Very Very insightful thread. I was able to take my Mac Pro 4,1->5,1 and update to Mojave with the 140.0.0.0.0 BootRom. NVME boot is successful. Very Cool. I have to give tsialex 2 thumbs up. I've used Binwalk to get information about my ROM. The only concern I have is if in the future I decide to ever install Win10, What steps would I need to take to make sure my Bootrom doesn't get corrupted?

Thank you, I've managed to follow the instructions. Removed all Drives but the Windows one. Installed Windows 10 via DVD, it Boots, and works properly a few drivers issues, but that can be easily fixed. I booted back to macOS Mojave, Did another BootRom Dump and ran Binwalk. Looking Good.

Thanks again for everyone who have contributed to this thread. Awesome People here =)

Use the steps in this tutorial. Works perfectly.

I have a flashed 4,1 > 5,1 running El Capitan. I upgraded the firmware to 084 yesterday using the High Sierra Installer which worked fine. I then tried booting a Mojave 10.14.1 USB Stick to update to 140 with the original GT 120 and a reference GTX 980 installed but the installer complains that there is no Metal GPU.
How do I update my firmware to 140 now?

You can’t update 4,1>5,1 via USB installer, you have to do via macOS.

Read the first post of this thread and MP5,1: What you have to do to upgrade to Mojave.

OK thanks. So I will have to install High Sierra to a hard drive and run the Mojave Installer App from there to update my EFI?
I'm also planning to buy an RX 580 to replace the GTX 980 and run Mojave. How do I install Mojave with it? I often read that it's not detected as Metal card by the installer.

Read the first post MP5,1: What you have to do to upgrade to Mojave, it's all there explaining how to get MP51.0089.B00, after that you need a supported GPU, neither one that you have is, GT120 is obsolete after 10.13.6 and GTX 980 don't have web drivers to run Mojave.

You will need a supported GPU.

It's detected 99,9% of the time, just two people had problems that I know of.

Having the same problem here, help? Thank you!!

If you already have MP51.0089.B00 or 138.0.0.0.0, boot High Sierra and download the full Mac App Store installer for 10.14.1. Open the installer from there and upgrade your BootROM.

If your Mac Pro BootROM is older than MP51.0089.B00 and you don't have a High Sierra disk, you will have to do more steps, but this instructions will get you running even if you still have MP51.007F.B00:

  1. Download de full Mac App Store installer for 10.12.6, you can get it here https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208202 item (4)
  2. Make a bootable 10.12.6 USB key installer with createinstallmedia
  3. Remove ALL drives from your Mac Pro, all PCIe cards. You need a Mac EFI GPU. Make it simple.
  4. Install an empty drive into your Mac Pro
  5. Boot from your 10.12.6 createinstallmedia installer
  6. Install 10.12.6 into your empty drive
  7. After installed, download 10.13.6 full Mac App Store installer from here https://support.apple.com/macos/high-sierra
  8. After the download is completed, open the High Sierra installer and do as it says to upgrade your BootROM.
  9. Check if your BootROM is MP51.0089.B00, if so, create a USB-key installer for 10.13.6.
  10. Do a clean install of 10.13.6 via the createinstallmedia, if you upgraded your BootROM correctly to MP51.0089.B00, it will work now.
  11. After installed, go to the Mac App Store and download 10.14.1 full installer, open it and and do as it says to upgrade your BootROM.

Since I currently don't have a supported GPU I installed 10.13.1 (since I only had that installer) to an HDD using a bootable USB with the GT 120 installed. I then updated that installation to 10.13.6 which took care of the EFI update to 089 as well. After that I swapped the GT 120 with my GTX 980 and launched the Mojave installer which then successfully flashed the 140 EFI!
Thanks again for your help!

Yep, you can use your GTX 980 to flash 140.0.0.0.0 from 10.13.6, but not to run Mojave.

It says I need a metal card or FV off. I have an RX560 sapphire pulse which shows metal support in profiler. FV is off.

What's your current BootROM?

Did you tried from a clean install of 10.13.6?

Did you opened a bug report with Apple?

138.
Just did automatic update first, unfortunately. Then downloaded full installer but stuck on metal/FV screen.
Have not submitted bug report

@tsialex

with a blowtorch it's almost impossible to control the heat. I googled at which temperature solder starts to melt. using an infrared temperature gun I measured the temp of my stove top (hotplate) and placed the CPU upside down onto it. before delidding I also inserted razorblades between the IHS and CPU carrier.

I used a butane lighter. After cutting the gasket, I used also used four straight razors to wedge between the IHS and CPU, then I suspended the whole contraption between two books. After like 5 seconds the CPU just falls to the table. I then cut the rest of the solder before polishing the CPU to a mirror finish.

EDIT: I found the pic I took of the stuff I bought to do the job. I guess it's not a "lighter" but more of a torch, but it's handheld and very easy to ensure that the heat was concentrated on the die.

Yeah I just picked up one for my trashcan from Microcenter price matched... it was great. I was debating 1TB vs 2TB, when I saw the price on Amazon, I decided 1TB is the way to go!
