Use the method described on page 1 of this discussion under Security and OS software updates, you need to modify the Distribution file.

Following the described procedure, on a MacPro3,1 running 10.13.6, the stand alone installation starts out fine but ends with an "installation failed" message. There are a number of separate updates in this package, but it's unclear which one fails.

L Caputo, I restored from backup again back to 17G65. I then did the manual update instead of the automatic one from the App Store. Unfortunately, there was an error with this method also(See below). I checked the installation log and it doesn't show there.

Yes this has been covered a lot in these pages it is the Recovery HD update that fails, all other aspects of the update should have been installed though. To check it has been installed About This Mac> System Report> Software > Installations, click Install Update twice to see the list as most recent first.

Yep you are right, okay so if the Security Update does not show up in the App Store Updates page then it means it has (probably) installed.
Also check the build number of your OS, click on About This Mac and Control-click on the text 'Version 10.13.6'
the build number should show up in brackets, if it has updated it should read (17G3025).
Alternatively you can read your Install log, whilst in Finder click on Go , then Go To Folder and type in
/private/var/log scroll down to install.log, you can view this in quicklook but be prepared it is a lot of reading unless you know the approximate time you ran the installation.

Right I've got to get back on stage in 10 minutes and I'm having trouble locating my tassles.

I've done the Safari update separately, now about to embark on the security update. Some things bother me. Firstly, the downloaded pkg has the name SecUpd2018-002Sierra.pkg - not High Sierra. Secondly, the download size was approx 1.8GB - not ~400MB as stated on the web page. I downloaded from here, please tell me if I'm wrong.

Finally got the 2018-002 security update to complete the install on my MacPro 3,1, it even shows up in "About This Mac" -> installations.
But it came at a price, now I have to figure out how to deal with these 2 issues...
It's times like this I'm really glad that Mac Pro's are just a hobby for me.;)

So what method did you employ to get the security update installed?
And have subsequent restarts solved the preference pane errors?

No you are right, it is 1.82Gbs, and it is definitely for High Sierra, it is just that Apple are employing the same roomful of monkeys who are in the middle of typing the complete works of Shakespeare.

And have subsequent restarts solved the preference pane errors?
1: Did a fresh install of High Sierra onto a USB external SSD on a supported mac.
2: Applied the security update (2018-002) to this fresh install while running from the supported mac.
3: Mounted the external SSD on my MP3,1 and applied the post install patches.
4: Copied over the 2 faulty pref panes with good ones from a working High Sierra system, this fixed the errors.
The only odd thing is the 2 security update entries, appears this would be roughly start and competed time of the update.
Took awhile but it got the job done.

Forget about everything in my previous post.
For a short while I thought I'd solved my problems, but not so.
Those Pref Pane errors returned after a few restarts and I cannot figure out why.
There are 3 panels that error out, (Trackpad, mouse and keyboard) all the rest are fine.
These 3 do have something in common (Bluetooth), but I'm still at a loss.
So for the time being at least I'm giving this security update issue a rest, or rather myself a rest from the problem.

Hi, did face the same problem with my MacPro3,1
Found out that the problem keyboard, mouse, trackpad and accessibility pref panes give error, is because of Nightshift patcher.
1.Did the secupdate by editing the .pkg as per instructions in page 1 of this thread and installed it.
It lasts with the known error.
2.Booted with the USB boot/installation of the HS patcher and run the post install. Whithout post install, i get, when i boot in safe mode and recovery mode, a restriction sign.
3.Booted normally. All is fine, only the night shift is not working.
If run the night shift patch (re-install) then the problem with the pref panes keyboard, mouse, trackpad, accessibility is back again.

I think you nailed it, thanks for posting your results.
I just installed the nightshift patch on a fresh High Sierra install and just like you said, it broke the pref panels.
Glad I make numerous Cloned backups.:D
I can live without the nighshift feature, actually I think F.lux does the job much nicer anyhow.
https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/37261/f-lux
Installed 10.13.6 APFS, updated to SecUpd2018-002 re installed NightShift, can confirm Keyboard. Mouse and Trackpad come up with the unable to load due to Intel Mac, and Accesibility is just a general failure to load.
Any response by dosdude1 would be nice.

I still have the problem where if the APFS SSD disk is the only one in the MP 3.1 it will boot to APFS disk, but if my other HFS+ disks are in place the Mac always shows the APFS verbose start but then just switches over to Sierra, if I pull out the Sierra disk it will default to the El Capitan disk, but interestingly if I leave in my Lion disk, it will boot to the APFS SSD.

Crikey I am going bananas most of my Mac time is installing, uninstalling, trying different methods to get daily functionality out of this old slugger. bought new graphics card and SSD so I can install Mojave, but this booting problem negates me moving to Mojave on the SSD, I have a copy of Mojave on an HFS+ spinner
and it woks fine.

Same problem here, the more I try to correct these issues the worse it seems to get, soon as I think I've solved the problem another issue rears it's ugly head.
Right now I'm starting with a fresh install of High Sierra and staying away from the nightshift patch.

Hi! I have a succesfull High Sierra installation on my MacPro3,1 using dosdude1's patcher. However, I added a second HDD and cloned my HS partition onto a new drive hoping I could boot it from there.

Unfortunately, no matter which one I select in "Startup disk" preferences pane my Mac boots into first one. Also, in "APFS boot selector" preferences pane I don't even see the new partition/drive.

I ran dosdude1's "macOS Post Install" and patched HS volume on second drive, without sucess. No matter what I do I cannot boot from new HDD/volume.

How do you guys clone your patched HS installations on unsupported machines?

EDIT: SOLVED running dosdude1's patched installation again and patching new volume from there. Boots OK. But still can't figure out how to boot switch between drives.

Thanks :)

I clone my High Sierra drives using Carbon Copy Cloner, I use a mix of PCIe blade, SSD's and spinners and have no problem whatsoever picking or switching boot drives either from the Startup pref panel or using cmd+alt boot selector on startup.
But then I also use the conventional HFS+ format file system on my MacPro 3,1.

Thank you, everyone who contributes their knowledge and hard work here.

I dropped in to ask what's happened to Night Shift on my wife's Macmini3,1. Now I realise we were lucky. Security Update 2018-002 installed without any problems except for breaking Night Shift, so I shall leave well alone.

I've turned off automatic updates for both the Macmini3,1 (High Sierra) and my own Macmini5,1 (Mojave), and in future I'll make sure to check back here before installing anything :)

It is normal for security updates and OS updates to knock out Night Shift, you can get it working again by opening the Patch Updater app in your Applications/ Utilities folder. Press the Control key down and click on Night Shift, click re install, You will then have to restart your Mac. Now normally this all works hunky dory, but this time if you reinstall Night Shift it has an adverse affect on four of the preference panes in System Preferences, Keyboard, Mouse, Trackpad and Accessibility, they no longer work.
Haven't heard from dosdude1 if there might be a fix forthcoming, he's probably too busy with the mess that is Mojave.

Can someone link me to compatible wireless airport cards? I have an iMac 8,1 I am working on and I am considering putting High Sierra on it (although el cap is fine) and my wireless card is on the bad list. Dosdude lists the bad ones, but where to find the good ones? No one puts hardware IDs on their listing

Hmm...

On both my 2009 MacBookPro5,5 and my 2008 MacBook5,1, Safari was updated, and all my Preference Panes work fine.

However, in System Report, on my MacBookPro5,5, the Security Update 2017-001 was listed twice (and I remember there was an error during installation so it was installed twice) but 2018-002 is only listed once.

OTOH, on my MacBook5,1 no Security Updates are listed at all. Strange.

Hi everyone,

[EDIT]
after the release of the Broadcom BCM4321 WiFi patch, the original WiFi card in my iMac 8,1 works perfectly! Please disregard this post!
[/EDIT]

first of all kudos to everyone involved in making my iMac 8,1 (late 2008) run High Sierra. Thank you!

I had to replace the original WiFi card because it is not supported (as described in dosdude's patch page). I have installed a card identified by DPCIManager as "BCM4322 802.11a/b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller". The kext loaded for this device is "AirportBrcm4331.kext". The Apple System Report / Network / WiFi says it's a third party device.

The WiFi card runs perfectly fine but the problem is that the WiFi country code or location is permanently set to US (United States) which means I don't have access to 2.4 GHz channels 12 and 13 which are allowed here in Germany (country code DE) and are the least crowded channels in my building.

macOS uses location services and/or the country code of the nearest WiFi stations to determine what country to set. Location services are working correctly and my router and nearby routers identify themselves with country code DE (Germany) or EU (European Union).

I'm not familiar with the basics behind running High Sierra on unsupported macs but I believe it has to do something with the broadcom driver or I need to patch the kext file or (as last resort) change the default country code permanently from US to DE.

Mabye someone here already has a solution for my problem or can point me in the right direction. Any help would be much appreciated.

Best regards,
Andy

Hi, i'm writing from a 5,1 Macbook with HS. I have just modified and installed the 002 patch (ending with an error), and after reboot, i have reinstalled the nightshift patch from patch updater. I got 17G3025 in about this mac. Everything seemed to be ok until I realised that Bettertouchtool won't start (it says "bettertouchtool cant be open").

I tried to start the app using terminal, but it says:

/Applications/BetterTouchTool.app/Contents/MacOS/BetterTouchTool

dyld: Symbol not found: _OBJC_CLASS_$_CBTrueToneClient

Referenced from: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/UniversalAccess.framework/Versions/A/UniversalAccess

Expected in: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/CoreBrightness.framework/Versions/A/CoreBrightness

in /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/UniversalAccess.framework/Versions/A/UniversalAccess

Abort trap: 6

What can I do? Will a complete reinstall using a installation disk using dosdude1 app fix the problem? Or should I recover the corebrightness framework from my time machine?

TY in advance.

[...]Bettertouchtool won't start[...]What can I do?
Bettertouchtool is a 3rd party app, right? Did you try simply uninstalling it and reinstalling it?
[doublepost=1542049374][/doublepost]With all the dodgy issues with latest security update 2018-002, maybe we're better off waiting for Apple to make the whole HS OS available inclusive of this update and re-install using the patch tool? This was a recommended solution previously when updates were problematic. Will there be a full installer update eventually that would include this security update?

Yes, sure. And I installed the latest version.

Do you think that the latest installer that you download using dosdude tool doesn't include the patch?
