I have a MacPro 5,1 that is working great, just doesn't support metal so I'm back level on OS.

Will this bring me up to date?

I have MacPro Early 2009 that has already been flashed to 5,1 and Boot Rom MP51.0084.B00
As you recommended, I have attempted to use the High Sierra installer to do the firmware update to MP51.0089.B00 before installing Mojave. Once the firmware is updated, i can install my Metal supported Sapphire Radeon NITRO+ RX 580 8GB.
I hold down the power button until it beeps and it appears to start the firmware update, but it seems to hang right away. It barely makes any progress in the status bar and just hangs.

What could be the issue here?
Should i attempt a fresh install of High Sierra on another drive?
Or do i need to boot into recovery mode and run csrutil disable prior to flashing this?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Please read the first post, you need an Apple OEM or a flashed GPU that is compatible with macOS installer to upgrade to MP51.0089.B00. Even if your GTX 980 is MVC flashed and have pre-boot configuration support, it's not a macOS installer compatible GPU - it's a GPU that need web drivers to work.

Hi all
New to here.

Got my mac pro 2 years ago. And did not know much about all the details of upgrading to mojave.

It has a 980ti gpu.

Last year when mojave arrived without much research, unfortunately, i updated to mojave.
It updated but it does not recognize the gpu, as would be expected.

I am ready and willing to switch to a recommended gpu..but not sure whether just changing the gpu will be enough to ensure that mojave will recognize the gpu.

What would be the best steps?
Many thans in advance..

First step is to read the first post of the thread and upgrade your Mac Pro BootROM to MP51.0089.B00 then to 144.0.0.0.0. All info needed is there.

Dude I have read it 5 times and its going over my head lol.

Do I need to do this upgrade to turn my 4.1 to a 5.1 first?
Yes, second paragraph:
If you are trying to install Mojave on a Mac Pro 5,1 (2009 updated to 5,1 firmware, 2010 and 2012), you have first to upgrade your BootROM to version MP51.0089.B00 and to High Sierra 10.13.6, then you can install a Metal capable GPU and install Mojave.

The first post has the Apple recommendations, but read the GPU Compatibility List for cMP before anything since every GPU has a little pitfall here and there and not one is perfect.

Thanks for all you help, I have now updated my Mac Pro to a 5.1, updated by BootRom to MP51.0089.B00 and I currently installing High Serrira.

I ordered the MSI card I linked as reviews on Amazon confirmed it had work on macOS Mojave, Im not sure how I will run my Apple 30inch Cinema Disply

New GPU all fitted, BootROM now at 144.0.0.0.0, now installing Mojave.

If some could help with a how to guide for the CPU upgrade that would be great

I suggest looking on Google: Mac Pro Technician's Guide.

This official Apple document is a step-by-step guide on how to do many things on your cMP, including swapping out CPUs.

I purchased and installed an Apple ATI Radeon HD 5770, but it's still getting stuck at this point while it's attempting to flash the Boot ROM.

Follow the If nothing above works for you, try this: instructions on the bottom of the first post, use a fully cleaned disk to install 10.11/10.12, don't forget to clear your NVRAM 3 times sequentially.
