This is what I was looking for, thank you.

From skimming the thread, I think the issue is the card - but I don’t have another one to use, and I don’t really want to buy a compatible card.

1) there’s the performance hit
2) I’d rather just keep the money and put it towards buying a newer Mac.

Being able to hibernate the computer is a thing I do a lot, so losing sleep makes me reluctant to want to try the upgrade. I don’t know if anyone has found a fix for it.

I evaluated the tradeoffs for my Mac Pro 3,1 and in the end upgraded the GPU to be compatible with High Sierra. While I want to save my money for that iMac Pro upgrade, keeping this machine limping along at least buys me time to evaluate options and potentially hold out for an update. Only time will tell (an iMac today costs the same as one in three months) but at least my Mac Pro is fully operational.

What is your current installed version? Did you installed my softwareupdate patch? Check
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.softwareupdated.plist for
DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES key. SIP are disabled? This patch is not working if SIP is enabled. Check it with
csrutil status command.

Thanks to the wonderful work/research of @parrotgeek1, I have now been able to add a very beneficial feature to High Sierra Patcher: A patch that allows custom/modified kexts to load even with SIP enabled! This new feature will ONLY disable the kext-signing and PRAM modification (for APFS users) restrictions of SIP, all other SIP features will remain enabled unless explicitly disabled using csrutil. With this new patch, you'll now be able to reset PRAM without the worry of having your USB quit working. It is available in the latest version of High Sierra Patcher, and is being pushed via Patch Updater to current users. Enjoy!

I don't thinks so that the patcher works with enabled SIP because of the code injection. Can you check it?

Yep, I've checked, and it does indeed work... Unsigned kexts are loaded successfully, and are included in prelinkedkernel. CSRUtil even reports that kext singing enforcement is disabled.

EDIT:

Ah, you're right... It does prevent your Software Update Patch from working. I'll have to disable more SIP features I guess..

When i checked it last time, SIP enforces matching certificates for code injection. So, only signed dylib can inject code to any other app (and the app must be signed also), and only matching certificates can be working. If Apple signed it's own binaries, the patches also must be signed by Apple.

Mac Pro 3,1 (2008) [8c @ 2.8ghz]
Radeon 7950 (Mac Edition - legit, not a flashed card)
I have a compatible Wifi/BT card that I installed many years ago so I could get continuity features.

from reading the thread, I know there are some issues with Sleep mode & the graphics card, so if it will end up being too much trouble or I have to switch to a different card then I'll probably just stay on El Cap.

Can anyone share their experiences / tips / advice?

Thanks.

I have a flashed AMD R9 280x card (no wifi) and I suffer the sleep issue too (also red display issue especially in Preview and sometimes in Safari). I had to patch the AMD drivers or I wouldn't be able to install.
I still have the older 8800 GT and I will check with this card as soon as I have time.
If Nvidia cards are ok, a non flashed GTX680 i pretty cheap on ebay.

I thought the only supported GPUs in High Sierra were the original 2 from amd and the 8800 GT? Wouldn’t using a 680 just leave you with the same problems we are seeing with the 7950? Or would there be some kind of fix with Nvidia web drivers?

Newer Apple provided AMD drivers works only with newer CPU's (nehalem based xeons and i series).

Great news. Resetting PRAM is my first recourse at any signs of trouble & it's what has been putting me installing High Sierra on my 2008 Mac Pro 3,1 & 2008 17" A1261 MacBookPro4,1.
[doublepost=1516387984][/doublepost]Now that I have decided to upgrade my 2008 17" A1261 MacBookPro4,1 to High Sierra using dosdude1's patcher I have discovered that the WiFi module I have will not work. It's a bit confusing as to which WiFi module will work & fit in the MacBookPro4,1. I'm in the UK. Can someone provide a link to a suitable module?

I'd recommend a Broadcom BRCM4322, or an Atheros AR5BXB112. Any card will work, even if it's not an official Apple card and intended for use in a PC. Both those cards are relatively inexpensive.

Thanks for the very quick response. I found lots of AR5BXB112 from iMacs on eBay but they have three connectors for the antennae whereas the model in my MBP has only two. Is this AR5BXB112 suitable? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/iMac-A13...848741?hash=item3f87c62265:g:zmkAAOSwQNRZx-4Z

Thanks @dosdude1 for your great work! I'm running high sierra now on my MacbookPro 5,5, and it runs absolutely great. There is just one little flaw. The camera is never detected. In know you wrote about Virtual Machine drivers probably being responsible for that. I never had those installed, so do you have any other hints?

Yeah, that's fine. You'll only need to connect the two antennas.
Any MacBookPro3,1 or 4,1 that i see had 3 antenna connector. The third one are hidden under some

Any MacBookPro3,1 or 4,1 that are i ever saw, had 3 antenna connector but only two connected to the card and the third one is hidden under some insulating tape.

Below is resolved. Left here to help others:

DosDude:
I tried updating a 3,1 Mac Pro with updated BTLE/WiFI card and an Apple AMD 5 series card. Ran El Capitan fine. It upgraded the El Capitan installation on an internal SSD.
It stalls on the progress bar at about 90% with the tooth busy wheel. I reinstalled and patched a second time, same result. It does boot into safe mode.
Any suggestions? Luckily, the SSD is still HFS+ so I can go back.
El Capitan worked fine with the hardware installed including basic Continuity.
[doublepost=1516492582][/doublepost]Graphics are an ATI RADEON 5770.
I re-patched since I suspected a graphics issue (safe boot.)
This time, it booted into High Sierra ok, but the graphics were in safe mode (slow, tiling.)
I rebuilt all the caches and all was fine.

The 3,1 with a Radeon ATI 5770 is running 10.13.2 and having a problem with a black display screen. This seems similar to the Sleep wake problem reported with other cards.
- Is there a fix for this 5000x card?
- Has anybody used the 10.13.3 beta on this config. Does the patcher work with it?

I had a HD 6850 in my Mac Pro with all the "bugs". I tried to install a "PC" GT 1030 and I had to remove the AMD patch. Everything work fine with the NVIDIA drivers. I lost the boot screen but I can use the sleep mode.

But, I would know if it is possible to reinstall the AMD patch if I want to switch back to the 6850 card. I know it is possible to do so using the USB stick but, as I lost the boot screen, it is not very simple. I don't find a way to do it with the "Patch Updater".

Put in an Apple ATI 4870 from the pile. Of course, the connector was buried under the antennas from the updated WiFi BLE card, a little three minute head scratcher.
But that card works well.
This thing has better BLE range than my 5,1 with and updated card! Hand off from two rooms away.

Hey, I have a question - High Sierra working like a charm on my MacBook 5.2 but how can i set righ click to work like it was (place two fingers on trackpad and click on trackpad button to perform right click)

To set up secondary click and other trackpad features, choose Apple () menu > System Preferences, then click Trackpad.

The problem is that in MacBook 5,2 my trackpad is recognized as USB mouse and my "mouse" preferences look like this on photo, there is no option to set it
