Sorry, another "MacBook this or that" thread. Couldn’t find any UK specific info.

crucial.com/uk is selling 2x1GB for the MacBook at £223.24 ($419.63).

Just wondered if anyone has a cheaper UK retailer of RAM - I've been searching and I haven’t found anything that’s guaranteed to be reliable.

dabs.com has some Crucial RAM 2x1GB for £150 with all the necessary specs apart from its states its "240pin", and presumably this wouldn’t work in the MacBook because the Crucial advisor thing produces 200-pin RAM.

Any suggestions for funky retailers?

Cheers guys & gals :)

I bought a 1GB module from OrcaLogic for MBP and it's worked like a charm. Cost around £80 with next day delivery, £75 for free delivery, but I needed it quick. So, two would set you back £150, much more sensible eh? ;)

Orca memory for macbook

I bought some of this stuff from ebay....Link I did some research on the brand and I have seen a few people successfully using it in Intel Mac's so I thought I'd take the plunge, if my MacBook doesnt like it I'll just remove it and sell it on eBay again, If after a few weeks my MacBook likes it I'll probably order a second stick,

I am based in the UK and have often ordered my memory from OWC (www.macsales.com) in the States. They have always been fantastic and the shipping is superfast. The discount is pretty good compared to Crucial.com/uk which was become ridiculously priced. They sell the original Samsung memory and other memory which exceeds Apple's expectations that run flawlessly in the Intel Macs.

You do get charged Import Tax from HM Customs & Excise which works out to be about 20% IIRC but still a good saving for decent memory.

I recently bought 2 x 1GB sticks for my new incoming MacBook and it cost $254 w/Fedex Shipping (£135 Sterling) so I expect to pay around £155 in the end.

I'm interested in this also - shame we couldn't get a group buy together :)

It wouldn't make a difference in the tax rates, but it would do in the shipping although be it marginal.

Some eBay people ship undervalued items to save on tax and I have never had any problems with that but with RAM and something of this value, I prefer the piece of mind.

I wouldn’t mind buying from a USA shop if the saving was substantial but looking at lucab1982's example - It would make more sense to buy from OrcaLogic as suggested by mrkamputee as the end price is virtually the same.

If the RAM had faults too, it would be more hassle sending it back and just too generally time consuming.

Thanks for all these links though - Such a student, trying to save every last penny ;)

Crucial for me are as expensive as upgrading with Apple too.

That Omni ram link people are passing around where I worked out 2gb would cost me 130 Euro (85-90 Sterling) including shipping (assuming we dont get caught for customs)...

Only problem I'm worried about reliability of cheap ram....

I am a student too! :D OWC have a great reputation as a mac parts seller so am pretty reassured by them. Yes it would be more hassle to send the stuff back but I am willing to go with repuatation, I have been using them for over 5 years. I am quite particular about macbook memory due to the graphics using it as well, I have heard when graphics memory is shared it can be quite particular in what type of ram is in there.

bought my 1 gig ram from scan.co.uk, corsair value ram works great.
£60 inc vat with £7 next day delivery.
Apple want £200!!!!!!

Samsung RAM

(first post!)

Hi All,
I haven't ordered my macbook yet, but will be doing so within the next week. However, I wanted to have my RAM ready for when it arrives, so I can install it, and then be done with it. I as looking round on ebay and bought this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=9729415361&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MEWN:IT&rd=1

it says they are samsung 1GB chips, the ones apple use. Is this true? Also, I reckon 130 incl p+p is pretty cheap, especially if they are genuine samsung.
Can someone tell me if that was a good buy, or whether I should have it got from somewhere else? (just for peace of mind)
many thanks in advance.

Warning, we just stuck a 1gb from Omni in a new MacBook. Won't start up now.

I've used memory from OrcaLogic in 3 different Macs and never had a problem with any of them. All deliveries were speedy, too.

Cheers for the confirmation and peace of mind, I'll almost certainly be ordering another once I fit this one problem free....

ADATA seem like a decent brand I checked out there website and they seem like a reputable company so i'm sure its very good RAM.

Can I ask how long you have been using this RAM in your MBP and what kind of difference you experienced with the extra RAM?

Thanks,

SHadoW

Ok, turns out you really have to shove it in there hard. Not quite as easy as it sounded, but working ok now. :)

to be honest i only used it for about a week before i returned my MBP, they are sending me a replacement at the minute. it all worked absolutely fine. i took the ram that came with the machine out straight away (after a little 5 minute test of course) so i couldn't really comment on how much better it ran with 2gb.

i must say that this is a better bargain than what i got a few weeks ago though. i paid £39.99 from the same seller so he must have just dropped his price by £3.

Does buying RAM from non Apple company void your laptops warranty?

What about if you have AppleCare - that voided with non Apple RAM ???

Thanks

I believe the consensus is "no" unless the RAM you install is the cause of any future defects, then Apple would probably have "beef" with you...

(I'd be a good lawyer...)
