I have mac pro 2010 (5.1, single xeon proc 3.33).

I am thiinking to buy a GPU to it, to change hd5770.

It can be:

1. Titan x pascal
2. rx580/rx590
3. vega 56 or 64
or your choice -what is best?

I have bootcamp to win 7 on it and yosemity macos for right now.

Any suggestions to choose the GPU.

thx in advance.

DO not want to do any modding to PSU etc.

First thing, no GPU of your list will work with Yosemite.

• RX-580/590 work with Sierra poorly.
• Vega needs at least High Sierra and work a lot better with 10.14.4.
• Pascal Titan will need High Sierra.

Without PSU mod you are limited to RX 580/590 and some low power Vega 56 models. Anything else will require more power than a standard Mac Pro can supply via PCIe AUX A and B.

BTW, there are dozens of similar posts, just open the first and second pages of Mac Pro forum and do some reading.

Yes, it's at least 250W TDP GPU. Mac Pro without mods can supply 225W (75W slot + 75W PCIe AUX A + 75W PCIe AUX B).

Some people use eVGA PowerLink to make it work, but it's over the nominal capacity and will have occasional shutdowns.

Another thing, you have to install High Sierra and upgrade your Mac Pro BootROM to MP51.0089.B00 BEFORE installing a newer GPU. Read here:

Coming from an older but fast Nvidia 980Ti on High Sierra, transitioning to Mojave and a neat Alu Limited Edition Vega 64 with Pixlas mod, - I never did look back. Believe me, it's really worth it.

The only relevant question at the moment is this: Can you get a Vega64 LE for a reasonable price now or can you wait just 4 weeks more for OSX 10.14.5 and the connected driver support for the shiny new Vega 7. Unless you want to be stuck on HS, this is the way to go in my opinion. The MP5.1 on Mojave is a real pleasure, I couldn't be happier with that setup at the moment. Don't forget, the Vega 64 is otherwise found only on the black iMac Pro. This thing scream's, man...

I know it will show as "radeon polaris 8192" in about this mac. And in all other things it is the same as rx580 (10 % faster may be)? Am i correct?

No, Nitro+ is a overclockers card and will have power and space problems with a Mac Pro - it's a 2,2 slots card and you will lose slot-2.

Stick to the Apple supported list: Sapphire Pulse RX 580 or RX 590 with 2.0 slots form factor.

Yes, that is a positive. Vega 7 will have the same power requirements like the Vega64, actually a tiny bit more. (295 -> 315) Both need the Pixlas cable.

I was reluctant in the beginning, but I wanted to see Mojave in Black Mode on my screen, so I did order the cable.
Neat to know, it can be ordered already preconfigured. This means its already in the correct length, just the crimp process has to be done. - Do a couple test crimps, you will see its really easy once you tested it out and get it how to do it. Its like some AMP contacts in the audio car universe.

Nice thread. Im just about to update my GPU. I currently have a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 2 GB and looking now into either a:

- Radeon Saphire Pule RX580 (8GB)
- Vega 64

I do mostly Video and Photo editing but also play some games (XPlane, CSGO).

The AMD cards work ‘out of the box’ with the relevant os version.
Nvidia cards need drivers.

Because I don't want to have issues again. I thought Im fine with my GTX 680 but still no web drivers provided from NVIDIA or possibly APPLE doesn't want to release them. So I say goodbye to Nvidia for now.
