To put it to the car example, why buy a car thats known to overheat and turn off on you when a less problematic 2007 model is right around the corner. Just because a car runs doesn't mean it will be a smooth ride.

You'd expect this perspective from Apple executives worrying about profits, but not from CONSUMERS. People are trying get the most bang for their buck and the best computer experience, but forums everywhere have mac owners trying to sell systems knowing full well that right around the corner is something better.

We're consumers and we should look out for each other, not Apples bottom line.

Not every computer is problematic. I haven't had a problem with mine so far...whos to say the meroms wont have problems as well? its the luck of the draw with Apple.

It is when the products are first released, but the longer they are in production the less problems seem to arise.

I understand that. But it seems people are waiting till the second merom is released and are going to go buy it. Mine is a week 28 no whine no moo nothing *smacks desk* touch wood

how would buying a 1 week build memron with high tendencies to have kinks and hardware/software errors better than saving a headache on a already awesome machine macbook/macbook pro with excess power to do whatever u want (as a student like me that is that will be using office apps most of the time and internet surfing)

It will most likely be the same laptop, just with a newer CPU chip. Assuming they don't make any other changes, it should be at least as reliable as the yonah machines already shipping.

I'd definitely wait before buying any of the yonah macs (anything but Mac Pro).

ur post is not directed to me....?!?!?

and another thing.. ill rather listen to my lil free nano while the "enthusiasts" are listening to apple's silence about the merom debut. and print too from my free printer lol

If the rumors are right then the next mbp will be released in the next week or two and so therefore we will be enjoying our lil free nano's and a machine that will last longer, not to mention we won't be paying to upgrade our chips to 64 bit once Leapard is released.

You wont have to upgrade your chips the 32 and 64 bit are backward compatible.

Ok so I'm pretty sure I'm gonna wait at least another few months to buy, and at that point I might just wait for leopard, mainly for Time Machine. I really don't NEED it right now so that's fine but I'm still looking for some advice on hard drive and RAM decisions. My desktop right now has 80 GB and it's pretty full so I'm thinking to uprgrading to the 100 GB. Then, I would get an external drive to back it up, but could I use it for storing anything else I don't have room for? As far as RAM goes, I'm not sure if I want to upgrade to 2 GB because it's so expensive, but I also want to avoid messing with my brand new laptop at all. I'll be using it mostly for basic applications, but possible final cut later on down the road. Thanks for the help.

apple doesnt lower prices to match technology changes, it increases specs. so the yonah you buy today FROM APPLE will cost you exactly the same as the meron you buy in 2 weeks.

is this true? i was only going to wait for the merom because i was hoping the current MBP would drop in price.

also does anyone know if the latest MBPs (like the ones you can order on the official Apple site) are still plagued with the "whining" and "overheating" problem??

thank you in advance

Well, for the most part its true. The merom chip costs roughly the same as the yonah so this move in particular shouldn't effect the prices at all at the apple store. BUT, you will be able to find better prices for older MBP's in other outlets. Amazon recently dropped the 1.83ghz MBP another hundred bucks and increased the rebate so now its $1699-200rebate=$1499 (no tax! free ship!). Thats a heck of a deal BUT apple stopped selling this speed for a while now so you may end up saving money but wasting alot of time with tech support and getting parts replaced.

Also, the heat/whine/moo issues seem to be addressed. But whether or not its resolved is relative. There are people here who will say over and over (and over) again how their system is fine and doesnt run hot. That doesnt really mean much because "not hot" to these guys is 60-70c while "not hot" to centrino users like me is 40c. So you need to take each opinion with a grain of salt.

BTW, im waiting to see what changes merom brings. I dont care about the speed/64bit increase but what i do care about is that they figure out a way to cool the machine more efficiently.

thanks for the response, so about how long should i wait? what is the speculated deadline by which Apple is supposed to reveal these new Merom MBPs.

They have to announce/release them pretty soon, all other PC vendors already have yesterday. My guess would be next Tuesday, but they may not announce them until the day they have enough to ship.

I don't think you understand what you are talking about. Yes, 64-bit applications will run on a 32-bit processor, but they will not run natively. Just because Apple has been talking about backwards compatibility does not mean that a 64-bit processor has no advantages.

I think you misunderstood what I meant. I never mentioned anything that there would be no advantages over 64 bit but having a 32 bit MB or MBP will not make it obsolete.
