Okay because I don't particularly need it, as long I have the latest OS I don't care. Even if our lord and savior dosdude1:p can't make them APFS compatible I guess we can all happily live without it. By the way, are there some known issues on my particular MacBook model, like screen brightness adjustments or backlit keyboard nor working? Because I had some little trouble with the backlit keyboard under Sierra, only after I reinstalled the last version 10.12.6, everything was working normally again.

So my MacBook Pro Early 2008 runs an SSD, does that mean if I would upgrade to High Sierra (17A362a), Mac OS would just automatically reformat my drive to APFS without asking me, which would keep my Mac from booting?
???

Your early 2008 MBP isn't officially supported by 10.13. If you decide to hack 10.13 onto your 2008 MBP then you are responsible for patching the install so that it boots correctly. The installer will not 'reformat' to APFS. It will convert it in place keeping data in tact. Once converted or manually formatted (by you) to APFS then you will need to patch it using dosdudes APFS patcher that's built into the installer patch in order to boot from APFS.

I'm currently running the latest public beta on a 2008 MBP and the only thing I needed to do was to install a supported wifi card. Everything else works.

well I of course I know how that it only works with the patcher... and I've upgraded the WiFi card quite a while ago.

But it seems that I've just missed the fact that APFS now works with unsupported Macs, I thought you need to keep them in the hfs+ realm

I've been running Sierra on my unsupported MacBook Pro 5.1 just nicely, and haven't really been doing any betatesting of High Sierra this year. With the GM release candidate out I thought I could give it a spin on a separate partition, but how do I download it on my unsupported Mac? The App Store says it can't be installed on this Mac, an I did of course enroll in the PB program and install the macOS Public Beta Access Utility.

On dosdude1's highsierra website, it gives you the option of downloading the installer where it says "-- Alternatively, you can download a copy here" under "Things you'll need".

I assume like past releases there wont be an upgrade from the betas to GM, and it will require an "upgrade" install from the USB stick.

IS THIS 100% TRUE??
Late 2009 Mac Mini Currently on Beta 7A360a

What is the correct process to update, please?

A message about the High Sierra GM Candidate has appeared in my notifications saying its be downloaded and ready to install. However it doesn't appear in the AppStore updates list :)

My understanding is that the recovery partition in 10.13 is actually in APFS format so it won't be usable until a EFI boot type hack is crafted for it as well. I believe that is a low priority since the system reinstallation feature in it is useless on unsupported machines and only the Disk Utility aspect is worthwhile.

You have to either download it on a supported machine or use the macOS installer feature built into the High Sierra Patch application.

I can't wait to install the GM candidate since i'm still stuck at work. But I do have some questions before I get to try this.

I also have a MBP5,5 that has High Sierra using dosdude1's patch tool. My questions:
  • Will the GM candidate show up on my AppStore (updates) so I could update it from there?
  • or do I need to go thru the complete patch process again (using v2.2.5) - install and post patch?
Thank you for your input.

Mahalo and ~Aloha!~

Thank you for your answers to my question.

I did the entire patch with v2.2.5 and was able to successfully upgrade to the GM Candidate.

I discovered the same (after I'd closed everything). I just recreated the USB stick with the Installer it had downloaded to my MBP, re-installed, applied patches again and its working perfectly running OS X 10.13 Beta (17A362a)

Never mind, I am able to use dosdude1 patcher to get the terminal to issue the command.. Just complete the install and boot successfully on 10.13 GM Candidate on Mac Pro 2008.

Thx for reply.

The patcher doesn't seem to be downloading the GM release, can someone provide a direct link to the GM?

Edit: Nevermind on the link, I figured it out. I still don't think the patcher is downloading the GM (file dated 9/9). Once downloaded I'll install and try out the AMD patch also as I have a MP 3,1 with 5870.

Just installed High Sierra GM on my MacBook Pro Early 2008 (MBP 4,1) and everything works fine!
Backlit Keyboard, Screen Brightness, Battery Indicator and Trackpad.. all good :)
Thanks so much DosDude1!!

Is it right that it won't be possible to update high sierra through the mac app store?

I tried reading the thread but couldn't find the answer to my questions.

1. I currently have El Capitan. Do I need to download Sierra first before moving on to High Sierra?

2. Is it worth downloading the GM of High Sierra or just wait till the official release?

Thanks

Please test this https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8DiAFi2BTxvTWl1QkVHN3ktYXc/view?usp=sharing

to use it, boot in safe mode with shift key, download this,
extract it, open terminal, cd to folder that you extracted
run ./install.sh
type sudo password

cc @jimithing1

I installed HS GM and gave your suggestion a go on a MP3,1 with AMD5870. Well, I can boot into the desktop without having to use safe mode... however it appears we've moved back to the 80's... The attached is my desktop. I can still boot into safe mode and get a proper desktop, however, the refresh rate is much slower than before (in safe mode).

1. No, just use the dosdude1's patcher
2. This is up to you, it is still a GM Candidate, not the GM.

Is there a way to find out what Build the downloaded "Install High Sierra.app" is?

It shows version 13.0.61 when you click the "get info" option.

Just wondering is there a way to check what Build it is from within it.

If I'm not mistaken, your late 2009 MBP has the model id as MacbookPro5,5. If that is the case, your MBP is not a supported device for High Sierra. But, you can run dosdude1's patcher for unsupported macs.
You can find the patch plus release and process notes here: http://dosdude1.com/highsierra/
I used it on my mid 2009 MBP with success.

2. Is it worth downloading the GM of High Sierra or just wait till the official release?

If you have time to spare and want to run a sandbox before the official release, I think it is worthwhile.
The GM (gold master) candidate was released yesterday.

Have fun.

Thanks

Correction:
Sorry, somehow I assumed you have a late 2009.

My model is the 5,5 so yes it is unsupported.
I just wasnt sure if i had to download and install dosdudes patch for Sierra first then move on to High Sierra.

Is the patch from dosdude the GM? Can it be updated when High Sierra comes out with new updates? Thats the part im confused about.

Well, it's progress of a sort but not a usable solution.
I started a separate thread to ask about success with flashed nVidia recent GPUs but nobody came back with success after 80 or so views, which is disheartening.
I don't see Apple fixing this for the unsupported 3,1 but here is what I find strange. I have a 27" iMac 2009 (Core i7) with a built-in HD4870 option. It runs 10.13 GM Candidate fine. If I put an Apple HD4870 into the MP 3.1, it borks with the spinner at the end of the boot. Is this because the core i7 has the correct SSE4.2 support whereas the Quad-core Intel Xeon does not?

Yeah, that CPU supports SSE4.2. The CPUs in the Mac Pro 3,1 don't.

Thanks dosdude1. So the only hope for better graphics is that some later nVidia GPUs flashed with efi will do the job. Nobody has come forward to confirm this.
[doublepost=1505527587][/doublepost]I've asked on the netkas forums whether anyone has successfully used the MP3,1 with an efi-flashed recent nVidia card.
