Hi all, my Mac Pro 3.1 crash on sleep.
There is a know fix for this?

Thanks

I forgot to mention in my post that I do have a Bluetooth dongle. This one:
GMYLE BCM20702 Bluetooth 4.0 USB adapter

Do I need a different one? This is the one I used all throughout the CAT years.

The usb BT 4.0 dongle is good, then follow these steps:

- From Catalina Desktop, plug the BT 4.0 to any usb port, and check that it automatically starts blinking with the blue-led (without installing any additional driver)

- From Catalina Terminal copy/paste this: sudo mount -uw / ; killall Finder
and this: ioreg -l | grep "board-id"

then from Terminal you have to copy/paste in one line this:

sudo /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "Set:Mac-YOURBOARDIDNUMBERS:ContinuitySupport true" "/System/Library/Frameworks/IOBluetooth.framework/Versions/A/Resources/SystemParameters.plist"

After you enter those commands reboot, if you still don't have Continuity features, try from System Preferences iCloud prefpane to sign-out and sign-in again from the unsupported Catalina Mac.

edit: I made a script to automatically fix continuity on Catalina, attached here: catalinacontinuityfix.command.zip

edit2: To fix continuity with a third party usb bluetooth 4.0 dongle: Catalina IOBluetoothFamily pre-patched for usb Bluetooth 4.0 dongles

I would suspect the RT2870 driver as the culprit as they have had sleep issues in the past. Is the installed RT2870 driver explicitly certified as Catalina compatible?

I don't know, I made a fresh installation with dosdude tool.
How can I verify the driver version?

Thanks

About Catalina OTA updates using the @dosdude1 Sierra's swupatch.sh and @Czo's SUVMMFaker.dylib and @Pinarek method of whitelisting the OTA .dist file, I've tested them right now "OTA upgrading" from 10.15.0 to 10.15.1 (about 4,5 gb download) and from 10.15.1 to 10.15.2 beta 3 (about 3 gb download) and they worked without issues and without triggering any unwanted firmware updates.

- Download this script: Sierra's swupatch.sh for Catalina
- Open a Catalina Terminal and copy/paste this: sudo mount -uw / ; killall Finder
- drag the swupatch.sh onto the Terminal window and press enter

now you can even download an update from Terminal, but I'd advise to do that from Catalina Software Update prefpane

before OTA update download and install, I advise to put the Software Update settings in this way without selecting any automatic Catalina update (maybe leave checked only "Check for updates"):
Screenshot 2019-11-24 at 11.31.41.png

After the OTA update is detected, click the "Update Now" button and I advise to click "Not Now", because after the OTA is downloaded you need some extra-minutes to edit a simple text file
Screenshot 2019-11-24 at 11.24.19.png

After the OTA is downloaded go to this folder: /Library/Updates/XXX-XXXXX/

and edit this file XXX-XXXXX.languageID.dist (if it is locked, copy it temporary on Desktop to edit and then replace again the one there)

Now from Catalina Terminal get your board-id and model identifier:
ioreg -l | grep "board-id" ; sysctl -n hw.model

Opening with a Plain-text editor the OTA .dist file scrolling till the part showed in the example, add inside your board-id here:
Code:
function InstallationCheck(prefix) {
var boardIds = ['Mac-yourboardnumber','Mac-9AE82516C7C6B903', etc

remove 'MacExample7,1', your machine model here:
Code:
var nonSupportedModels = ['MacBookPro4,1','MacExample7,1', etc

save/close and replace this edited file with the one inside /Library/Updates/XXX-XXXXX/

Return to the Sofware Update prefpane, and click "Update Now" button.

After the update installation completes, if you have a Core2Duo you'll encounter a bootloop (due to the telemetry plugin), then simply hold alt-option key at power-on, boot with the USB Patcher, apply the post-install patches to the Catalina Volume, and you'll have a working OTA updated system.

Another useful part is that the OTA update will also auto-fix the APFS Recovery putting back the stock Catalina BaseSystem.dmg (CMD+R should work provided that you have -no_compat_check in nvram).

Hi,

I'm gonna try to upgrade a 13" Macbook Pro from early 2011 to Catalina.

The problem is that the L-SHIFT key is damaged and always on. On a daily basis, it is deactivated with Karabiner and I start the laptop with some random keys pressed to prevent a start in safe mode (Karabiner only works after start).

That prevents me from doing operations like booting on another drive (with the ALT key being cancelled by L-SHIFT) or even installing any upgrade that would require a few reboots.

That's why I'm planning to perform the upgrade by putting my SSD into another computer (a 13" Macbook Pro from 2010) and putting it back afterwards.

My questions are: Will there be any problem with that operation? Are there any differences between the way Catalina is patched for a MBP 2011 from MBP 2010? Is the installation also performing a firmware upgrade on any other component?

Has anyone done something similar?

Thanks in advance!

Why don´t you disconnect the internal keyboard and use an USB one?

I already had the issue with the beta 9.

I have now installed the SwitchResX app (Version 4.9.0), disabled SIP and changed the colors from 1 billion to millions, which has fixed the issue:

View attachment 865559

Currently, 3 people have reported the issue: @iMac-Oldschool probably has a AMD Radeon HD 2400 or 2600, @antony34 has a AMD Radeon HD 4670 and I have a AMD Radeon HD 4850.

3 persons could not reproduce the issue: You (@ASentientBot) have a GeForce 320M, @TimothyR734 has a GeForce 9400M and @vince22 has a metal-compatible video card.

So it's very obvious that the issue only occurs with metal-incompatible AMD video cards.

Maybe others who can reproduce the issue can say which video card they have.

Incidentally, videos that are double-clicked in the Photos app are played correctly (with 1 billion colors).

I noticed something else: If you look at the system info, on High Sierra (the last official macOS for my iMac) the „Framebuffer Depth" is "24-Bit Color (ARGB8888)" (= about 1.67 million colors or 8 bit per channel/sample) and with the Mojave and Catalina patch the „Framebuffer Depth" is "30-Bit Color (ARGB2101010)" (= about 1 billion colors or 10 bit per channel/sample).

Therefore, I think that the affected AMD video cards do not support 30-bit color (see also). Or what do you think? @ll

Maybe the above fix/workaround that @ASentientBot has suggested will help some users and developers.

Edit: Because the SwitchResX app is only free for 10 days, I looked for a permanently free alternative and found the ResXtreme app (Version 1.0.1 (6)), which also works well for me (you have to choose your resolution with 8 instead of 10 bit/sample).

I also have the same issue with Catalina, iMac11,1with radeon 4850.issue is definitely with the color depth. dropping it fixes the photo issue. Also I notice iMovies will only play the sound but, no preview of the video.

videos will play fine on photos, QuickTime, vlc or any video player for that matter but iMovies or Final Cut will not show you the preview (just a black preview window).

reinstall this version of iMovie and the newest release requires metal which our unsupported Macs don't have

Yes, that's a good idea! I haven't tried yet because disconnecting the keyboard is cumbersome but I might try that first. I have an official Apple USB keyboard from about the same time as the MacBook.

Isn’t the power button part of the keyboard on the macbooks without optical drive? (Not sure of the exact config of said laptop)

The two MacBook Pros I'm talking about have an optical drive and the power button is separated from the keyboard.

But apart from this method (which might very well be the best, you are right!), is there anything I need to understand regarding the patches? Are there specific to every model? To every graphic card, processor?

Bonus question: Is it possible to use the latest versions of Keynote and Pages after upgrading a 2011 MBP to Catalina? One of the only reasons to upgrade is that I want to be able to edit shared iCloud documents, which requires them.

anyone help? I cannot do any installation or upgrade right now. no matter which version...
I can only boot to Mojave in my external SSD.
Boot to Catalina patch USB, Mojave USB installation disk, Recovery partition all are in same situation.
Is it any problem with the EFI or Boot partition?
NVRAM reset, SIP enable, SMC reset all tried...

SIP needs to be disabled at all times

If Catalina that I can understand but even i put Mojave USB installation disk which 5,1 is support. I still cannot install. I can only restore the system from time machine. It will show the installation application is damaged

Tried all of those instructions, but still not working. I did upgrade it from Mojave, so not a clean install. I can do a clean install unless there is something else I can do.

Hope you downloaded latest version of Mojave from apple site. They have been revoking certain certificates of mac OS Installers. So download again and try. Also ensure SIP is disabled of your computer.
