I don’t really care if Apple adds MacOS to the iPad via virtual machine or dual boot.

What I don’t wish to see happening is MacOS completely replacing iPadOS.
Agreed, many are calling for an iPadOS overhaul, and knowing Apple, they likely wouldn’t give a choice.

If they overhaul iPadOS in a MacOS way, that’d be horrible.

It feels like Apple's ecosystem is due for some unified, flexible OS at some point. The iPad is far too capable for its current OS, as is the newly released Vision Pro.
There's virtually no point equipping these devices with any better hardware than they run today because of software limitations. You could have easily left the iPads at M1 and noone could tell.

Maybe something good could come out of merging iPadOS/iOS/macOS in the future under one roof - a system that would be as powerful as each device needs it to be, but remain as adaptable to the given device as it is now, to keep things user friendly.

These software platforms already share enough similarities as they are.

100% this. They could still be branded differently but there are only advantages to having a single OS which adjusts to different screen sizes and user inputs.

Apple needs a more advanced OS for its touch devices, a keyboard/mouse is now a common accessory for the iPad, Macs are rumoured to be getting touch screens. There's a clear direction here which a single OS would solve.
