power, when you've just bragged about it's speed, would you...? :)

Personally I'd be fine with three hours... I mostly need a laptop so that I can move it from one place to another, but most of the places have power outlets. After all, my powerbook now only has 1:30-2hrs battery life (I just unplugged it and it says 1:40), and, while it's annoying, I've generally managed to survive.

I am guessing the new MacBook Pro has about 4 to 4.5 hour battery life. Not great but not bad. If it's less than 4 hours with most power savings features active then I won't be buying one no matter how sweet these new notebooks are. I also was wondering if you can still swap batteries in sleep mode like the PowerBook G4? If one can't switch batteries without restarting then that's one more thing that would prevent me from buying one.

If the battery life in the MacBook is only about 4 hours or less that could explain why Apple decided to not use the Freescale 7448 G4 in the last PowerBook revision. A G4 7448 at 1.8-2.0Ghz would have probably produced a PowerBook that gave 6 hours plus battery life instead of the 5.5 hours for current PowerBook G4 and would have made the Macbook look even worse in battery performance.

3 hours is about what the current powerbook will estimate if you yank the cord out of it, so this certainly isn't any worse.

well I'd take 3 hours given the fact that I'm using a sager at the moment (I'm not even sure that I can get 15 minutes out of this thing).

While it was ommitted, it doesn't mean it's a negative thing.
Maybe it's a little less than 5 hrs?
As for only having 3:03 hrs, come on, we all know that this was likely to happen if the computer is running at full power, everything maxed and turned on.
I used to get about the same with my 15" PB when everything was on and screen brightness maxed out.
A little over 5hrs when dimming the screen with BT off.
We just have to really wait and see. No one knows for sure.
Don't start filling your head with negative stuff. The damn things still haven't been "released."

Depends, at 4.5 hours it's still more than most other laptops. If the new ones have 5.5 hours on reduced settings it's quite good actually.

Does anyone happen to know if the slower model will have longer battery life and/or run quieter?

Not at all. The problem with the powerbook G4 was that it was slow.
5 times faster, did you ignore that bit? If you're getting 5 times the performance with the same battery life, you should not complain.

5 times faster is best case. I think most apps will see a 2-3x performance gain if they're multi threaded. Single threaded apps will average out at around 50% performance gain. Some apps will even run slower. That's my guess, anyway.

hehe, *oh noes!*, only 2-3x, wahtever will we do???
:D :D
The speed increase is really so ridiculous, I am so excited. Considering that, as long as the battery life isn't actually, WORSE, I'm fine with it.

exactly my point.

i just got a fryer for XMASS and just used it last night. mmmm tempura chicken.

but yea for a laptop this IS innovative no doubt about it.

but common sense would tell you that some engineer had a fryer and would notice the idea.

I mean cmon, this is like a no brainer. When someone (check the poll thread) DID have their laptop go crashing to the floor because of a cord mishap, dont you think they would have thought of the idea just as a human being trying to solve a problem?
