This thread is all very interesting but I just want a new Mac Pro to be announced. My early 2008 model was destroyed when we had a lightning strike a couple of weeks ago and the insurance has just paid put so I've got a lot of cash burning a hole in my pocket for a new Mac. I'm not buying a 2010 model when there's a chance of a 2011 model soon. The sooner the better, please.

I think MacPro is going to be marginalized by Apple, maybe would be extinct in a few years.

Right now, Apple would like most of their consumers to use:

1. iMac as desktop needs + MacBook Air for portability
2. Macbook Pro as your only Mac + Apple Cinema Display to have virtual desktop at home/office.

That's where their marketing plan going. Not to say MacPro is bad, it's excellent indeed, but surely not for majority of Apple's typical consumers

Again, neither is fast enough for real Pro needs. I have a fast Macbook Pro for when I'm away from my desktop, and it can't keep up with my Mac Pro for the work I do.

People suggesting the iMac or Macbook Pro as a Mac Pro replacement really don't understand pro work, I think. See the "Mac Pro Overpowered" thread.

If there is a new update it will be a spec bump

There are people who can't get enough power, I've met people (plural) who have had Mac Pros maxed for days, one fellow I met in Physics had it going for weeks...

Yup, I know but it's worth waiting to see what happens. I'd rather wait a few weeks and get a better spec than buy a machine that's a year out of date.

I think what happens is that people look at the Geekbench results and see the iMac and MacbookPro with higher scores than the entry-level MacPros.

Of course, in the real world a MacPro still has better over-all performance, but I can understand how Geekbench would lead some folks to erroneous conclusions.

Truth is, for what I do a single-CPU 2009 Nehalem MacPro is still going to kick the 2011 iMac's and MacbookPro's ass, provided you add RAM and multiple HDD's.

Well, Q2 figures are in and Mac sales are now just 18% of Apple's total. The iPad is at 21% and the iPhone is good for 47%.

I'm gonna restrain my expectations regarding the MacPro's future, and mentally prepare myself for life with a Win7 workstation.

And Mac sales are up 14% year over year while the industry is up 2-5%.
Oh the horror..... not!

The percentage of the Apple revenues is not the most material aspect. Apple now sells more just than one product line along with a couple of "hobby" products. Well most long term stable Fortune 100 companies make diversified set of products too.

Going to buy a HP workstation ( which makes more money from non-PCs than PCs) ? Fastest growing segement of Dell ? Not workstation PCs. Toshiba ?? ... LOL.
Go find the top 5 vendors in PC world (not including Apple ) and see if they are making most of their money and/or have highest growth in the "expensive PC" segment.
