Hi all. I am waiting some components I bought to upgrade my MP 4,1 flashed to 5,1, and I wanted to use a samsung evo 970 nvme 250 GB to speed up mojave. Right now I have high sierra installed, but I am planning to upgrade de gpu to have metal compatibilty and install mojave.

Is it true that once I have mojave, firmware 140.0.0.0.0 supports nvme using an adapter pcie and boot natively?.
Yes, firmware 140.0.0.0.0 has native NVMe boot support.

Both cards use only 4 lanes, even if one of them has the 16 lanes size. NVMe blades on the market today are 4 lanes, some older ones are 2 lanes.

Read the thread Blade SSDs - NVMe & AHCI.

thanks a lot for your quick answers. I´ll read it through to see what´s the best option. However, based on what you are telling, it is pointless to buy an pci adapter x16. A pcie x4 is going to give us the maximum rate unless of course I spend a fortune in the adapter to convert to pcie 3.0

Yes, Mojave works nicely with MP5,1. Buy one of the recommended GPUs by Apple, don’t experiment with the might work list.

Ok here is another question.. I have the ATI Radeon 5770 which is a non-metal card.. just to experiment, can I use Dosdude's tool and try out Mojave since the app he created will allow non-metal based macs to use it ?

Exactly the same.

Hi, I have a 5,1 Mac Pro - originally it was a 2009. I already have 10.13.6 however, when I tried to download the full installer, the firmware for .0089 does not start up, I get nothing. What could be a cause for this ?

If you read the first post of dosdude1 Mojave thread, you will see that ATI 5770 is not supported even with his tool.

Clarification:

Supported as have acceleration - once installed with a hacked install or with a METAL GPU, you can boot Mojave with a ATI HD5770/5780.

It's a EFI GPU and Mojave will show the screen using the default EFI drivers, but it's un-accelerated and it's practically useless as the UI is slow as molasses.

Yup, I've had to use my 5870 a couple of times with Mojo (already installed from a Metal card).

It will load and show you screens as expected. It's so slow and unresponsive after about 10 minutes it's ridicules. It's only practical use is as a diagnostic tool.

No sir, I installed High Sierra without any hacks when it was 10.13, however when I saw in the app store the combo update, this brought me to 10.13.6. So no hacked installs here. Any other ideas why the boot rom isn't working ? I just want to update the firmware at this point. Not interested in Mojave, yet.

I was having problems these past days also. Clean install, and holding the power button, for the FW update, even after the long tone AND chime and then release solved it for me. I have done probably 10x attempts to update the FW and tonight i succeeded.

If your MacPro was a 4,1 and now id’s as a 5,1 it was “hacked” in some way to do that. There are some complications related to those “hacks” that are starting to present themselves with firmware updates.

i only did this to keep up with things.. and the boards were damn cheap back in 2010.. So, because I switched the boards thats why this is happening ? Then forget it.. I don't have 4,1 boards anymore and I am not going to go back to those just for a firmware update. Mojave if anything will be on my laptop a 2012 MacBook pro. Apple has gone too far this time.

Authentic 4,1 machines that ID as 4,1 cannot update beyond 10.11. That has been the case for awhile, so not sure where the sudden angst comes from.

You can “hack” those 4,1 machines to ID as 5,1 but you need to realize that is a hack - not EVERYTHING works as planned. These latest firmware updates appear to have install issues on many 4,1>5,1 machines and it’s a commonly reported problem. If you’ve installed windows or use windows partition, that also can add to the headache.

Download FULL INSTALLER and try again. Try again. Hold power button until the beep/chime stops, then wait 5 more seconds.

I get what you are saying, however my situation is different - I bought the actual 5,1 boards and though the serial is saying 2009 Mac Pro, my boards are authentic 5,1 boards. Here is a pic of my board information:

Combo updater will not update firmware. You must have the HS Full Installer. It's 5-ish GBs. The Full Installer will take you to 89, which is the gateway to later firmware versions.

I do have the 5.23 GB file, however I tried like 20 times and it still won't load the firmware. While my Mac Pro WAS a 4,1, it is no longer since 2010 - I bought the backplane board and processor board which are true, boards. I did not use Netkas's 4.1-5.1 hack to just flash the firmware and make 4,1 boards update to 5,1. I am not sure what the issue is, but I tried like 20 times to do this and nothing.

At this point i am not interested in Mojave since I don't have the funds to buy a metal card, I just want to update the firmware for the time being to 0089

Same applies, since your MP5,1 boards were hacked to have the same 2009 serial of the case, no?
Swapped 4,1 boards with 5,1 boards, same 4,1 serial - will Mojave work?

So, what you are saying is I won;'t be able to upgrade the firmware ? Can't I do a force update using the 4,1 to 5,1 netkas firmware updater ? As I said, because metal cards are not in my price range, I just want to update to the latest firmware just in case I decide to go Mojave which there is a 80 percent change I won't.

Is there a way to change the serial ? I can do this if I have the right tool to do it.

I don't know how your BootROM was hacked - your case is unique, no one ever did what you did.

Did you tried to install an empty disk into your Mac Pro and install El Capitan from the Mac App Store, like the "If anything else works" part of the first post? Try that.

BTW, don't use dosdude download tools to download installers for a supported Mac Pro, you can't upgrade firmware with them.

No, however I can try to use an external usb drive to erase fully SIERRA and try that. Maybe that might work.

Another thing is when i called Apple about this they told me that I did not need to do any update of firmware - just get a metal card and run the installer.. thats all as their website and links mention nothing about this firmware update. Is Apple right ?

For any other supported Mac, where firmware updates are automatic and happen with normal software updates, yes.

For a Mac Pro 5,1, where you have manual firmware updates, no.

Well, in either case.. I tried to do the firmware to no avail.. Its not working.. I guess its my fault because all I "EFFING" did was change out the boards.. I did not allow the apple tech to assign the 2009 serial to the boards, he did this himself.. so I am SOL then right ? I even tried installing on another drive and it will won't do it. I stand by Apple's word after I spoke with a tech last night who did the exact same thing and he told me all he did was he installed the metal card in and it worked fine.

ANY SUGGESTIONS on how to force the firmware ?? Or shall I destroy this machine ?

Ok, when I get a chance to do this, I will send this to you.. Then once this is done can you confirm that it will work ? Another thing I noticed is that is it possible to use the romdump util to just force it that way or will that not work either if I use pacifist to get the firmware from the downloaded High Sierra ?

If you do that, you'll never log in into iCloud/iMessage/FaceTime again. DON'T EVER DO THIS.
