Eric,

Find out where you read that and you'll be a hero to all!

Another big problem I see is that there is no way to choose a port for SMTP. Unless you mail server is set to use the default port, you're out of luck.

Exchange support is not real Exchange support either. It requires the Exchange server is configured to accept IMAP connections. This is often disabled on corporate systems for security reasons.

You can choose a port, simply enter port after URL e.g. mail.abc.com:26

Actually, I prefer the iPhone keyboard over Blackberry.

But don't you also like the horizontal version that's accessible in the iPhone browser better than the vertical version? While I get along with the vertical version well, I type double as fast in the browser version!

Maybe I'm an idiot but I have found another email flaw is pretty annoying. If I reply to an existing email message there is no option to attach a file. If I start a new message I can attach a file. Can anyone confirm this as a shortcoming or user error?

I'd be curious to hear people's guesses: can software updates fix the following "problems":

a) that the keyboard is not available in the convenient horizontal mode in email and text messaging modes, but only in web browser mode (where one usually needs to type least).

b) that emails are only downloaded every 15 minutes (at least). If with an update the download were possible every 2 minutes, would this really take away a lot of the standby time? Alternatively, can there be a "push email" solution similarly to Blackberry's, where the email doesn't need to be checked by the device, but is forwarded by the server? I would like to receive my email in real time!

All the above can be fixed via software update, and there will be many new features added to the phone over the next 18=24 months. Apple have already said that for the Apple TV and iPhone they are not realising the profits from sales immediatley but will take them over a 18-24 month period due the continual updates they will be providing to already shipped devices (it an account rule they must follow)

I believe you can get Push Email right now, if you set up a Yahoo email account.

Coming from BB I miss the old email system. On iPhone what we need is not a MASS DELETE, because a mass delete will delete one good email of 100 bad ones. What I want is a quick select and then delete. There is no such feature on BB, true, but on BB you can delete a msg very very quickly by clicking ont he Del key then Enter key (no more than 0.5 second) without lag time. On iPhone it takes a while to delete a message.

Also, using gmail, every mail I download shows up as new even though I have read them already. I know gmail is just pop3 server, but can't they integrate so that they know what emails have been deleted? Also, true gmail experiece is conversation thread style mail, but on iPhone mails are displayed traditionally.

And more importantly...I can't do a search of all my mail (2 years worth of them) on gmail server! Since Gmail doesn't use sorting and such, it heavily relies on its superior search technology. What a shame that I can't access to all my mail sent or received on my iPhone by simply do a search?

Lastly, what's the deal with receiving a copy of every single message that I sent out?!?!?! Can it please not do that? Can it simply go to a sent box automatically? No, right now, every mail I send it HAS to come back to my inbox and I have to move to sent box myself.

Ladeer,

A mass delete is essential. You use it AFTER you read/reply to
your mail. A QUICK DELETE is also a great idea as well!

On the BB it was more of a highlight a group of mail you wanted
removed. You could easily remove some or all of it. This is
exactly what is needed for the iPhone. Right now, the email
function is worthless for me. I am confident that Apple will
address this issue in the upcoming weeks.

Can anybody confirm this? I don't see how it would work since the iPhone does check emails only manually or every 15/30 minutes.

I agree that at present the email is, although visually appealing, not really usable. The real problem is that nobody can say *for sure* that these things will be improved with a patch. Given how essential the email functionality is for me, and the risk that I will have to do my work over the next 2 years with a device that doesn't do email well, I might have no choice but to return it within the first two weeks after I bought it, if no patch solves the problem. Seems unlikely that they'll be so fast so, and while not being happy about it, I see myself forced to bring the iPhone back Friday in twelve days. But I won't give up hope that they'll at least address a few of the email issues mentioned in thie thread and other's, which could be promising enough for me (and other's) to keep the device and wait until the email functionality is (hopefully) complete.

Re: Gmail, if you go into Gmail and tell it only to send POP3 mail that is new from that moment forwards it wont download a month's worth of stuff. Also, with Gmail, and I assume with Yahoo and everyone else, if you set the system to be strict on spam it won't get through to your POP mail anyhow.

Where exactly donyou go to do that?

I agree with all of your complaints. My biggest issue is that mail doesn't sync as advertised it just works like my blackberry used to. I have to take actions onall my emails twice once on the phone and once onthe computer. I want to recieve my email on both but once I read it on the phone and attach and sync I want the computer to recognize the action i ve taken on the email and have it automatically reflect this on the emails on the computer and visa verse. It does it with dot mac so i k ow its possible. That is wat syncing is! I don't know what you call this system

Go to the web interface of gmail and look under forwarding and pop.

Email Sending

My RR will not allow out messages.
Dumb luck, i tried using "CWMX.COM" on the out server. IT WORKS !

I had a similar problem with spam on two of my e-mail accounts. It's also been a problem for me on my old phone, a Motorola Q.

My solution has been to use Mail on my Mac to filter messages from senders who are in my address book and to forward those messages to a free Yahoo! IMAP account which I have enabled on my iPhone. This makes certain that important e-mails from people that I know on my spammed accounts get through to my phone.

I agree... right now, mail on the iPhone doesnt offer any advantages over web-based email rather than the notification of a new message. I want it to sync with Mail.app and tell the program what messages I've read and sent on my iPhone!

Y! Mail IS Push

Can anybody confirm this? I don't see how it would work since the iPhone does check emails only manually or every 15/30 minutes.
Yes, Y! Mail is Push as you can easily read in the iPhone User Guide, Y! Press Releases, or just configure your Y! Mail and send yourself a message! The interface for Y! Mail is the same as other email accounts, however it is using a Push implementation and does not follow the 15 minute setting under Settings > Mail.

Time to port over to gmail
(no spam on my iphone)

Now if apple would only integrate google calendar into the iphone so I don't have to access the web with safari everytime I look at my calendar.

Not the easiest way to do it.

But i use spanning sync to sync google calendar with my iCal. It is a $65 (lifetime) piece of software ($25/year). It actually works fairly well. It annoys me they now charge THAT much for it but whatever. So that will sync my Ical and google calendar. And thus when i sync up my iPhone it will then sync with iCal which in turn syncs with google calendar. It all works actually fairly smooth. I tried it both ways the other day.

Personally i can live with the 25 downloads for right now when it does it.

Its annoying but ok.

However .... they need to have a mass read option. Cause going through each is a pain

I did something similar but backwards and used Gmail instead of Yahoo.

I essentially filter all my mail through gmail and back to my own servers. Works well.

This is how I did it:

http://www.anyiphone.com/2007/07/02/setting-up-mail-on-the-iphone/

If anyone has any suggestions on how I could have it feedback to the same mail folder I am all eyes. This is on a shared server and I don't have server level access to mail. I can do filtering in Cpanel, but the problem is I need a exclude filter not an include filter.

Marksman,

I appreciate the effort you put into your blog.

Can you add specific step-by-step instructions to setting
up a Gmail account on the webside and then setting up on the
iPhone so it receives the mail? The instructions should include
any spam filtering.

Thanks

on Saturday an apple employee told me apple was working on the mass email fix. She seemed knowledgeable so I believe it will be done.

One odd issue I am having as well. When I login on my MBP Mail, I am asked for a password to my pop3 account. I enter it in, and it says it is wrong, when it is not.

So for some reason, all the mail is going to my iPhone, not my computer!

I'm experiencing this same thing too. If you find the remedy, please post it!
