Hi all. My issues looks like they have already been addressed but unfortunately what appeared to be the fixes for others didn't work for me. After using the patcher on my early 2008 Macbook Pro 4,1 to get to High Sierra...

(1) My display is too dark and while it shows the brightness control appearing to work it actually has zero effect on the brightness.

(2) Also, suprisingly, my wifi card that was not supposed to work did work. ...for a while...

Shortly after it came up on HS it found two updates, one for Safari and another for iTunes device control. When it rebooted after applying those updates the wifi no longer worked - "No hardware found".

I've gone through this three times; once as an upgrade, once as a fresh install on the native file system and once using APFS.

Any ideas on how I can resolve these two issues?

Thanks in advance,

Howard

the Lin to the newest Mojave patcher is on the first page of this thread
Thanks Timothy, just checked the patcher dmg, which I saved from last weekend. It shows 1.3.3, while the latest on page 1 does indeed show 1.3.5.

This is probably getting into dumb (very dumb) question territory, but don't understand why then the Patch Updater.app in /Applications/Utilities in that latest volume, created from that Mojave Patcher 1.3.3.dmg shows v1.2.0. 🥰

As I said earlier, everything appears to be working well (apart from some issues I had to deal with after running the 2019-001, including a KP, which the usb installer from that 1.3.3 was able to resolve.) Do I really need to create a new usb patcher, and if so, what do I do with it to update the Patcher Updater.app? Or is there some direct route just to update the Patcher Updater.app itself?

It is always a good idea to have the latest macOS Mojave patcher just in case you run into issues you might try and delete the patch updater from your /Applications/Utilities folder then after you create a new patcher reboot into it and only install the patch updater from the post instal patches

To get WiFi working again, just connect to Ethernet, and use Patch Updater to re-install the Broadcom BCM4321 patch. As for backlight control, that should just work, not sure what your issue is there.

That's what I would assume, just intuitively. However, just to be on the safe side, I already created a new USB Installer just last weekend, from which I successfully installed Mojave on a small, new partition, only as a test -- not the HFS+ and APFS volumes on other partitions already in use. (Also used that new usb installer to deal with after effects of Sec Update2019, and to install latest Video Card patches on those 2 main volumes.)

That new test partition with a new 10.14.6 also shows the Patch Updater.app at v1.2.0. Not sure where to go from here.

Sorry, I thought you were referring to the installer. The patcher updater in utilities is indeed version 1.2.0 and is the newest available. It will autoupdate if necessary I guess. Had to install Mojave in an external disk to check because I'm using Catalina on all my machines

AT LEAST IT WORKED:
1.Started in the recovery mode via dosdude stick.
2.Unmounted Mojave disk.
3.Converted HFS+ Mojave partition to APFS.
4.Installed Mojave 10.14.6 (18G103) via dosdude stick again.
5.Restarted and postinstalled, (APFS patch and Recorvery Partition patch were greyed out)
6.Force Cache Rebuild.
7.Restart and voilà: No loss of data and able to to receive security uploads.

The only thing is, that I've lost my recovery partition.
Thank you all for the collaboration!😉

Thanks fellas. Both those things worked. The brightness slider app controls my brightness through the full range and reapplying the wifi patch has got built-in wifi working again. More miles out of this old beast!

Will it go all the way to Majave or is High Sierra as high as its gonna go?

Try running this script in the terminal and keep a copy of this script

BUT restarting again after passing this script, there is no recovery partition anymore.

I tried those 2 scripts, the "derflounder,thing" I can't handle.
No way.
Now I discovered that safe reboot is neither possible.
That's it.
My HDD doesn't stop working, system is slow and sturdy, it's not worth it for me now, maybe later.
Going back to start, backuping.

Aha, thanks, that's finally solved! Just created a new usb patcher from the 1.3.5 dmg. Same as before, installs v1.2.0. Chalk that one up to confusing (at least to me) terminology.

Another thing, while I'm at it, the directions say to use a 16GB flash drive. However, the installer only uses ~7.75GB. Think I saw that elsewhere in this very long thread. No problem, since I can always create a new partition on the unused space, but any explanation for this size, when data used is so much less?

I am afraid you can't. Installer USB end up with Mac OS extended format. The workaround is to create a dmg image of the installer, re-partition your 16GB USB and restore from your dmg installer image to a 8-9GB partition.

Above I see references to (3) different scripts that operate on the recovery partition. Are these all intended to do the same thing? A bit confused at this point. For an APFS installation of Mojave using dosdude's patcher, which is the appropriate one to use? Any of them?

Hmm, maybe time to give iPartition (now free) a workout.

Question remains: not a complaint, but wonder why 16GB is still the default recommendation?

8GB drives usually give you only 7.6GB useful space and nobody sells 10GB drives.
True, except in my case, thinking that data used would require near to 16GB, or at least considerably more than 8GB, I divided a 32GB drive into 2 equal, more or less, 16GB partitions. Anyway, nothing on the second partition, so can easily enough erase the entire drive and create a new 8 or 9GB, and restore. Or curious to see what iPartition, which I've never tried, can do in this case.

At first, thought that the 7+ used was some kind of error, so relieved to know that this is normal.

You also should consider a dosdude1's perspective: he receives a lot of questions. So by giving an instruction to use a 16GB drive he significantly reduces the amount of unnecessary(some might say outright dumb) questions. Indirect management of social situations. That's all there is to it really.

Most likely the half the usb drive is probably used as temporary swap space as its reading and writing from your usb to hdd/ssd you get all kinds of error just with a 8gb usb drive

I'm not sure but I think the formatted size of a 8GB pen is not enough to create the installer. Check the usb partition size after formatting
