I was given the suggestion of keeping Monterey as my main install, and using OCLP externally until Monterey is out of support so I could continue to receive firmware updates. So that's what I've done, I've kept Monterey installed internally, and run Sonoma on an external drive. No issues to date.

@deeveedee, the link you reported isn't pertinent. It's related to colours distortion introduced in BigSur or Monterey (my memory sometime is a bit buggy) and solved by changing colour depth. At that times Photos didn't crash at all... :(

Anyway, there is a support request opened in Discord, if someone else is interested to contribute.

I changed the GPU in my iMac 2010 to metal card, Photos is working without any issues.

The only thing that changed was updating OCLP to v1.1.0

Should I revert back to OCLP v1.0.1? Or wait for the release of Sonoma v14.1?

MBP5,2 (Nvidia Tesla non-metal as well as USB 1.1):
- Photos was running fine with 14.0
- With 14.1 betas/RC the machine can't boot with OCLP 1.0.1 in EFI (USB 1.1)
- With 14.1 and 1.1.0 in EFI can boot. Photos fine without root patches. Photos crashes after root patches applied.
- With 14.1 (1.1.0 EFI) and root patched with 1.0.1 Photos fine but need external mouse/keyboard.
- Previous Photos from 14.0 can't run under 14.1 (both version 9, different subversions).
Now looking closer to see which part of PSP 1.4.2 (was 1.4.1 in 1.0.1) does the non-metal patch, USB1.1 part should stay.

Even after resetting the People Album I am getting a lot of wrong Face assignments to People! The problem crawls then over to the other devices (iPadOS 17 / iOS 16). Maybe for the time being disable mediaanalysisd ?

Could anyone having updated to OCLP 1.1.0 please confirm, if People detection got better? I guess it might involve resetting the whole “People & Pets” Album / Database though. I am NOT talking about Photos.app / Memories crashing specifically (this worked on my end), but only the detection of faces, which got completely wasted with macos 14 Sonoma (upgraded from Ventura) & OCLP 1.0.1. I cannot imagine that it has to do with Sonoma at all, I guess it is that the faces tiles get rendered in a distorted manner (with non-original metal-capable machines).

How would I set up face detection / people, and pets, etc. I never used the feature on Monterey, or any other supported OS. Memories seems to be in tact, in photos for 14.0 on open core 1.1.0. Memories was just automatically curated for me, I didn't do anything.

Find and name photos of people and pets on Mac

Use Photos on Mac to view and name the people, dogs and cats that appear in your photos and in People & Pets.

The trick is to assign names to persons found.

Updated to OCLP 1.1.0 Release last night and checking Photos/People just now it still hasn't improved. No crashing just random photos. This is on Sonoma 14.1 RC (23B73) on my iMac late 2012 13,2.

OK, I thought I did, but to specifically answer your question, you need Monterey to get the firmware updates as they are bundled with the OS. I was also looking for a solution for that as well, and I thought in telling you to keep an install of Monterey automatically implied that it's required as the updates are bundled with the OS updates.

So yes, you need Monterey to continue to get firmware updates, as far as external vs internal, I was told to keep it on the internal drive. You'll have to see if it will apply the updates from an external install.

I run Sonoma 14.1 on my internal SSD on my iMac 13,2 but keep a copy of Catalina on an external USB SSD to update the firmware when required. It's updated twice without problems.

Well Catalina is out of support, so your iMac shouldn't need anymore firmware updates, if Catalina was the last official supported OS. Also good to know that it works from an external drive for you. I know in the past some of of those updates wouldn't install on a non apple supplied drive.

Yes, Catalina is the last supported OS for my iMac 13,2 but I had to replace the main board as it had failed.That arrived with firmware 376/378? and I used the USB SSD to upgrade the firmware to 426 then later to 429. Now keep the Catalina disk just in case...

I've heard mixed reports from different users. On my 2012 mini I kept Catalina (the last supported OS) on a USB drive and it kept the firmware up to date whenever there was an update available. The only "trick" I did was to reset the PRAM to restore any settings modified by OC before booting into Catalina to do the update. Some Macs may also require that the factory hard drive still be installed, but that wasn't the case for me. I could update the firmware just fine with an aftermarket SSD in the machine while running from the USB drive.

Can anyone help...

I have a 7,1 mini that's spoofing to show as an 8,1, but Universal Control just isn't reliable for me. At all. Firstly, it seems to only work when my iPad is connected - which isn't a massive problem - but more often than not, it just isn't available as an option at all. Sidecar works perfectly every time, but Universal Control comes and goes for no reason I can pin down.

A restart might fix it, but more likely it won't. Then suddenly it's available again, and it's driving me mad!

Of course, only working over the cable means that controlling both my mini and my M2 Air is out of the question.

The only other issues I have is that 95% of the time it won't unlock with my Watch, and it has a really hard time connecting to wifi, so I'm wondering whether there's something up with the wireless card - although my keyboard and trackpad work flawlessly, so 🤷🏻‍♂️

Try and report back - you may also include your hardware details with this report. The advice to use the internal original disk is based on a lot of user experiences. I would not generalize it…

I noticed a change in the OCLP 1.1.0-generated EFI that may be worth looking at (as possible causes of new issues):
  • AMFIPass.kext has been upgraded from 1.3.1 -> 1.4.0
EDIT: I thought quirk ThirdPartyDrives had changed from True -> False, but this was my mistake.

EDIT2: I tested AMFIPass.kext 1.3.1 and 1.4.0 with OCLP 1.1.0 post-install patches and Photos still crashes, so the Photos crash issue appears to be due to post-install patches and not EFI.

EDIT3: AMFIPass.kext 1.4.0 does not need a 'beta' boot-arg for Sonoma.

How do you Revert a system that has been patched if your system won't boot and or you can't get into Safe Mode to un-patch?

Keep a bootable SSD w/Monterey on it. Boot from that and upgrade it if / when a sec update comes out.

This applies to all unsupported machines, keep a bootable version onhand of the last supported macOS for your m/c. Upgrading it to any future new sec update will update the firmware etc on the Mac.

I keep mine on a dedicated external SSD to simplify (KIS principal). Some keep it on their internal drive in a separate partition. Some create a dynamic volume but I don't trust that, too many moving parts for my taste and it broke my rMBP10,1 one time.

It's hard to test as we are never aware of new firmwares.
Maybe silent knight can tell us if we are up to date ?
My Mac is an iMac 17,1

This may be a massive leap on my part but I will toss it out.

There are starting to be some iCloud syncing issues reported relating to Sonoma file permission changes to iCloud based files.

On my OCLP Sonoma test system I have been seeing an error come up in Settings "Some iCloud Data isn't Syncing" with an explanation "Your end-to-end encrypted data isn iCloud can't be accessed on this device."

Apple Photos people identification is a piece of encrypted information propagated across your various devices.

If any form of Photos recognition isn't working on your Mac, if you also have an iDevice try identifying the person or pet on an iPhone or iPad using 17.x to see if this syncs.
