Ah, so it doesn't have magnets like the case? Bummer, but not a big deal.

I think the idea is that you can easily take off the wallet to charge. All those people with wallets stuck to the back of their phone or case can't charge wirelessly unless the remove the case which is a PITA. Magsafe wallet solves that problem.

Having used MagSafe in the past, I find that it's a more elegant way of charging. There's always something satisfying about magnets. It also paves way for a portless iPhone 13. The great thing is that you get both options with the 12, so you won't be left out in the upcoming years.

Being shipped via FedEx!!!

Yes. Having an Apple Watch, I already know I will like it on my iPhone 12 as well. You can just toss it on the charger without worrying about the careful positioning.

I'll be curious to know how heavy the magsafe charger is. Like, will it be a decent portable option, used with a battery pack?

I’m excited about Verizon’s 5g. They can keep their magnet. I ordered the clear case for the 12 pro and I see there is a big bullseye on the back of it.
So stupid IMO.
If you have no plans on using MagSafe, you should just cancel that order and get a cheaper case on Amazon. Plenty of companies make cheap, transparent cases at a fraction of the cost. $50 for a piece of silicone is kind of absurd. I ordered a $10 Spigen case from Amazon and I’m happy with it. And it has no weird bullseye magnets on it. 😉

So do the Apple cases rely on the magnet to stay on? As in, no squeezing the iPhone into the case, as the magnet is the thing keeping it attached?

No. The white metal ring is to enforce the magnetic force between the phone and the charger. Generic silicone cases will still work with wireless charging but it may not stick as well.

"With built-in magnets that align perfectly with iPhone 12 | 12 Pro, the case offers a magical attach and detach experience, every time."

So not sure if what you said is accurate.

magical attach and detach experience with the charger.
Not between the phone and the case.. lol.

Anyone know how long the cord is? I wouldn’t mind buying one and case. But I need the longer cord. And Apple’s site doesn’t say anything about the length. That I could find.
It says it right in the product info page. It’s an “integrated” cable and it measures 1 meter.

I would consider getting it if the damned cable wasn’t attached. First of all, their OEM cables suck. And second, a 3-foot long cable isn’t gonna do jack for me. I love my 6-foot long Anker braided Lightning cable and can’t see giving that up anytime soon.

If they ever allow users to swap the cable, I’ll bite. (oddly, though, the MagSafe Duo does appear to have a detachable USB-C cable)

If the MagSafe charger would allow me to swap the cable, I’d definitely consider it, though.

As you wish..

That's just an animation.
The case will come off every so often if the silicone case did not grab the phone.
Apple would not allow that in their QA process.
I will let you know Next Friday when I receive the phone, case, and MagSafe charger.

From the Verge article:

"Immediately, you can see how much easier it’d be to swap cases each morning, or perhaps before you go out for the evening (once society starts doing that kind of thing again). Today’s cases effectively have claws that grasp the edges of your phone — but with magnets, there’d be less need to painstakingly pry those away from your phone’s corners, or press down hard on your pricey camera module just to get enough leverage to pop it off."

This is more Apple genius. They will sell sooo many more cases by making case swapping easier. Not just them but also third party magsafe cases.

I am a believer now. I am sorry I misled you.

Well, damn lol. I knew these existed but I didn’t even think about it. In my mind, I saw myself using a regular extension cord, with a bulky USB-C adapter attached to it in the middle. This would be a better alternative, for sure.

I still think it would’ve been better and more “eco friendly” to let us use our own cables. Just sell me the puck.

No worries! My mind is blown thinking about all the cases and wallets that people will buy to change color combinations every day. If this really is how it works, it's pretty marketing clever.

I will not change the cases ever.
But the white ring will hide possible scratching the repeated physical contact will cause.

MagSafe is clearly the future of iPhone charging. I’m sure they can make it more efficient for next year and completely replace the Lightning port with it within a couple of years.
Plus MagSafe will make it possible to use the phone while it’s charging and that’s not possible with Qi.

It's interesting how Apple is branding all of these things Magsafe. It's not like magsafe just refers to the charger. It's their generic branding now of all things related, including the charger, the wallet, cases, etc.
