Ok. But I have managed to get HS on my machine as a 4,1. I have a new RX 580 in the mail that runs natively with HS. If I flash my system now, would I only create problems? My reason for asking is..... I'm not that tech-savy (though with detailed instructions I'm fine), and I run with the saying "If it ain't broke........".

I guess what I am asking is what advantage would i get if I flashed to 5,1?
[doublepost=1538194280][/doublepost]Also ended up with this message when I tried to instal from your link:

"Your firmware could not be updated, the hard drive partition scheme may not be supported. You must be booted from a GUID partition or RAID scheme"

I have no idea what that means. But as I have said... If everything is working, do I really need this?
You need to upgrade to 138.0.0.0.0 to have the RX-580 working at maximum capacity. With 138.0.0.0.0 you have 5GT/s, with any other firmware 2.5GT/s.

I'll PM you.

Ok. I downloaded a fresh copy of El Capitan to a new HDD and booted from that. I was then able to update the boot ROM from MP41.0081.B04 to MP41.0081.B07 without issue.
Machine still will not flash. Now I get a 5570 error. I checked to ensure csrutil is disabled.... It is.
Using the Mac Pro 2009-2010 Firmware Tool (as given below) and MacProEFIUpdate.dmg (January 29, 2015).

I'm not using an SSD. I am using a wired Mac keyboard, and the old 515Mb GT 120. I have nothing else on the disk besides the fresh copy of El Capitan 10.11.6

This is a very stubborn machine. Maybe the MacProEFIUpdate.dmg is damaged or not the right one. I'm at a complete loss.

A further update from Apple occurred.
I was downloading an official copy of High Sierra (given that my Mac is now 5,1 and can) and there was a firmware update to the Boot ROM as given...

Latest version of High Sierra (properly downloaded from Apple) is running fine on 500 Gb HDD with GT 120 512Mb graphics. Will install the new Radeon Nitro+ RX 580 8Gb when it arrives next week.

It has taken me almost 2 weeks to get to this stage. :p

Before installing your GPU, you need do trash your old install and do a clean one. Now you have a supported Mac.

I did exactly that. Given the 5,1 can now download directly from Apple, I wiped the old install of HS that I got from Dosdude's Patcher and did a complete fresh install of HS from Apple. No issues with the install and it's working great.

Time to change the CPU for a Westmere hexa. eBay has W3690 for around $80.

I don't need my Mac to be a gaming monster. What started all this was that CCP, the developers of Eve Online, decided to pull support for Macs running El Capitan so we (the Eve Mac community) had to upgrade in order to continue playing that game. It was not CCPs fault as apparently it came down from Apple to them via an email and we were all given just 24 hours notice. There is a thread regarding all this on the Eve Online Forums. Anyhow, my next thing will be to move the High Sierra OS from the 1 TB HDD to my 250GB SSD which is still currently running El Capitan. I'll do this once I have the new RX 580 up and running (delivery is next week). I will of course clone the SSD first to avoid any mistakes using SuperDuper. The only other game I run is Second Life so I don't need massive processing power. Once I can be assured everything is fine, I'll then clone the SSD (with High Sierra on it) and put that clone away someplace as my back up drive.

Maybe in the future I may upgrade the CPU as you have given above. I did look on eBay (as you suggested) and found the CPUs (used) to be around the $150.00 mark (Australian). That's a bit expensive for me at present given the RX card has already cost me $280.00.

I will say thank you for all your help. Could not have gotten this far without this Forum and the great advice to be gained here. But I'm done with upgrades as after two weeks of this my brain is fried.

A few differences to note: the login screen is now red when it wasn't before (I've read this is a common bug on this setup, though), on the boot select screen there's a new 10.13.6 Recovery drive that I didn't have before (gives a "no" sign if you try to boot it), and File Vault doesn't want to encrypt the APFS drive anymore (it's complaining something about a boot partition/file missing, or something like that). The old setup was definitely encrypted before, and these are the differences I've noticed so far. At least I now know my machine isn't borked.

Just want to post an update to anyone who followed my issue: I've gotten APFS encrypted up and running just fine. And the differences I noted are due to the encryption. I never saw the red login screen before because the decryption screen bypasses it. There is no recovery partition available on APFS encrypted (at least for the MP 3,1). And this time I started with the SSD formatted as APFS encrypted, so no conversion was necessary.

And an update to my earlier side note: I wiped and redid the Win10 SSD and all is good again and fully up to date. That said, I'm still not sure what caused my original MacOS setup to stop booting in the first place.

Hello,
the past weekend i had a weird issue.
I installed MacOS High Sierra 10.13.6 over MacOS Sierra 10.12.6 with dosdude1 patch tool.
All went ok, but i have a Radeon HD 5770 and so unfortunately "system wake from sleep" is not working.
So i decided to reinstall macOS Sierra: i formatted my macintosh HD and made a clean install of macOS Sierra.

The problem is with my TIME MACHINE backup: When i tried to recover from my backup (10.12.6) it gave me this error:

"you can't restore this backup because it was created by a different model of Mac"

What?? This backup was created with my same Mac Pro 3.1!!
I tried boot into safe mode...nothing... reinstalling Sierra..nothing... it didn't work.
The only backup it let me recover from was that created with High Sierra 10.13.6!
So, to recover all my files, i turned back to High Sierra but this situation is strange to me: Why i can't simply revert to my previous backup created with 10.12.6?
Anyone can help me?

Thank you in advance!

Ive just started encountering a new issue with my 9,1 iMac. It appears to freeze, but background processes are still working, e.g plex server etc. Mouse still works, as in I can see it move, but can't click on anything. Its almost as if I have been locked out of the computer.

Cant force quit anything, have to hard reboot. System returns to normal but then inevitably happens again.

I have a mid 2009 MacBook Pro 17inch, 5,2, running the latest APFS version of High Sierra with Dosdude's great patch. Until two weeks ago, everything was running perfectly. Then, without any new updates or anything, my Macbook Pro wouldn't wake up anymore. I had to kill it and reset NVRAM upon restart. I noticed a few more things: so now sleep doesn't work at all (goes to sleep, but screen stays black upon wakeup), I cannot change the brightness of the display (though the indicator is shown on the screen), I have random restarts every once in a while and I cannot switch from the 9400M to the 9600M (after the logout it still tells me to log out for changes to take effect). All of these used to work until that one day.

I've read that those issues can occur in general, but I cannot understand how they can appear all of a sudden without any obvious changes to the system. Does anybody have an idea?

I've tried resetting SMC, NVRAM/PRAM, reinstalling High Sierra, reapplying the patches from dosdude, first aid for the disk, running Onyx. All to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a MacBook 7,1 A1342. Core 2 duo 2.4 with the nvida geforce 320m. Stock hdd and stock 2gb of ram for right now. Plans to upgrade to an ssd and 8/16gb of ram haven't decided.

I used the patcher tool to to download high sierra and patch it. Made the USB drive and installed the os. It hung on me installing st th very end with the apple logo on the screen and progress bar maxed out t the bottom. I let it sit like that for a good hour then turned the system off booted into the flash drive and applied patches. Finished set up and everything seems to be working from what I can tell. Had to run the scrip to add the updated tool. It still dosnt show up tho. I will be doing a fresh instal when I get the ssd tho with the newly made USB. Remade it incase something might have been messed up and that caused the hang with the first install.

Here are my question:

1. How compatible is high sierra with my laptop? I saw the min requirements but I still have to ask.

2. Is my gpu causeing some of the slowness?

3. I know that an ssd and more ram will make a huge impact. In changing the performance of this MacBook. Are there any specific ones that work better then others with Macs.

4. Is there anything I need to install or uninstall to make the os smoother and more compatible?

This is my first Mac. It was given to me by my little brother so that I can get some hands on experience with Mac OS. So this is all kinda new to me. I've used windows since I was a kid. But this is my first time ever having a Mac to play around with and be able to dive into and mess up and change things as I want.

Thanks for reading and thanks for replaying.

Also a big thanks to the patch maker for making this possible for us all.

Hi people.
I have a problem with copy data files.
I tried many usb but the error is always the same:

...Error copying files

What should I do?

thanks

I had been using a https://www.edimax.com/edimax/merch...wireless_adapters_ac600_dual-band/ew-7811uac/ but swapped it out for an AirPort Extreme BCM94322MC card which is still supported with legacy drivers in Mojave. The Edimax's implementation of their drivers is a tad annoying as it seems to load and connect much later than the Airport cards resulting some software that loads first failing to get network access initially. The main reason though was that prior to dosdude's legacy usb drivers power fixes, ejecting usb memory sticks would kill the Edison wifi drivers connection. Fortunately that problem went away.

Hi! I have a 2008 Mac Pro (3,1). Dual 2.8Ghz quadcores, 8GB RAM, and a 1 TB internal HDD and 128GB SSD. I was running Yosemite and opted to put in @dosdude1 's High Sierra patch. After installation, my mac has rebooted and shows a cut circle. What am I doing wrong? Please help me.

Sounds like you forgot to run the post-install patching tool on the patched High Sierra macOS installer and apply the required patches for your machine. The patched High Sierra macOS installer is only patched itself to boot and doesn't automatically migrate those patches to any volumes it installs on during the normal macOS installation. Likewise, if you do a software update afterwards, you may need to reapply the post-installation patches from the patched High Sierra macOS installer USB memory stick.

Hi everyone, I'm new here, and I come after all the usual troubleshooting. I'm trying to install High Sierra on my 9,1 iMac and after following the dosdude process, when I want to boot the computer from the flash drive, I get the progress bar and right at the end, a grey "no entry" sign. I never get to the installer screen (so I never actually get to install the new OS). Can anyone shed some light? I'm having trouble digging the appropriate info from here. Thanks.

EDIT: I found a comment mentioning that I should change the USB stick. I actually found an old harddrive and I was able to complete the installation. So I guess USB stick failure "is" a thing. Now the computer seems to be booting (although taking a while) - will post back with updates.

This is the exact same problem I am having on the exact same model iMac. Did you have some success? I tried loading on an old hard drive, but I'm still not able to get it to boot into recovery mode. I'm wording if I need a "wired" Mac USB keyboard. I've tried reseting NVRAM, several windows keyboards. My only Mac Keyboard is bluetooth.

Hi everyone and godinav1. I was able to make it work, I had to reset the PRAM, but it booted correctly. No "recovery mode" was required. I do suggest you get a wired keyboard to rule out issues of bluetooth connectivity...
