Tried installing Security Update 2018-002 10.13.6 on 2008 Mac Pro running DosDude's HS patch. Update froze the system and I ended up having to restore from TM. What's the trick to get these updates installed on an unsupported machine?
It's not just "unsupported" machines having issues with this update, a lot of folks including myself have had it fail on so-called supported machines.
BTW this is the first and so far only update that has gone sideways for me and I'm sure for others also.

For anyone trying to get the bcm4321 working in High Sierra, I finally got it to work (MacBook Pro 4,1) and it was relatively simple.

I did the following:

  1. Download Kext Utility
  2. Download OSX combo update 10.10.5
  3. Download Pacifist
  4. Extract the IO80211family.kext from the 10.10.5 package using Pacifist
  5. Load the Kext using Kext Utility
All the other solutions I tried either didn't work at all or the card showed as active but couldn't detect any wireless networks.

Hi I have just re-visited dosdude1's patcher for my MacPro 3,1 as El Capitan is no longer supported for security patches. I have a system running and was interested in getting the Wifi working again. Which is the KEXT utility you use and where might I find it? I have an unsupported wifi card (BCM43xx (0x14E,0x88)) and did buy another but it was DOA and I broke an antenna connection re-fitting the old one and so gave up on that route.

Will the old KEXT from El Capitan fix it I'm my case?

Thanks

Hello everyone,
After installing the night shift patch through the patch updater, I am unable to enter the settings for keyboard, mouse and trackpad. Any solutions for this? Sorry if it has been asked before.

I am very pleased to inform that I've managed to fix this issue. Now I have the night shift and prefpanes working all at the same time. I did it manually by following pikeralpha's guide and changing only the bit for my model. Thanks to jackluke and others who tried to help.

P.S. I tried to install the latest 2018-002 security update manually as per description on the first page of this thread but it failed, although it did not seem to affect the performance of my system. I patched the night shift manually after this failed update.

Good to know. I'll skip this update for the time being. Thanks!

When you say reinstalling the os, do you mean making a new bootable usb from the latest high sierra installer app(that will supposedly include the latest 2018-002 update)? Or just reinstalling the old version that you used to install it in the first place and then completely avoiding the 2018-002 update?

ok so all was working fine untell today when it installed this update. then keyboard and all broke again. so DO NOT INSTALL THIS UPDATE

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201222

Ok this is starting to make some sort of sense. I actually trashed my Recovery HD in order to save space. This might be part of the reason that 2018-002 update failed on me. I am sure that this is not the only reason the update failed though.

Installing the update manually via the method in the first page will result in an error. The error happens when it tries to update the Recovery HD, all the other updates included in the package have been installed. I'm sure this has been discussed earlier on in this thread.

Hi all,

is there a way to get the App Store to work after a successful installation of 10.13.6 (17G65) (update from El Capitan, not a clean install) on a late 2008 MacBook 13" Aluminium (MacBook5,1)?

Whean I open the "App Store" app I can browse the Featured, Top Chart, Categories and Purchased tabs but when i click on Updates it just crush.

TIA
[doublepost=1542868264][/doublepost]I'm not able to list or update using the terminal app neither (softwareupdate -l / -i) and I already tried to reboot from the USB patched installation disk to force cache rebuild and also tried "sudo softwareupdate --clear-catalog" as well as Onyx Maintainance function.

Any suggestion?

Am I the only one with this issue?

Hi, my MacPro 2011 won’t restart or shut down.
I have High Sierra and can’t install the latest update. My Mac Pro won’t accept upgrade to Mojave because my GPU is not supported so I have to stick to High Sierra.
I have boot in safe mode, reset the PRAM and unplugged from the wall. Can’t get it to work. Everyday, I need to hold the power button to turn it off.

Any recommendations?
I’m considering reinstalling the OS.
I’m certain it’s an OS issue. I was able to shut down using an USB recover drive stick but when I use the Computer OS, it won’t work.
Thanks

How do we check to see if it's installed if it's not listed as being installed?
System version is 17G3025 instead of 17G65.

As I read Julius' post, he was quite extensive over this and I guess the 10.10.5 kext is the way to go.

There seems no official download page for kext utility 2.6.6 anymore, so I chose the for me most trustworthy site to download.

Btw. after the accidental install of SU 2018-002, everything works fine on my MacBook Air 2,1, but Messages won't let me log in. Bummer.

the latest usb installer dose not have the update on it, i dont know for how long but thats what i did made a new usb installer you dont have to but i did.

I installed this on a mid-2009 MacBook Pro 13 (5,5) about a week ago (clean install, not an update, on an SSD) and it's been running more or less flawlessly. If anything the machine is running faster and smoother than El Cap was, though this could admittedly be the result of the clean install.

The Oct 30 SU 2018-002 (done via the App Store) got hung up, and after restart I got a message that some parts of the update were unsuccessful, but as far as I can see the update was in fact completed. In any event, the App Store is showing no new updates.

System Version: macOS 10.13.6 (17G3025)

Although this is my first post on MacRumors, I've been using the Mac platform for a very, very, very long time. I first touched a 128K Macintosh the week before it was officially released during Apple dealer training.

Although I have read things on the site for years, somehow I had never got around to creating an account.

I joined today because I wanted to thank juliusmaximus for his post about using the old kext from Yosemite to enable the 4321 card. As I have the exact model of machine he used I thought I would give it a whirl and it worked for me.

First, a couple of comments that I have not fully investigated yet but will report back when I have more information.

On the reboot from the Kext Utility installation I had a kernel panic but have not had one at reboot since. I have also had a kernel panic using NetSpot Pro as it was one of the applications I wanted to test with a supported card. I could see an app like this possibly having some driver dependencies, if I figure out anything useful I will report.

I have Security Update 2018-004 installed, and I've disable the annoying Mojave upgrade notifications.

On a related note for wireless networking - I have been using a Patriot labelled Realtek 8188 family USB dongle with some TP-Link drivers. It worked, but it was flaky and subjectively slower than the Broadcom card is running now.

I ended up using the TP-Link drivers because right around the time I was doing my patcher install Realtek reconfigured their web site and try as I may I cannot track down any Mac family drivers on their site as of my latest search yesterday. So, if you have them, store them away carefully.

Thats all for now, thanks again to juliusmaximus for the Broadcom driver hack, dosdude1 for all the High Sierra patcher work and everyone who has contributed to me still using a MacBook Pro 4,1 built in the last week of June 2008 for useful work over 10 years later.

Are you on Sierra or High Sierra? It's Sierra that's got 2018-004 for the latest update. High Sierra has 2018-002.

This is the High Sierra thread. Not really annoyed, but I've been waiting for someone to say they've got a security update for High Sierra installed without problems before I "upgrade" from El Capitan on my mid-2009 Macbook.

What build ID

As of 8:05 AM local time, Nov. 30, 2018

System Software Overview:

System Version: macOS 10.13.6 (17G3025)
Kernel Version: Darwin 17.7.0
Boot Volume: HighSierra
Boot Mode: Normal
Computer Name: MacBookPro-HighSierra
User Name: redacted
Secure Virtual Memory: Enabled
System Integrity Protection: Disabled

System Version: macOS 10.13.6 (17G3025)

Maybe it's the Security Update 2018-004 (El Capitan) released on July 9, 2018...

No, @MacGeekYYC is right. Build 17G3025 is High Sierra with SecUpd 2018-002. He did it. Maybe it's because SIP is disabled? Anyway, except that he's on a 2008 Macbook Pro, and I'm on a mid-2009 Macbook, our setups are pretty similar. Gives me hope. Looks like I have a new update project over Xmas.

@MacGeekYYC, how did you install SecUpd 2018-002 on High Sierra? Did you follow the pkgutil instructions in the first post of this thread?

High Sierra (10.13 Beta) BOOTING from APFS partition on mbpro 5,3 (Mid 2009)

[dual-boot with Sierra 10.12.5 HFS+]

Using @foxlet newCore 0.1 LegacyInstaller and "pre-release" APFSBoot EFI

Can't wait for 0.2 UI...

Enjoy! Thanks again to @foxlet . This is looking good, everything's pretty snappy.

So... would you recommend the upgrade on the MacbookPro 5,3? I'd stick to El Capitan, but there's software I can't update anymore... but I don't want to take a considerable hit in performance either....

Thanks for the feedback!

Thank you, everyone who contributes their knowledge and hard work here.

I dropped in to ask what's happened to Night Shift on my wife's Macmini3,1. Now I realise we were lucky. Security Update 2018-002 installed without any problems except for breaking Night Shift, so I shall leave well alone.

I've turned off automatic updates for both the Macmini3,1 (High Sierra) and my own Macmini5,1 (Mojave), and in future I'll make sure to check back here before installing anything :)

Hi @Charles Butcher

can I ask you some questions?
  • Your Macmini3,1 is Early 2009 or Late 2009?
  • The hard disk of your Macmini3,1 is formatted HFS+ or APFS?
  • After installing the Security Update 2018-002 on your Macmini3,1 which version of the Firmware (Boot ROM) is shown to you on "System Information > Hardware"?

Thank you in advance for the answers.
