Mac Pro 3,1 / AMD Radeon HD 7950 Sapphire Mac:
  • Smooth installation
  • No sleep bug
  • Red flashing bug only in Preview, can live with that…
  • No garbled video
When will Apple hire Mr. Dosdude?

Do you use latest installation media (included supplemental update)?
Can you pleas also test:
  • clipboard
  • Photos (In my Mac Pro photos crash when it download pictures from iCloud)
  • Sleeping work if Mac is in sleep 1min or 2 hours?
Maybe I need to reinstall High Sierra

I have MacBook late 2008 aluminum on Yosemite and iOS devices are running 10. I have encrypted the volume. Would you advise installing Sierra first and then jumping to High Sierra or can I go directly to High Sierra from Yosemite?

For my troublesome case, which might be related to credentials, it was a fresh HS install.

Now a fresh sierra install is perfect.
So what i will do next soon is sierra first and then updated to HS.
Will let you know the result soon

[Update]
Unfortunately a high sierra installed on top of a working sierra method,
just gives me the same odd result as I get from a HS fresh install. no imessage/facetime and purchased apps won't launch.
Dosdude?
Is there anything I can else try?
I can't believe my credentials are causing imessage/facetime not to work.
Other than high sierra, for any OS, not problem at all..
Even HS hackintoshes are working too.

Thanks. I didn't see your previous post. I had downloaded the Supplemental Update from Apple Support but that was only because it wasn't showing up in the App Store. I've since done a new HS install on the MBP 5,5 which I think includes the Supplemental Update. I guess I'll have to wait for something new to come out of the App Store to see if I have fixed the problem or not. Thanks for your help.

That's exactly what I did. I had to unlock the APFS volume in order for the APFS patch option to be available (not greyed out). The only difference is that I unlocked the volume using Disk Utility included on the bootable USB instead of the CLI command.

After I applied the APFS patch, my Macbook5,1 rebooted into the custom EFI boot loader, but then I got the "boot file not found, exiting" message. This is the same message I got before with an older version of the EFI boot loader that did not support encrypted APFS volumes.

The "Post Install" tool indicates v2.3.0 although the patcher version is v2.4.0; is this normal?

Thanks
cinergi

Just to update my last post - I couldn't get it to boot so I did a complete reinstall of High Sierra, then restored my system from a recent Time Machine backup. After re-encrypting the APFS boot volume, I can now still boot fine from it using dosdude1's custom EFI boot loader. I don't know why it didn't work with my existing High Sierra installation, but anyway, it works now... The moral of the story is to always have a recent backup!

  • clipboard works as intended
  • Adobe only here, but when I fire up Photos it seems to work as expected
  • regular energy settings work, haven't tested anything else: computer sleep never, display sleep 30 minutes (put hard disks to sleep, wake from ethernet)
  • wakes properly from timed and manual sleep
I only have the Preview red bug, everything else is okie dokie.

I installed over Sierra, with latest supplemental update included.

Ok, so I installed HS again (latest installation media).
I try to restore data my TimeMachine Backup, but it fails?? Only create user accounts but not restored any data.

  • clipboard seems to work now OK
  • sleep problem still exist
  • RED login screen and Preview red bug still there
  • Photos, not tested yet
  • Share menu behavior is strange? I can't add new programs in share menu and example Mail is missing? I can't tick "share menu" in Internet accounts. Not tested yet
  • Time Machine migration assistant not work

I notice on the Apple Communities High Sierra page a lot of people are missing not having the Assist Me button on the Network preference pane in System Preferences.
So I had a bit of a guddle about using bits from a Sierra install. The instructions below are what I did, if anyone is interested I would like them to try it out on their machines but only if they have a machine that they can fiddle about on and have backups incase everything goes Pete Tong. Some feedback would be nice too. Or if I have missed out on an altogether easier more beautiful solution then please tell me. My other concern is that each time a newer version of High Sierra is released you will need to do the same procedure for each release to get back the Network Assistant/ Diagnostics functionality.

Network Assistant

In High Sierra the Network Diagnostics and Network Setup Assistant apps are no longer in the System/Library/CoreServices location as they had been in previous OS’s.

So I copied those apps over from a Sierra install, the apps are in the same location as above. To drag them over to your High Sierra install you need to be an administrator as this needs to be Authenticated.

Next in High Sierra we need to go to System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/SetupAssistantFramework.framework/Versions/A/SetupAssistantFramework hold the Control key down and click on SetupAssistantFramework then from the submenu click Move To Trash. Now move the framework out of the trash and keep it in an appropriately named folder.

Next in Sierra we need to go to System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/SetupAssistantFramework.framework/Versions/A/SetupAssistantFramework we then copy the framework over to the corresponding location in High Sierra.

Restart your Mac.

You should now be able to launch the apps from within the Core Services folder, or if you prefer move the items to the Dock, just drag the icons to the dock, left side of the separator. Or you could make an alias of each and drag them onto your desktop.

I have none of those problems, except the entirely cosmetic red bug in Preview and some temporary Apple ID mess in Itunes (fixed by using Appstore first). Since reported bugs are not consistently reproducable, I conclude that it is not really hardware related, but due to a rather buggy initial release in general. I suppose much of it will be fixed in coming point releases.

But then again, do you really need High Sierra? I experience absolutely no difference, except that the occasional screen flickering I had before now is gone. I suspect Window Server being all metal is the main gain from this update.

And again, I installed on top of a working Sierra environment. No AFPS. This machine has been obedient to every new system since 2008, only new install ever was in fact Sierra.

Aside from APFS support, the main gain from this update IMO is the fact that it is compatible with new media formats that are completely unsupported in all previous versions of macOS and OS X. This may not be important for some, but it is highly desirable for anyone running a very recent iPhone with iOS 11. Furthermore, the desirability for this file format compatibility will increase over time.

Thank you!...running the Post Install tool again is all ok now.

I am thinking about upgrading my iMac Early 24" with 4GB's RAM and the 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo CPU,
to High Sierra. It is currently on El Capitan.

How does your iMac run?
Does it have 4GB's RAM or 6GB's?
Does it have an SSD or the stock hard drive?
Did you change the WiFi card or are you tethering to ethernet?

Looking forward to these specific answers and anything else you might share, so I can decide.
Thank you

perhaps you should start here; http://dosdude1.com/highsierra/ The year of the iMac might help too.

I have been running High Sierra on a mid 2009 MackBook Pro 5.4 for several weeks now. Absolutely no issues and seems much more stable then Sierra was on my machine. Again thanks to all the folks here who worked on this.

Yes. Thank you
I have actually already done (3) 2009 Mac mini's Plus changed the Wifi Card in the three.
AND all three now have SSD's & 8GB's RAM, which make them run buttery smooth.

Super Thanks to Dosdude1 and everyone who provided input, feedback and resources !!!

I was just looking for some actual feedback from a 2008 iMac 24" owner about their experience Post the upgrade.

The thing with those, is the RAM is typically ONLY 4GB's, though they can be upgraded to 6GB's

Mine is a 2008 iMac Early 24" with 4GB's RAM and the 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo CPU

which is why I seek answers to:

I'm thinking to install High Sierra thanks to the (wonderful) Dosdude tool. I've a MacBook Pro early 2008 with Sierra patched: I was wondering if it's a good idea to change to High Sierra.

- APFS is automatically installed with Dosdudetool - and it prevent, erasing all, to restore the backup of my data from time machine??
- It's APFS on my old MacBook an important change and its features can justify the upgrade?
- Any other suggestion?

I thank anyone who wants to help me: I could not read all the previous posts here present because I don't speak well English.

So, If you have these problems download (latest version in Mac App Store) and install it again (clean installation).
  • clipboard seems to work now OK
  • sleep problem still exist NOT OK
  • RED login screen and Preview red bug still there NOT OK
  • Photos, no crash yet so maybe it is OK ?
  • Share menu behavior is strange? I can't add new programs in share menu and example Mail is missing? I can't tick "share menu" in Internet accounts. That is normal again OK
  • Time Machine migration assistant, After clean install something goes wrong. I try again and all data is now migrated. OK

Did you do a fresh install or an update?

Anyone any ideas on how to get Aperture to support unsupported camera raw files via a system hack?
