I have a 2012 MacBook pro on catalina os, I’m trying to update using OCLP, but when I install the os I got the messsage error “the firmware update cannot be installed” what’s the problem ??
I now make the laptop go into recovery mode install catalina again do all the updates I’m gonna try again.
I see that problems come from third party ssd , but it shouldn’t have any problems as with the latest catalina firmware allows to do frinware update from third party ssd. I’m a little lost any help ??
I’m gonna try again one more time now with this firmware in the photo

I had same problem before when i installing macOS Ventura on a 2012 MacBook Pro. I just restarted the laptop, pressed Option key to bring up boot selector. Then choose the USB, instead of choose Install Ventura, choose your boot drive. The installation should continue.

U mean to select the usb drive ? Not the efi open core usb , just the usb ? , or when select the efi boot then select the hard drive and not install sequoia

Yes. In this stage of installation, when you reach to the boot selector, you will see hard drive icon and USB with EFI log. You need select USB that OpenCore reside, instead of choose Install macOS Ventura, you choose the the drive which the macOS installed on.

In my case, I would select MacintoshHD. Then the installation would continue.

So in your case you did choose the Catalina HD? To continue the installation ?

When I reach the boot screen,

I select the USB EFI with the OpenCore icon.
Then, I click on “Install macOS Sonoma,” and it starts loading.
Once it loads, it takes me back to the boot screen again. There, I select the OpenCore EFI icon once more, and then I choose my hard drive.
I did that, but it keeps booting back into Catalina.

Now I clicked on “Install macOS Sonoma,” and it took me to a black screen with the Apple logo and a loading bar that said it would take 30 minutes. After that, it rebooted and brought me back to the options “Install macOS Sonoma” and “macOS Sonoma Installer.” This time, I selected the installer, and now I’m back on the black screen with a loading bar, but it doesn’t indicate how much time it will take.

If I can’t make it work, I’ll try to take some pictures to give you a better idea of what’s happening. I’m pretty sure I’m doing everything correctly, but I’m not entirely confident.

To be clear, when I did my installation, I didn't have macOS Catalina installed, it was a blank drive. But this is what should happen with installation.

As per OCLP website:

If your Mac is looping back into the beginning of the setup after the first reboot, turn it off, start it again and hold Option. This time (after choosing EFI Boot first) select the option with a grey hard disk icon in the OpenCore picker. It can either say macOS Installer or the name you gave the disk during the installer process. Keep repeating this step after every reboot if necessary.

Install macOS Ventura will boot from your USB drive, macOS Installer will boot from your hard drive.

The macOS Sonoma Installer should bring back to the macOS recovery, which is the first stage of your installation.

Your MacBook will restarts few time, each time you will need to choose Install MacOS Sonoma, until the installation finishes.

If I can’t make it work, I’ll try to take some pictures to give you a better idea of what’s happening. I’m pretty sure I’m doing everything correctly, but I’m not entirely confident.

If you have the correctly created the OCLP installation USB, you should be able to install without issue.
